The Timepiece Thread vol: READ THE 1st POST!!!

Apples John Ive says the "Swiss are in trouble" with Apples new iWatch (announcing tomorrow?).

I mean I get what he is saying, it will take a sale or two here and there but really, do people who wear Rolex, Patek, JLC, Omega, etc.. would really trade in for one these gaudy and ugly watches? I mean we are a society of excess where we have a smartphone, a laptop/desktop, a tablet and now including a smart watch, I just do not see majority of people who wear mechanical watches going for a smart watch and just dumping and ignoring mechanicals.

In these day and age, we buy watches for the craftsmanship and look at it as an accessory/jewelry. Yeah I use it to tell time but really the time keeping is more for convenience so I don't have to pull out my phone every time I need to know the time.

Smart watches also aren't like wristwatches where people buy multiples of, I doubt people would be buying Apples watch then buy Samsungs and then LGs so they can switch it around on different days with different clothes on different occasions, they'd have to be compatible with your phones OS, no? I can also see people getting tired of it when it becomes like a clockwork or purchases just like phones and computers where the tech becomes dated after a year so you keep buying but unlike regular mechanical watches, the old ones will likely be obsolete and go to the bottom of your drawer just be sold off to Best Buy for credit. I'm sure others will buy the newest every year anyways but I just do not see someone going "should I get the new Omega Speedy or Apples iWatch?".

What do you guys think? I really do not see myself buying a smart watch, not that I hate them but I just do not see any use for them personally. I also haven't seen one that looks good outside of LG G Watch R which looks decent and that is because it looks like a regular watch.

IMHO, the majority of buyers for the smart watches are the same people who rock fashion watches or don't wear watches currently. The majority of people who are heavily into watches do not seem overly concern or interested in these smart watches. For most, smart watches are a more techy Gshock battery powered watch. Personally I am not worried about the smart watches making a significant dent into popular brands, just like how some people are making a big issue with the advent of quartz watches and the cell phone. As long as people are buying these mechanical watches, companies will still make them.

Thanks bruh... Trying to take a pic with my real camera, with all that glare was frustrating, definitely only got a few decent shots, haven't worn in out yet but will get some wrist shots in shortly

Random : Looked up the prices of cartier love bracelets, wanted a cool bracelet to pair with my watch and ummm them prices :smh:

Yah it's that no AR is one flaw Rolex has, love it on my IWC, looks like there isn't even a crystal there.

Makes photography difficult on Rolexes too.

Funny you say that I also looked them up was thinking of giving one to my girl. I honestly thought I'd pay 1k things are like 6k god lord lol

RFX45 - Extremely difficult, made me just want to use my iPhone

Al Audi, Illphil, Based Mod - Much appreciated fellas

Dweezy - Bro... A couple years back I swore that I saw them around 3ish, and even 2 in some places. I saw 6 and was like W T F , paying all for name at that point, in my opinion at least :rolleyes

sneakerpimp2k8 sneakerpimp2k8 Yep. All in the name a jeweler can make the same bracelet with same or better gold and it would cost $1,000-1500.

I regret not picking up 8-9 years ago when they were only a couple grand. See so many fakes being sold on IG tho. :smh:

Hmmm never even thought of that @sneakerp

And you're right about the fakes, I've seen all sorts of fake on IG, Etsy, in silver, yellow, and even in rose...

Does anyone wear bracelets on the same arm as their watch? If so, which bracelets?

For the Cartier love Bracelet, you also have to keep in mind the price of gold though. 10 years ago an ounce cost ~$400 and then hit it's peak at close to $2k in 2011? Of course Cartier isn't going to drop the price of their jewelry even after the price of gold settled at around $1300 today then include the annual price increase with the luxury watches/jewelry (which for Cartier is twice a year now iirc) then that price can get insane.

I mean yeah you could always get a jeweler to rip it off but to some extent, that is like wearing bootleg watches too and authentic Cartier jewelry doesn't really depreciate much either, looks like they sell decently used but I do not really follow that market.

I think if you're going with a typical cuban or chain link, go with a jeweler and get your best bang for buck but if you're going for a Love bracelet or Juste Un Clou, I personally would rather have the real thing. In the end it is a personal preference though.

I personally don't like doing it especially if the bracelet is metal since it's a risk in scratching the case of the watch. I know plenty that does it but I like to keep my watch pristine as possible so i try to avoid it. I just wear a bracelet on my right wrist instead.

Thanks for the feedback fellas, much appreciated @ marnourjr @eiddyfouw

RFX - I hear you loud and clear, scratching the metal casing didn't even register in my mind, great pointm!!

As for the bracelets, I would rather just get something different as I would pay less with the price of gold, than going for the Cartier.

I always try to wear a bracelet with my watch, but I can't pull it off as naturally as I want it to look. Might be the watch and/or my bracelets.

I know what you mean. Just to be clear, I'm not condoning fake jewelry at all or making a knock-off with a jeweler. Just using that as an example of brand name vs. actual product.

I was pricing out Cartier Love bracelets for me and the Mrs. not too long ago as well.

Mine white gold (7k+), hers pink gold (6k+).

Said **** it. I'd rather spend that on another timepiece honestly.

@illphillip  I'm with you on that.. I just can't do it

Prior to picking up the Rolex the most I had ever spent on a watch was $550 on this Movado back in 2004, and here are my other poverty watches, prior to reading the first page I actually thought Daniel Wellington was a decent watch, I wear it all the time, and it more than serves its purposed but I definitely learned a lot from reading in here. I am definitely looking to add some other quality watches to my rotation but can't always drop 5-10k unfortunately..
