Tyreke had a great rookie year, 20pts, 5rb, 5ast. It was looking pretty good until Cousins and his horrible attitude showed up the next year. It is hard to get anything going when your starting center is constantly undermining the coach and disrupting the team's chemistry. I really think a change of scenery will do wonders for him.

 don't blame Cousins for Evans poor performance, his fg percentage is horrible yet he still jack up 3s and jumpers instead of going to the hole..

they had him playing 1/2/3. but seriously, the kid can ball. yeah, he needs to improve his shot, but more importantly shot selection. he should be taking everything to the hole. he's james harden without a jumpshot

  at CP not understanding the difficulty of drafting and not being a God awful team

Oh to be a fan of a prestigious and cushy franchise.

*oh noooez the best center in the NBA might not resign here*

*the best players will always play here, because it's the Lakers*

Doesn't get any nerfier than that

So you think I don't follow the rest of the teams in the league and how they're built?

Or that we haven't had this discussion EVERY YEAR in the NBA thread?

OKC built that team in 3 drafts. And have now limited their ceiling with two unwise trades. I took notice bro.

Celtics suck tomorrow, have a chance to be STELLAR in 2016-17.

None of that got to do with my team.

Scott, Corn, I hear you guys, but its 2013. Takes 11 seconds to find out from smart folks Treke Evans 48 mil is bad business.

This isn't 1992. People are smarter than ever. Info is easily available. Any fanbase that wants those type players "to make a run" should lose their team.

3-4 years of solid drafting >>>>>>>>>>>>>Reke/Iggy/Rudy type contracts crippling you THOSE SAME 3-4 years!!!!

But at the same time Solid drafting isn't easy, and is a risk. Those type of players may cripple your franchise financially, but by overpaying those players you get to put out a product that is at least worth watching, semi competitive, etc. 3-4 years of solid drafting (which i'm assuming you're saying would amount to an increase in wins in that same 3-4 year span) isn't all that likely. Most teams don't get competitive through the draft, and normally only make that jump if they get a marquee free agent.

So although paying the reke's, Iggy, Rudy types excess money may seem dumb, you end up at the very least putting out a decent, competent team night in and night out as oppose to getting smacked every night, hoping that this will aid in ping pong balls and for an incoming rookie to change the face of your franchise.

Exactly!

Proven success is better than potential. Teams know exactly what we are going to get when they sign Reke, Iggy and Rudy. Not so much when drafting a player. I mean who knew Hasheem Thabeet would be such a bum or that Paul George would become an all star caliber player. Drafting is sort of like gambling, you place your bets players based on their college production and hope that it can translate to the NBA.

BTW, for those of you confused by my Laker fandom.
My baseball team been rebuilding for 105 years.

I have patience. 3-4 years isn't **** guys.

Different sport obviously, but I do understand rebuilding, drafting, wise value contracts etc.

Indeed. 48, 56, and ?? Million wasted dollars and out in round 1, if they even make the playoffs.

Agreed.

Don't lie, CP. Anyone who spends time in the Laker thread sees how frustrated you get when we don't win a title EVERY year.

Absolutely true.

Hence me saying different sports, etc.

I DEMAND the Lakers win, every, single, year.

The Cubs never heard a word from me.

Lakers established their pedigree. We expect it to be that way. Cubs have not. So why would I have same expectations for both?????

I'm not demanding titles from the Pelicans. I want them to be smarter, not waste money, then cry "broke" in 4 years and blame market size for their poor decisions. Understand?

No way Lebron leaves the East in 2014. The East is a walk in the park compared to the West. Any team regardless of seeding can upset in the West, while it will take a miracle to do that in the East.

You kidding me?

In the West right now you got OKC, and San Antonio.

Outside of that? Unless Dwight signs with Houston, what team is scary? Golden State? Denver? LAC? Not to the Heat.

In the East you gotta worry about Chicago, Indiana (both of which are more physical than any team out west by a longshot), the Nets, and New York to worry about.

The things all of those teams have that the West lacks? Centers that can get it done. Tyson Chandler, Roy, Noah, and Brook. All cause headaches for Miami, for different reasons.

Miami can run teams like Golden State and LAC into the ground. Their defenders would kill their guards in a seven game series.

Only team I didn't mention is Memphis because I ain't got a clue what they got up their sleeve this year.

