So the tungsten temp gives it that vintage look?

rizobs - I dont know why, but for some reason I thought your 1st picture was actual tea cups on a table. Only after the third time, did I realize it was aride. LOL

Well tungsten gives it a cold blueish look whenshot under reasonably neutral temperature light (a flash). Tungsten film or the simulated setting on DSLR ismade for shooting at night under like street/city lights that are very warm yellow/orange light, the blue/cyan of tungsten film or the simulated settingcounter act that making the light reasonable even in those lighting situations.

Thats just one way to achieve that look that I wouldn't necessarily call vintage but more "de-skilled" as thats where the look comes from is whenregular joe had 35mm film camera and the film processed and developed at a drug store post the advent of color and 35mm film pre digital, so it was often doneno so well with bad lighting or the wrong film or not processed well or not color corrected in development. So they look like someone who basically in short, doesn't know what they're doing took the photographs. People knew how to color correct film when color film as we know it today was invented in the1960s. It's just they didn't have computers to automate processes like film development today so a lot of it in the 1960-90s is very askew tonally.

Here are my 1st attempt at B&W conversion ..

does the d40x have the auto focus motor? or is it like the d40 where it will only AF with certain lenses?

I post a lot of my photos here, so I thought I'd share the news.

My homie from a dance crew in the bay hooked me up with ZION I's (rap duo) management to photograph them + their new recording spot, where they'reholding a listening party on friday.

Pretty juiced/kinda scared. But deffffinitely excited!

No, it's exactly like the D40 - and the D60. You have to get to the older D50 or the D70 and up to get the autofocus motor.

I've been shooting photos but haven't had anything that is considered worth posting. This is a "just cause" photo.

+1 - I been trying new things, but I have hated almost everything - example the entire galleria series, but nevertheless I posted them. The onesitting in the window looking at the bridge, that been in my PC for 3 weeks and the last 3 they almost got trashed but decided to convert to Blk and White ...

BTW, I like the way the picture looks man, did you do that with the fisheye? I have been thinking about getting me one, but I have read that on a 1.6 crop theeffect is barely noticeble - Unlike on a full frame .. I was wondering if this is true and if it is should I get the 10mm then? I was looking at the 15mm Canonor Sigma.

Thanks guys

Glad you liked it/them - I tried some B/W conversion with pictures that otherwise would of have gotten trashed by me cause I didnt like and for some itseems that it work for others I'm still debating if I should even post ...

If you are doing portraits I think the 50mm 1.8 should be good enough - maybe to get extra sharp you might have to stop down so you probably willneed a flash and diffuser .. If you want to go with a lens I suggest the 50 1.4 or a Sigma 30 1.4 which both will run you around the 300 bucks mark and youstill have enough for a flash ....

Make sure the background is solid white and if you can put sometime of light with a diffuser shinning down would be perfect ..

At least this is what I have read in most forums that I have been lurking in ... I can be completely wrong

Proper not trying to disrespect or anything but none of those pictures but 1 look good to me - the tilt do not work and for the most part the subjects arelacking interest. I suggest you do not tilt all your photo as no lie I already have a neck ache from trying to view them straight and I actually like them morestraight -

1. its so tilted that I rather just skip to the second one - but from looking at the composition, what was you trying to accomplish? Power lines along withlight poles? just not really working tilted or not ..

2. My favorite and I feel this one would of have a lot of potential if it would of have been straight and had a different composition - the statue at thebottom (subj) is interesting but from the side its just not working either completely to the back giving another view or from the front in another compositionbut like that - don't like it ...

3 4 5 6 are almost all in the same position as one ...

edit - I'm guessing 6 was you trying to say you was gone - I see the bus line now - but as you can see its to jumble up with everything - you did not doanything to isolate the bus sign so anything that is looking at it is like ok ... that would of have benefited from getting closer to the subject and trying toisolated ...

sorry if you feel offended man, but at least this can help you improve - many people might like these but for me they aren't working. At least you can feelbetter knowing I'm a total n00b man ...

elboricua 6- thanks man, its all good I just started so I dont mind the help! i see what your saying about the pictures to! The thing you said about thesubject helped me alot now i have some what of how to take a decent picture....any other tips..?

those are the tips I have man .. this is a quick photoshop trying to show you what I mean ...

I just tilted the picture straight - place the subj a third to the left because the sign is pointing right .. most of the time you might want to make thethirds to where people are looking or your subj is heading .. not the place in stone rule but one that can make some pictures look better .. once again notsomething that you have to do .. and as you can see you are only focusing on the subject because you isolated the background ....

the one with the statue I can come up with something right quick but its just not in a desirable place for me to even think of what ...

oh also do not frame your pictures .. try to leave space for composition/cropping later on ... at least thats what I do ..
