Official Photography Thread: Vol. ICan'tFindTheLastOne

thats the focal lenght... the diameter. one min i'll figure it out it for you.

its 58mm...
B&H

its like $13... so probably like $20 shipped to save you alot in the long run if you ever were to stratch the lense... def worth it.

^^thanks, man.

how'd you figure that out?

just so i know in the long run

^ looked up the 18-55mm lens for a canon rebel and read the specs.. I'm sure its in your manual, most of the stuff they tell you right on site like B&H cause if they don't sell you the camera or lense they want to sell you all the other @#%$ you need for it...

Tell me what you think. I am using a sony cybershot; should I upgrade?

I don't like either of these two but whatevers. I notice more and more that I really really like contrast and textures. But I need to get out of my house and stop being lazy.

^^ I would, that time&date thing alone would make me insane...

So the filter protects and improves quality?

for uv filter expect it mostly to protect the lense. they might claim it improves the contrast, and it probably will but $13 only gets you so much improvement...

In my opinion it's a boring picture.

I'm assuming you were trying to focus on the the bottom left plant but it's blurry

Something you might want to avoid.

You should look at Kenneth Josephson (former professor at SAIC among being reasonably highly regarded in the world of art photography). He has an entire series of work where his shadow is in the picture... among other series of his where he break constructs like the photographers shadow...

I need to upgrade to a new camera from this @#%$ sony cybershot. There are a lot of pros here, can you guys recommend me something?

Oh, and, the sensor cleaning function in the XTi, is it good?
Do i need to manually clean it every once in a while?

I wouldn't know... but easy way to tell if its dirty on the inside would be clean the lense (like glasses cleaner and glasses cloth) and shoot in raw the biggest pixel rate you can get. then open the file in photoshop or whatever at 100% and see if there is dust on the image it will look like little white hairs.. if there are then take the lense off clean the sensor and see if its gets better...

oh yeah, and when cleaning the sensor, I would just use canned air. I wouldnt actually touch it... just to be safe, maybe the manual says you can but easy simple way to clean it that wont damage it is canned air...

And I have a Rebel XTi, what lens would be a good upgrade to for the stock lens?

What do you plan on shooting... or are just considering another straight lense... how bad can the kit lense be? If I were you unless the kit lense is terrible i'd figure out what I like to shoot or plan on shooting and get a lense that suits that need...

NT seems to love the Canon Rebel XTi, but also Nikon D40 and D40x are great cameras. And when I shot 35mm film my professors seemed to think Nikon optics were better, but I don't think you go wrong with either...

I have a rebel XTi also and was wondering about an upgrade for the lense. I think the stock one is fine but could you recommend a macro lens? Thanks.

Hey,

Oh, okay... yeah, lately I've been shooting in RAW and have seen the advantages of it.
I like it... next time, I'll make sure to blow it up 100% to scan for dust.

And yeah, I'm not really sure on what it is that i really take pictures of.
I seem to take pictures of mostly everything.
So basically, I should wait until I found out what it is that I like to shoot, then upgrade?

The kit lense is okay, I just want to test out other stuff.

Do not use any pads or liquid on your sensor. That will ruin it over time. Then your camera is @#%$ forever. Just lock the mirror and use a handblower to blow that crap out of there. I've done it twice already with my Nikon D80. Worked both times. Just use a handblower and hold the camera downwards as you blow upwards. Use a flashlight to see if you can see any dust after you've done the above. And try your best, when changing lenses, to do it in a clean environment, if possible. Also when changing the lenses, check the back end of the lens your putting in to see if any dust is on it. Also, once you unlock the mirror use the handblower on that just for good measure.

^A can of canned air might be good investment its like $5 and probably would work better...

in short, yes... unless plan on buying an army of lense and you might eventually you should find what lenses you need/want most and get those first...
