Edit: Feed-back will be appreciated because I really want those family members to have 2 great photos of SF and I will have another opportunity to take thesame pictures tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

Not bad eh? We actually put the camera on automatic then covered the flash with our finger. That's probably why we got a redish glow to the pics.

Yeah, that came out pretty good.

The reason you got a funny hue in the original ones is that your white balance wasn't set correctly for the type of light you were using. It'ssometimes difficult when you are using mixed sources but in a studio setting (even if it's homemade) it's worth trying to set the white balance exactly- if you look in your settings there should be a custom mode.

^That's why most of the time I shoot in RAW. I do try to get the white balance as correct as possible in-camera, but the LCD on my camera can only be soaccurate. I noticed off the bat that my screen was not giving me accurate color, which is standard across the model (Canon 40D). Shooting in RAW lets mereadjust my WB, while being able to compensate about 2 stops in exposure without significant degradation of image quality. And among other things, picturestend to come out nicer because it is an uncompressed format whereas JPEG is compressed in-camera.

Thanks for the advice, I'm a real amateur at this but I'm smart and creative enough to make things happen out of nothin. I just can't wait till Ilearn the technical aspect of this art. Like that whole white balance thing makes sooo much sense, but I never what have thought to use that. But yeah anyI'm gonna post a lot more. I don't know if this has been said but I think we deserve our own Category on niketalk.com, therefore we can dothings like contest/ showcases and we can have critiques and all that?

Thats a steal. Have you seen how much they go for on Ebay? If all else fails, get one just to flip it. I believe they use Minolta lenses too.

Lol, good timing for that phrase.

dunkahollikWith an SLR you will see that point and shooting wont equal a great picture. Go through this threadand read some of the tips. I think what is working for me (for I am new to this as well) is to learn the basics and all that your cam can do and then try todupilcate shots you have seen and liked. It is the theory I have and I am trying to maintain contact with pros and people who love photography.

Good luck to you! Please post your shots as you do shoot, these guys give great ideas and advice.

I agree...I am also still new at this, I started in Nov., but I am pretty good with Photoshop and learning how to use programs that modifypictures and such. When I first started (Nov. 07) I actually wanted to learn the editing part of photography not so much towards taking pictures. But Ilearned that the more I knew about taking pictures, certain techniques, lighting, etc....its crazy photography is so broad and could take years just to mastera part of it. Don't worry a lot of us are still learning...my advice:

- Don't just sit at home...take your camera out and don't be afraid to take pictures.
- Play with the settings, even if you have to take the same pictures over and over again.
- I've had one lens (which is the 18-55mm) that came with my camera...and just bought the 50mm 2 weeks ago.
- There are always guys in this thread that are willing to give you advice...so I just lask and learn along the way.

Damn...that Goodfellas joint came out way better then I was thinking when I was scrolling down. The lighting looked so bad in those pics but with photoshop, came out pretty decent. Too bad the white balance wasn't fixed....although looking at it more, the yellow lighting seems to work somehow. Nice job......

^When you use the tripod, try it without the flash. The flash kinda defeats the purpose of the tripod because the light source freezes any motion anyway. Ifyou still insist on using the flash and a tripod, try doing a second-curtain shutter sync, which will fire the flash when the shutter opens, then once morebefore the shutter closes. This effect will illuminate the background and foreground. This technique is used a lot in club photography (which is why you cansee the background lights well). The tripod will stop any light trails from forming, thus you get a well exposed picture, granted you use the right settings.