My friend used to say the same thing when he was a Lakers fan while the 49ers and Giants were doing bad a few years ago

My bad dude. Didn't mean to offend you. Obviously you understand OKC or Boston are the exception to the norm of successfully rebuilding. Usually takes a few consecutive good moves and an extraordinary event (Durant being God, KG/Ray/Pierce coming together) to make it happen.

Parity in the NBA is the worst amongst all sports. How many different teams have won or been in the finals in the last 2-3 decades?

 At the beginning of the season the expectation was warranted. Too bad injuries derailed what could have been.

Let's be honest the Laker's aren't going to rebuild through the draft like CP suggest. They have all the cap space they want for the 2014 season and I could see them luring a couple big free agents down to LA.

Most fans (including myself) are laughing at the Lakers now, but when they reload in 2014 they will be playoff contenders again.

I feel as though that its so unlikely to get a good team through the draft. Unless you get a marquee free agent, a dynamo trade, you're stuck in the cellar.

There's a reason why the same teams are in the lottery every year. The only reason why one of those teams gets out of the lottery is through a trade, a free agent signing, or via a home run player in the draft which is unlikely.

OKC got 3 franchise caliber players back to back to back. If you're going to do that, then of course build through the draft  but how often does that happen?

So if a team is in the cellar, at the bottom of the league, they have no choice but to overpay/trade for above average players or continue getting smacked year in and year out.

At the end of the day, does one choose to suck and tank every year for ping pong balls or work through free agency/trades to get a decent team? I would choose the latter, simply because "Drafting well" is merely a matter of luck more times than not.

Nope apparently all rebuilding teams should be able to OKC/Boston it.

Don't forget, LA has pulled West, Baylor, Magic, Worthy, Kobe, Bynum out the draft plus guys like Scott, Green, Divac, Van Exel, Eddie, Marc Gasol. It ain't all FA. We've drafted well too.

KG and Minny HAD Ray Allen, they traded him.
The Bucks HAD Dirk, they traded him.
Hornets HAD Kobe. Pacers HAD Kawhi.

Teams give up on 20-21 year olds so fast its hilarious.

But we have SEVEN (!!!!) teams lined up for Greg Oden, and I'm the one not getting "how difficult" it is?

It's difficult cuz teams just aren't as great as the Lakers.

There's your answer to your rhetorical question. Happy?

Points at Memphis, Utah, Orlando, Golden State recent rebuilds. (Orld still constructing but in great shape).
Memphis, good point.

Utah? Orlando? Now you're just trying reaching.

GS? They are that sucky team that tried really hard to make it to the playoffs as a 6-8 seed.

I thought you were looking for contenders like OKC, Boston in 08, etc.

Can't have your cake and eat it.

I hate that I'm spending my last 30 minutes in Berlin on NT talking about this

Be fair, Greg Oden won't be getting Tiago Splitter money, or even Spencer Hawes money. Son will sign a very small contract. He knows he has to prove himself, regardless of where he goes.

GSW just got to the playoffs this year. No one even predicted them to have the year that they did. For all we know it could be a fluke. And even so, my point is that no one predicted steph to be a potential franchise player coming into the draft. That's luck. They took a chance and won.

Memphis didn't start moving until they got ZBO and Tony Allen, neither of whom they drafted. Hell, two of their prized draft picks this decade aren't even on the team anymore.

Orlando didn't win at all last year, and they'll probably lose a lot of games again this year. And for what? To get another high draft pick that puts them in the same position. It's a reoccurring cycle unless something drastic changes it.

Utah traded for Boozer to pair him with Dwill to make those playoff runs. As it stands for them now, they are a fringe playoff team at best. Nothing about them says they'll even be in the playoffs again next year, let alone make a dint in the playoffs.

Unless you get lucky in the draft, the good teams in the league have made "that" jump via over avenues aside from the draft.

Indy, Chi and the Nets would be a headache for the Heat the way they are composed currently. But if Miami gets a center this offseason, it would definitely make things easier. Sure they gave the Heats trouble, but if they were to sign Oden or Birdman had a full offseason with the team they might not have such an issue.

My main point is Lebron is not leaving the East, not about the Heats team. You can't compare the problems that the Heat have to what Lebron might face if he himself moves to the Western conference. What if he signs with GSW, LAC, LAL or teams up with Dwight, then physical play might not be a problem.

The one thing I can guarantee is that if Lebron stays in the East he is always making it out of the 1st round every year.

Bottom line is, rebuilding isn't a black and white science.

It involves luck, good drafting, smart cap use (especially for the small market teams), good coach/front office/organization.
