Tomsula brings change to the 49ers atmosphere

In the same way that Mike Singletary's most famous quotes underscore his grandiose and willful persona - "We're going to win the division, I promise you," Singletary vowed in November -- Jim Tomsula's rapidly growing list of quotes nicely capture the change in atmosphere at 49ers headquarters.

"I'm Jim Nobody from Nowhere," said Tomsula, 42, who will lead the 49ers into today's finale against the Cardinals, to reporters last week. And there's plenty more.

Here's Tomsula, a defensive line coach, explaining that he has given offensive coaches plenty of leeway in the run up to today's game: "I keep my spoon in my soup. I don't taste your soup." And on the ephemeral nature of being an NFL coach: "I've coached in different places. I don't run from that. My family is not going to starve, and if my wife has stayed with me for the last 19 years, she's not going anywhere. So I'm good."

The 49ers sideline today will be filled with faces that are unlikely to be around next season, including that of starting quarterback Alex Smith, many of Singletary's assistants and some of the team's soon-to-be free agents. Team President Jed York, however, has made it clear he'd like Tomsula and perhaps a handful of other assistants to remain after a new head coach takes over. For one, York wants to have some degree of continuity after an offseason that could stretch into the summer and beyond due to strife over a collective bargaining agreement.

He also wants Tomsula back because he is the most amiable, charismatic and hard-working assistant on the staff. After being told he'd be the interim head coach Sunday evening, Tomsula spent the night at the 49ers facility and then held his first press conference the next day in a black short-sleeved shirt while sopping sweat from his brow throughout the session.

"You know he apologized to me for not having a suit and tie on because he didn't get a chance to go home last night," York said. "He's the kind of coach that stays here every night. He's the type of guy that grinds every day. He's the kind of guy that is going to make sure that our team is focused this week and he's the kind of guy that I hope is with the San Francisco 49ers for a very long time."

Tomsula was named interim coach, in part, because he's the only coach on the staff with head-coaching experience having done so with the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe in 2006. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native also has been an assistant in Berlin, London and Edinburgh, Scotland, and in the offseason he holds coaching clinics on American football in Italy.

Tomsula suffered knee and hip injuries while playing defensive line at Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C., and those injuries have left him with a waddling gate. But he's propelled by a relentless amount of energy and love for his players. "He's a player's coach," said tight end Vernon Davis. "When you're out there with coach Jim Tomsula, you're having fun. He's funny."

In addition to a lighter atmosphere, Davis also noted that practices have been livelier and more up-tempo. When a reporter said that the 49ers' Friday practice seemed to wrap up 15 minutes earlier than normal, Tomsula quickly jumped in and said it was actually 28 minutes earlier than normal.

"And we actually added three reps," Tomsula said. "So we want to talk about focus? That's focus. The (players) are on, they're hopping, they're popping. We all know you can scream, you can stand on your head, but the pace of a practice is dictated by your players, and that's what happened today."

Last Sunday he was with O-line before the final drive and then he's in the Chris Borland featured video on 49ers.com pumping him up. The guy is a straight up leader of men and as long as he can hire good OC to work with he'll be a great head coach.

The only undefeated head coach in 49er history. :pimp:

So then if Aldon stays and we have him back do we make him a DE then??.....

From what ive seen he is a great leader. Like has been posted before he need to hire the right coordinators.

Sucks to see fangio go, i hope they stay with the 3-4. But getting all three LBs would be awesone.

If they chane to 4-3, who is in the middle?

my question too...we need more DL men
 
Aldon is right DE, Lynch is left DE. Cowboy is right DT(3 tech) and Dorsey/Dial play left DT(1 tech). Tank can play inside and outside.


Borland is mike(because he's so stout in run defense) Bowman is will and Willis is sam

Borland can also play will and bowman would then be the mike. You want pat Sam tho for those TEs.

#TeamTomsula right here. Definitely liking this hire. Very respected person in the organization.
 
Sad to see Lord Fangio go and I wish him the best.

Moving to a 4-3 is intriguing. I'd love to see our defensive talent shine. But still, our O needs help. A lot of help...
 
waiting on that OC announcement since whoever it is will have free reign over that side of the ball
 
I guess its safe to say we all agree here that even with Fangio leaving (which i hate to see him go) our main focus and problem is the OFFENSE!!!??
 
from what I can recall, Tarver did a lot for oakland's front seven with very little talent the past couple of years...although i can't say the same about his secondaries.


that being said, i always felt that the raiders should have let go of dennis allen and olson, while keeping tarver...well, like FTD said, here's to holding our breaths until next season.

Well, I think our main problem was offense based on the fact that we all thought the defense was solid and led by Fangio.  Even though we have great defensive players, scheme makes a big difference.

Without Fangio, I would say that our defense is a bit of a question mark now too.  Not as big as the offense, but just as troublesome IMO.

What I want to know is what is Tomsula's vision for the offense? My intuition tells me he wants to stay a power run team.
