BELCHERTOWN (CBS)Shortly after midnight Tuesday, seven people were caught trespassing at the Quabbin Reservoir.

State Police say the five men and two women are from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, and “cited their education and career interests” for being in the area. The men told police they were chemical engineers and recent college graduates.

The Quabbin, in Belchertown, is one of the country’s largest man-made public water supplies. Boston’s drinking water comes from the Quabbin and the Wachusett Reservoirs.

State Police say there were no warrants or advisories on any of the individuals and “there was no evidence that the seven were committing any crime beyond the trespassing.”

All seven were allowed to leave and will be summonsed to court for trespassing. The FBI is investigating and routine checks of public water supplies have been increased following the incident.

The seven individuals currently live in Amherst, Cambridge, Sunderland, Northampton and New York City. Police have not released their names because a court date has not been set.

That's scary **** right there.

^ Who knows wtf they were doing at a restricted Reservoir (Boston's main drinking water supply) after midnight?

Only reason anyone is assuming the worst is because of their Racial background

If they had no ill intent they should have at least had the presence of mind to know not to be in an unauthorized area, at an odd time. Especially being middle eastern (and Singaporean) and how they are profiled. Especially with how hot the terrorism topic is right now in the U.S. ESPECIALLY in Boston. Too many aggravating factors. Either they are morons or had something planned.

"Especially being middle eastern"

You sound very racist OP.

How? I'm saying if I was middle eastern in Boston right now, I'd be walking on egg shells. I wouldn't be bringing this type of attention on myself. Seems like common damn sense. Do you not know how to read between the lines?

You're the one who said "the racism is strong in Boston." I'm sure these dudes would me more aware of the profiling that goes on with their race than anyone, especially post- 9/11.

Regardless of their background, that is pretty damn sketchy.  Who gathers up the posse and treks to the water reservoir at midnight?

I mean, it'd be one thing if they were high school kids.  But college graduates and chemical engineers?  And seven of them?  And they cite their reason for being there as educational and career-oriented?  So you couldn't have tried to do things, you know, the adult/college graduate way and contacted officials at the reservoir to gain legal access to the facility?

Yeah, that's not sketchy at all.  It could be totally innocent and that's fine.  But that doesn't mean it isn't questionable activity.

So because they were Middle Eastern that means they were planning something? SMh

How easy is it to contaminate the water supply? If it's simple enough to where all it takes if a few people to spend x amount of time after dark...then I think that's a real problem.

Thank you. I'm glad someone in here is using their critical reasoning skills.

No. That's not what you're "saying" though.

Your proceeded to correlate middle eastern men being suspicious with terrorism, and 9/11.

If that isn't racial profiling, than I don't know what is.

not really thinkin much of that...ive been to the quabbin on field trips as a youngin...its in the woods so i bet these guys were just out for a stroll or somethin
allotta ppl go to see it cuz of the entire grounds, nice views etc

Yup.  You shouldn't have to walk on eggshells if you're middle eastern in the US no matter what happened previously.  Did you see white people walking on eggshells when Timothy McVeigh got caught?

no what you are saying is that you are inherently suspicious of all middle easterners/arabs regardless if its based of the actions of a few. like a white woman getting scared when they see a black man on the street because they fear the worst is gonna happen to them because of what they read or hear.

anyone can commit any crime. anyone can be a terrorist. this is the third time i've witnessed racism in light of recent events.

the plane being turned around back to boston because 2 dudes were rude and speaking arabic loudly and not sitting near each other.

a muslim woman in Malden, MA gets jumped in broad daylight, while she is pushing her baby in the carriage, getting blamed for the bombings

and now you starting a thread on this ********.

the boston bombers weren't even middle eastern, and yet....

No. I didn't. I said that's how they are viewed in the American eye. They are profiled. Therefore, I believe they should be more mindful of their actions and how they will be perceived. For their benefit at least. I understand that's not how it should be, but we live in a prejudiced time. You're reaching for an argument.

How you took that out of what I said, I do not know

I'm actually advocating for them being mindful of themselves because of the simple mindedness of our society. I know they shouldn't have to, but apparently in your world we live in a just country where if you're innocent, you're never found guilty.

I think you just reinforced your racism with that statement.  That's not how they are viewed through my American eyes.  They shouldn't have to be mindful of any of their actions.  They should live life as they want and should, without any fear of judgement.

you aren't saying anything new. this country is racist, sexist, ignorant...the whole 9.

and yes you are right, as a minority, there are certain things you need to be aware of, unlike white people. having said that, that shouldn't mean you should cower in a hole and remain as lowkey as possible. the article tells me they never committed a crime. there was no reason to suspect foul play.

case closed.

im black. i realize there are racist/trigger happy cops out there. and history has shown that being black, unarmed, innocent and minding your own business, is enough probable cause to catch a permanent L. word to Sean Bell.

but should i not drive at night? am i being mindful by not driving at night? but wouldn't that be living in fear? you see where im going with this.

had this article been about 3 people of a white anglo saxon...idk or christian background...hell would the article even have been made? and if it had would you have made a thread about it?

Don't get too excited though.  I said it was questionable.  You said it was "scary".  Why is that scary to you?  Because your mind automatically assumes the worst.  And why?  Because of their ethnic/racial background.

My mind doesn't think like that.  All I know is that it seems weird that a group of recent college graduates would be trespassing after midnight, under the guise of educational/career reasons.  Seems they'd have more common sense than that, being chemical engineers and all.  There's nothing "scary" about that.  Just odd.
