Open run at your gym. What are your in-house rules?

wow Offensive foul?

- im not giving you ball, you get foul call it. you a grown man. im not speaking up for you.

Yeap. You play against dudes who doesn't know how to play correctly you will get hurt.

A lotta pussass rules where yall play at. I've never been to a gym where offensive fouls are called

All these other rules yall are listing are terrible, because a lot of cats come out and try to referee more than they play anyways. Just ****** play, no callin fouls on ticky tack **** and trying to be a zebra.

I've seen plenty scraps and arguments when I hoop, hell I've even seen a ***** hold the ball and shoot on the other end for 10 minutes because they didn't respect his call

Majority of gyms I play at, go by 1's or 2's to 9, 10, 12, or 15. No shot clock, time clock, lists or nothing. Rarely have I seen diplomatic approaches to pickup ball. I will say they work though.

The place where i play at has a lot of big Samoan. Believe it or not but these dudes are some of the most ignorant dudes on the court. They would barrels their shoulder into your chest or neck. We're playing basketball not football.

Who calls offensive fouls or 3 seconds in a pickup game?

The most important rule is no calling "and 1".  If you call foul and make the shot, it doesn't count but you get ball back.

I've never heard of 3 secs in pick up game but offensive foul can prevent big dudes who use their elbow to clear you off for the lay up. There's a lot of dirty players where i play. They often uses elbow or use their big body to barrel right into your upper chest to knock defender off.

If there's no offensive foul then there will be a lot of dirty tactics that big player will use to their advantage. If you're only 6'2 how are you going to defend a 6'6 dude who uses elbow often?

depends on the venue:

Gym A -
-all games go to 15
-1's and 2's
-call your own fouls
-around here they call next "downs"
-winning squad stays on til they lose

Gym B-
-1st game to 15 in between 12 and last to 15
-1's and 2's if we run the long way
-everything is worth 1 if we run the short way
-winning squad stays til they lose
-call your own fouls

Before 8 points are scored I'm probably not going to call foul unless it is obvious or I lose the ball and can't get it back. But after 8 points anything is getting called. The old school heads always say anything after 8 is crunchtime, and that non call because you want to have your pride may have you sitting for several games waiting to get back on. Better to make a controversial call than to have your pride and be waiting to get back on.

AND ONE is NOT a call, we keep playing...

Absolutely. Ol' flagrant foul 3 commitin' *** dudes. Dudes who just got out the big house foul hard too. My ex brother in law was staying at our house for a while after he got out, was just laying around all day drinking so my mom suggests I take him to go hoop with me. We go and he's straight hammering dudes like Michael Irving was on Adam Sandler in The Longest Yard, talking bout "no blood no foul." i was like dude, he is bleeding though look, you broke his nose. Their ball up top.

at most it goes up to 11. have to win by at least 2
all scores 1 point
Winner stays on(think thats universal)

I never ever call foul unless game is real close (itd be selfish towards my teammates if I dont call it)
I hate people that call carry/palming
I hate people that call travel when I do some next level euro and hop steps

Don't carry don't travel. This ain't football.

Yoo I'm dying at offensive fouls, 3 second calls and the 5 second back down rule

What gives anyone the authority to stop the game, yell 3 seconds, take the ball and go the other way with it  And if you got a guy who backs down too long, too much, to the point where its a problem, tell him to get off the god damn court. When going to the gym with multiple courts there's always that court in the back where its all arguing and no basketball. I've always wondered how it gets like that, now I know. Just friggin play basketball.

My rules based off what I've seen in here.

No offensive fouls, 3 seconds, or 5 second backdowns
Get your squad, get in line, and be a civil human being.
Winner stays. You earned it. Play for keeps. If you wanna play more do something about it and win.
Up to 11 win by 2
1's and 2's
Call your own fouls.
If fouled and you make it, count it. If not, you get the ball back.

That's it. If y'all are adding all this nonsense then that's a gym ill avoid. Too many people fantasizing that they're in the NBA.

During the summer I've got it as good as gets. Every week my old coach has open gyms at the high school and plays with us. Its all current high schoolers playing varsity some going on to play college ball some not or alumni who have attended in the past. Some who are playing, or have played college ball, some not. Bring your friends but know your place cause you are playing with an actual authority figure, the head coach running the open gym.

i have had an offensive foul called on me while backing someone down in the post

but in all my years of pickup i dont think i have ever seen anyone take a charge

play to 11, win by 2

check it up, must pass first

call your own fouls

no other rules needed

1's and 2's to 11. Win by 2

Call own fouls.

The person taking it up top has to pass.

Winner stays.

I read the point somewhere, if you play 1 and 2 and not 2 and 3, you should almost play 1 and 1.5.

We do play if you call foul and make it then no bucket. Sucks sometime when you get smashed and it still goes in but it keeps people from calling BS every time they shoot. Then again, you get weak people who foul every time the other team gets game point.

Offensive foul - my thoughts are this: I play a lot at 24 hour fitness and get muscle heads who just want some cardio. Come rhino style down the lane or completely throw you out of the way on rebounds. I won't call charge but I will ask for a checkup. If you get me on a rebound you better watch your ***** because I will take you out next time down.

Yeah otherwise it just encourages certain types to call fouls every time they take a shot.  Encourages you to make a calculated decision.  Personally I always feel like I'm going to make a shot with contact so I shoot myself in the foot by not calling "foul" a lot of the time.  But in a self-reffed game you can't be giving people excuses to call foul every time they miss.

As far as the elbows, I probably would be more likely to say something like "dude, you gotta watch those elbows" before I actually called an offensive foul on somebody.

Win by 2
First game to 16, every other game depends on crowd (players up), usually 13 or 11
1's and 2's

Anyone ever play in a gym where they make you do Shirts vs Skins?
T-Boone Pickens YMCA lunch/mid-day rules. They play shirts and skins.  Far play rules during the week.

Can't win more than 3 straight games. After the 3rd win both teams come off the court.

First 10 to show up play no exceptions

No captains you match up with someone equal to you (my favorite rule) You should the dudes faces when you tell them they have to match up.

next five waiting play no exceptions

The only way you can loose and play again is if there are less than five waiting, and you have to shoot for it with anyone else who wants to play again

What does that mean? Never heard of it before

Basically when ten people show up, The teams are divided equally. For example, one day 4 guys should up together (3 d-1 and 1 d-league) and they were part of the first ten. They had to be on different teams 2 on one team and 2 on the other. Basically everyone divides/matches up with someone similar to thier talent level, so the teams are fairly equally match up wise. This is the YMCA so they are more concerned about everybody getting a chance to play.

I once was up there and they were playing one dribble full court. It was pretty cool, everybody has to be paying attention and one player can't dominate the ball. All you get is one dribble then you have to pass or shoot. I think they were doing it because the there were young kids (11-13) and old guys who really hoop playing together. Has anyone ever heard of that?

Thats pretty dope.

Thx bro

1's and 2's.

First game and last game 21. In between games are to 15.

Call own fouls. Shoot for a disputed call.

How do you guys decide who gets ball at the start of game?

1st to hit a 3?
since its open run, shoot for first ball. yea, from 3. say tops or no tops, die or no die, could mean the difference between, my team getting the ball if you miss, to where if you miss, i have to shoot, if i miss you get another shot, or if you make the first one, i get a chance to shoot too and a chance steal the first ball
