Generational talent is simply this: Guys who have an out-sized impact on winning a basketball games, guys who's presence on the floor tilts every possession in your favour.

Current generational talents (excluding guys no longer in their primes, or post back injury Dwight)

Lebron
Durant
CP3

thats it, thats the list.
Dirk has won a league MVP and Finals MVP. Out of that list, only Lebron has done any of those things. Yet Durant and CP3 are 'generational talents' and Dirk isn't?

That's tough, because you're going to get swept. That's 2 more games in your building. Some like this year's draft enough to rather have Wggins or Embiid or whoever. But I don't like the prospect of losing on purpose either. I think I'll take the 8th seed and just be happy to extend the series to 5 or 6. Now I call sell FAs we are an uptrending playoff team with a young core instead of a perpetual cellar dweller.

Boom. Because unless you're the Lakers, Heat, Clippers, or Knicks or something, no one is going to a team that isn't competitive.

Thats way too broad a definition of a generational player then

I think you have to put Griffin, George, Curry and Westbrook on the prime generational players list then. All those guys have an out-sized impact of winning Basketball games and their presence is felt on the floor

By that definition, this is a list who I think guys who were "generational "guys in the past 25 years

Jordan
Magic
Kareem
Kobe
Shaq
Duncan
Bird
Hakeem
Isiah
Lebron
Wade
KG
McHale
Dirk
Nash
Robinson
Pippen
Barkley
Malone
Ewing
Penny
Stockton
Payton
Rodman
Drexler
Reggie Miller
Iverson
Kidd
McGrady
Dominque
Webber
Grant Hill
Yao

Yeah especially if i know im gone in the first round

But winning and getting in the playoffs brings hope. For teams like Charlotte, getting in the playoffs alone increases support from people and fans of charlotte. Loosing every game only to go in the lottery and draft a player to continue the process does nothing.

Idc what anybody says prime lamar odom was a generational talent, 6'10 point forward, crazy handles & vision :smh:

Just thought about when we made the 8 seed and took the champion Lakers to 6 games. That was definitely worth it, for the team and the city and fans. And now that OKC has done it and Portland this yr, every team will believe they're on the same accelerated trajectory

I always felt the whole notion of Lamar Odom not living up to his potential was overblown. He was never particularly great at any one thing which to me is a necessity of being a "generational talent." I mean he was 6'10 and could handle, but he didn't have an elite handle. Wasn't an elite shooter, wasn't an elite ball handler or defender, like he didn't do anything great that would suggest he was going to be a multiple time all star or an all NBA performer.

This is all hindsight of course, but at the same time Huge pg's almost never work out that well, despite how sexy they appear to be for a basketball team. It's why his career trended upward when he made the transition to SF, then to PF with the Lakers.

for you guys it was a young up and coming team with a lot of talent, which is different than the hawks making the first round for the 8th straight year with a bunch of average joes

Exactly. You can sell that to your community. You can gain support for your franchise by making the playoffs. You can appeal to great players when you make the playoffs. Consistently intentionally not making the playoffs due to tanking or draft positioning does nothing most of the time.

The guys you omitted especially

Isiah,Nash,Pippen, Stockton, Ewing, Payton, Drexler, Kidd and Iverson definitely had an out-sized impact on winning Basketball games and their presence was always felt on the floor

What's the alternative for the hawks though? The city already doesn't embrace the team, imagine if they actually sucked and didn't make the playoffs?

lamar was the most inconsistent player i have ever seen he would get 20 rebounds one night and 3 the next

he would do this one night

then this the next

i mean its hard for them, im sure they know that they have no shot of winning a championship if they keep this up. seems like making the playoffs every year is more important for them than taking a risk with the lottery in order to get someone to build a better team around and there's nothing wrong with that. just dont let me see the hawks owner ever complain about why his team never wins championships

some those guys have to be in the right system for them to have that type of impact.

but basically if you had garbage a healthy wade can get you to the playoffs, if you have chris paul you WILL have an elite end of game offense it doesn't matter who's on the team, Barkely will give you so many extra possessions, that your offense can't stink, hakeem was so mobile and such a stout rim defender your teams going to defend even if you have a bunch of stiffs. ect ect

Westbrook/iverson/isiah guarantees you nothing.
