Moving back to NYC from Florida, is it possible?

Alright, so the situation with me is I was born in the Bronx, and moved to South Florida when I was 7. Visited the summers in '04, '08 - 10, and just got back from summer vacation out there Monday. Honestly, I've never felt more at home than this summer I spent it out there. When I touched down at the LGA I felt at ease. I felt like I was home you know? It felt great being on the block, chilling with my family, bros, meeting new people. The culture, especially dominican presence, makes me feel welcomed unlike how I feel out here. I guess I'm a bit depressed you feel me? Out here walking at 3 am in my hood, I don't feel comfortable. I don't know why n_'s claim the Bronx is "scary", I've walked a good number of blocks at 2 - 3 AM plenty of times. As late as 4 AM, and I felt COMPLETELY at ease. Of course I have my guard up, but still, I just feel a sense of ease. Now im entering my final year of HS and I was looking to move up north, parents didn't take to kindly to the idea. Rejected it without hesitation, after telling them I was looking at admissions for John Jay. I have family up there, so the relocation wouldn't be hard. I want to know if it's possible to go to school and hold a part time job at the same time. Would I be able to rent out a studio apartment while doing both? I'm the type of individual with a plan, I set my mind to something I'll do it. Florida just isn't the place I want to spend my college years, or the rest of my life at. It's to slow paced for me, the clubs you hit up a couple of times, and it's the same ****. Past 2 everything is dead, NYC I was out with bro's having a blast with something or somewhere to go. Just staring out the window, seeing that sunrise from the apartment was good. The summer weather, it's amazing and beats this Florida rain. Is it possible to make the move? If you can relate to my story, please share your success or the hardships you faced with a move like this. Thanks NT.

tl;dr It's worth the read.

Dont get your own place, dont know how rent is in NY,but try to rent a room with friends or famb.

It'll be cheaper and easier to save.

Moved to nyc about 3 months ago from Florida and rent a 2br in Brooklyn($1600) with a homie....it is not cheap, its hectic, stressful and a ton of other things..but it is nyc and im happy I made the move. came out here with around 4 grand, should of been 10. Ran through all of it to get set up out here. It is possible to move here though, just need the money saved..however surviving? with a part time job? needing to pay rent? nahhh not likely man. i'd say you need to make a minimum of 500$ a week to get by out here if you have rent/bills along with weekly expenses and even the daily that come with living in nyc.

hope that helps..good luck bro, I did it and am still doing it so there is no reason you cant make it work either..just know nyc=$$$$$$

I've got family up there, and I've talked to them about the situation. My grandma said especially it was fine as long as I was in school, and held a part time job.

Move to the Heights.

I'm not even being sarcastic.
I've been to the heights plenty of times, family friends definitely live out there.

My cousin was telling me the exact same thing, it's expensive to live out there. He lives in a studio with his girl, a pretty big studio and he pays about 950. I think the utilities like water, light, and heating are included in the rent. I'm not sure, but I would definitely try a move to a studio as a first time place for me.

find some roomies, get a job with a flexible schedule till you finish up school, it might be rough but its possible....you wont be able to hold a place on your own, start a new job and continue school....you gotta pick and choose, look for night jobs.

ny is expensive , competitive and moves at light speed. you need to be ready mentally more than anything here. stress is what does everyone in here. you need a better than decent job to survive here. the cheaper you go , the more hood it'll be. the more hood it is the less likely you'll be taking those 3am walks you to think you'll be able to take on the regular, especially in the hood.

don't know if you have a car or plan on having one but thats another headache that i wish on no one. alternate side parking, 15 min traffic meters, insurance thats like rent itself.

you're young and wanna enjoy your genitals, you can enjoy them in florida and live better. just my humble .....

OP your suffering from grassisgreeneritis. It happens to me everytime I visit a nice city. I mean NYC is def poppin but you could have easily had a terrible experience up here and wrote a post about how FL > NYC as laughable as that is.

I agree with the poster saying finish up school in FL first. Tuition is cheaper and it's much less hectic down there.

If you still wanna move up here be ready to be stressed out. NYC is not an easy place to live if you don't have wealthy parents. Be prepared to work hard to live in this atmosphere because in essence that's what your paying for.

If you got money saved....go get triple that amount. I'd think that 10 g's should cover you for a couple months over here while you look and secure work.

Op I didn't read all your post but u can try nse(national study exchange) see if your college offers it. I was going to do it last year but decided to finish school in my home state then move to nyu. Was going to attend queens college. Pretty much u go to a school in a different state as if u was still going to school in FLA. Financial aid, tuition, and everything for the most part come from your home school(depending on the school) . You can do nse for a year and finish up school when u get back. http://www.nse.org

People in Florida thinking the grass is greener in NYC during the summertime =

Couldnt pay me to move back to NY.............straight young man post

I'm taking into consideration what everyone is saying, this is a big decision to make on my part. If I do go through with it, I'd have a place to stay where I could definitely live without a problem. An uncle, and my grandmothers apartment, not to mention family friends that I've stayed with. I'm big on saving since I don't like spending money on things that are not necessities. Parents call me cheap, but I've seen what spending money left and right can leave you with. I'm starting to save now, and will for damn sure keep saving money while I'm in school. I've seen the stressful situations NYC has put some of my family in, but Tampa has hit us harder honestly. Even my moms said it herself, if we stayed in the Bronx my dad would've been making a hell of a lot more money. Keep the suggestions coming though, open to more.

What are you trying to study in college? Any vague career plans? That'll affect your decision...

A topic is car insurance, I heard it's mad expensive, especially since someone recently posted here that it's a problem. What are the rates like? For example my car is a 1997 Accord, would I be seeing some crazy *** rates?

Why don't u just register the car in a different state and get your insurance in that state. Don't some new yorkers do that anyway.

Ok op I read your first post. What colleges have u been accepted to already in nyc? Don't your fam in nyc have a way for u to pay cheaper insurance. U could always join the army to be set with school paid for and funds to live off of. If u havnt caked up at least five stacks before fall semester starts u going to fail. Them freshmen year books be hurting the pockets.

I was thinking of going into the Navy after I got my Bachelors so that I could go in as an Officer. My top choice though is John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Family would help me to an extent, since I don't want to be the type to be mad dependent on them.

I actually do know people that do that, I was contemplating that option.
