So i just landed a job interview for a luxury retail store (think like gucci, louis etc)

the person who got me the interview urged me to dress to impress and recommended i come in a suit

im not really a suit kind of guy so i was planning to wear a shirt with a cardigan and some slacks with like boat shoes or clarks

so i just wanted input from NT GQ

If i do need to go the suit route can i get some tips cause ill have this weekend to shop and get any alterations necessary

Really need the job so i need your advice fambs

It's not even a question, wear a suit. If you get a job there, that's what you'll be wearing except you'll be wearing their suits aka the good stuff. You'll get an allowance for that so you won't have to pay yourself. I mention this since a lot wonder how do SAs afford to wear the stuff themselves.

Make sure the suit is good fitting. You don't have to break the bank as well. Fast fashion brands will suffice.

Prep up, know about the brand, its history, its current projects and if you really want to wow them pull up the 10k statement and tell them how the firm is doing compared to previous years.

Good luck.

Should have just posted this in the DB thread.

Its half what you wear but the other half (more important half) is how everything fits. If it fits nice, you can get away with a lot.

take dudes advice and go in a suit

You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not wearing a suit. Always, always wear a suit to an interview. What wj4 is 100%. It's more about what you know than how you dress.

And for God's sake, do not wear a cardigan with boat shoes :smh:

You're going to a job interview not having lunch with a friend on a Saturday Afternoon during the Fall

Side question: How old are you OP?

appreciate the advice didnt think about looking up company profits

problem is i dont know which store im applying for as its for a new luxury mall kinda thing so they are hiring for all stores and they just gave me a basis they are just ganna offer me a job at the store that they feel i am most suited for but thats if i get the job

i dont even know how to really prep for the interview cause of this but im a smooth talker so im hoping to just wing it

i guess ill go with the suit i dont really own suits and the ones i do own ive outgrown so i was planning on going to H&M and getting one and altering it if necessary

do you guys have any other similar stores i should try? suit color combinations? would a black suit with a skinny black tie be too boring?

also i have some designer belts should i wear them or just go with a plain leather belt? and what kind of shoes should i go purchase as i do not own dress shoes either

thanks again

the interview is on a weekday next week i have this weekend to get prepared

im a young college student not of legal drinking age

Vicks jersey and oly 7s never failed me

But on a serious note, if he says go in a suit, it means go in a suit. They won't expect you to look like Harvey specter but try and get it tailored if you have the time

How much suit can you afford?
really not tryna spend that much but if i need to make the investment in myself ill try to make it work

my ideal budget is less than 300 for everything suit and shoes

Get into yo daddy's closet and grab some big boy cloths or bust out your "heat" and camo shorts

yea son wear the suit to the interview and on the job. Not sure what your frame of you body is but me personally i say get them tailored. Dont break the bank on a part time job unless you plan to use the suit later on when u get your career job or needed occasions. But srs get your outfits tailored son!

I'm gonna cut you some slack, because you're still a kid.

DO NOT wear a black suit. Again, you're going to a job interview, not to a funeral. Wear either a Solid colored Navy Blue, Charcoal, or Grey suit. Make sure the suits have no patterns i.e check, bold stripes. You can get away with subtle stripes, but make sure it's not too noticeable. Wearing a clean white dress shirt is safe, but you can make yourself look good if you have a spread collar with a decent Full Windsor knot.

If you don't want to wear a white shirt, then wear a light colored blue shirt. Make sure it's not a bright blue either. As for the tie, you can wear really whatever you want. Just make use proper judgement and make sure the knot is tied properly. Do not look sloppy. You're not limited to just blue and white, but you get where I'm going with this. Your friend said, dress to impress. Whatever you pick, make sure it's professional and fashion forward. You should always be professional first.

Wear a plain belt that matches your shoes. Don't wear anything that has a loud/obnoxious buckle. You don't want to be seen as THAT guy.

As for shoes--Since you do not own dress shoes, I'd recommend you go to a Macy's or something and ask the Sales Associate to show you all their captoes/oxfords.Whatever shoes you pick make sure they have a leather sole as well and make sure your shoes as shined and you wear proper dress socks. As for shoe color, it's either black, brown or walnut. I personally like Walnut, but not everyone can pull it off. Since you want to come off as "fashion-forward", I'd go with brown or walnut colored shoes.

DO NOT get that outfit you just described from H&M with that skinny tie

P.S. Whatever suit you get, you HAVE TO get some kind alternations done. No off the rack suit ever fits someone 100% perfectly. If' you're under 5'10--Make sure you get a short. That way you'd save yourself the hassle of shortening the sleeves and stuff. If you're slim, get a slim fit suit.

This is why I'm giving you a break. Most kids your age do not know how to dress up for interviews.

any other advice? really trying to land the job i already made it past the first stage getting the interview i just gotta finish strong now

if i get this job i will be able to  pay my way through school

P.S. Bring some kind of bag with you and a nice leather notepad to keep several copies of your resume in.

Something like this...

It's great, because you can keep notes during the interview and it has pockets on the other side for your resume. The reason why it's good to have a notepad is because it shows attentiveness and willingness to learn. Showcasing those skills does well during interviews. Trust me.

And actually use the notepad during the interview

Please don't wear a designer belt. Try to buy a navy or grey suit.

In your case keep it simple. I've never purchased a suit from a fast fashion type store (H&M/Zara), so I have little advice in that area.

What's your budget? I feel Banana Republic has nice slim entry level suits, and you can usually purchase them for under $250 with discounts (They always have sales).

Don't ever say "I'm not a suit kind of guy." again,
