Another angle is that they have the inline product to move too - GR, Elite, EXT, Ambassador, Soldier, etc... These are already doing quite poorly at retail so they want these high priced retros to essentially inject some lifeblood in the brand as a whole.
Nike has to be quite careful here, as they run the risk of having their older, more complex LBJ shoes cannibalize (already weak) sales of their lower tech, higher margin inline product.
I can see most if not all of the AZG retros as being quite hard for most to obtain due to limited availability and hype.

The best part of this retro line is that JB had already established what a lucrative business retros can be, so I'm sure Nike has all of the original molds/tooling readily available.

Nike also knows how lucrative retros are when they cut corners, so I expect the consumers aka true fans of the shoe to be disappointed. I hope they prove me wrong...
