On Friday, a catastrophic typhoon tore through the Philippines with wind speeds of well over 140 miles per hour.  Meteorologists have described Super Typhoon Haiyan as one of the worst storms in human history.

It's feared that over 10,000 people in the city of Tacloban alone may have lost their lives in this tragedy, and far more suffer from injury and displacement.  Save the Children estimates that over 7,000 schools may have been damaged, and over 300,000 children have been affected.

At a time when many of us are preparing to spend Thanksgiving with loved ones, this tragedy reminds us just how fragile our lives, our homes, and our families truly are.

Please consider expressing your gratitude by sharing some of your bounty and good fortune with those who now suffer in the wake of this terrible disaster.

In 2011, we raised over $20,000 to support the people of Japan in the aftermath of a terrible earthquake and tsunami.  We've also raised over $18,000 for famine relief efforts in the horn of Africa.

It's time for our community to answer the call once again.  It's time for us to bring out the best in each other, and to accomplish something together that none of us could possibly achieve separately.

Please join me in supporting disaster relief efforts in the Philippines.

To help, we've established a community fundraising page through Mercy Corps, the same organization we trusted with our earthquake relief fundraiser.

You can find the page here:   https://www.mercycorps.org/people/niketalk/philippines

As with previous fundraisers, we're glad to recognize those who've so generously chosen to offer their support with a special badge.

The following badges, made possible thanks to submissions by @Fongstarr, @Nawzlew, and @spicedham, will be awarded to all contributors:

$10 - 24  Basic Supporter Badge

$25 - 99  Special Contributor Badge

$100+  Elite Fundraiser Badge

(If you like one badge in particular, you can always have your choice of any badge equal to or lesser than your pledge level.  Already donated?  You can combine donations to reach a higher badge level.  Just send me a message.)

Badges will be rolling out soon to those who've already contributed.

To get credit for your donation, be sure you leave your NikeTalk screen name in a comment when you submit your contribution!!

If you cannot afford to contribute money, please spare us a moment of your time and help us spread the word.  Our initial goal is $2,000.  Let's get it, #NT.

Our friends in the Philippines need our help.

Update 11/13 -

Thanks to all of you, we've now reached our initial goal of $2,000, but we can't stop there!

Tacloban, which over 220,000 people called home just last week, has been almost completely razed by the storm.

These satellite images, taken before and after Haiyan made landfall, speak volumes:

One of the most powerful storms in human history demands one of the most powerful responses in human history.  It's time to reverse these images.

We've seen what category 5 hurricanes and 7.1 earthquakes can do.  Now let's see what human compassion and kindness can accomplish.

Let's lend our community's full strength to the inspiring global response to super typhoon Haiyan.

In honor of your sacrifices and contributions, NikeTalk will match ALL donations made through our fundraising page through December 11th, up to a total of $10,000.

Let's go!

In behalf of my fellow countrymen here in the Philippines, I'd like to thank the NT Family for the support. We definitely appreciate it.

Hat's off to all of you.
