MORGAN COUNTY, Ga. -- An 18-year-old man turned himself in Friday after being charged with stealing thousands that was mistakenly deposited into his bank account.

According to a release from the Madison County Sheriff, Steven Fields withdrew or made purchases totaling nearly $25,000 after a bank teller mistakenly deposited $31,000 into his account.

The money was actually for an account of another man with the same name.

Fields made several ATM withdrawals and made purchases at a car dealer, big box retailer, grocery store and fast food restaurant before the bank realized the error.

The bank tried to make arrangements with Fields to repay the money, but when he couldn't, the bank pressed charges.

Fields is currently in the Madison County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.

Instead of this kid being in jail, the teller who made the mistake should be fired.

As someone whom worked in a bank, teller was an idiot. It takes like 10 seconds at most to verify SSN and address especially with a check that big. Must haven given zero f_.

And you're also legally liable if you spend the money. If it's on your card, best believe they have the full rundown on what you did with it and when. If this ever happens report the mistake ASAP and act like it never happened.

You touch any of the money, you're not going to have a good time. I guarantee it.

A professor of mine said this happened to him before. He said there was a 100,000 deposit in his checking account. He said he never even touched it because he knew it was a mistake. The deposit was sitting in his account for about three months.

I was deposited an extra 3Gs when i was in the Marines.... the other bank who wired the cash called me but i never replied....

Kept the money in my account until i got out...

Yeah , its all gone...

It amazes me that people get held liabke legally... the only people that should be liablw are the bank that made the mistake...

Yeah, I want to hear about what happens to the bank teller and the bank overall in the aftermath.  The kid shouldn't be the only one punished.

If he can't repay the money, he should be in jail. It's theft. No way around it.

Reading the replies in here makes me feel old. mj shrug

Don't see how he's to blame at all. One time the teller have me an extra 200 (2 x 100 bills) during a teller withdrawal. I just deposited it right in my account in the drive up machine

The teller is prolly fired, that's about it.

Person who spends the money takes an L.

He shoulda took all the money out and closed his account and moved
The money was insured I'm sure
That's why I hate banks
I take all my money out during payday and put it in a safe

Only deposit money when I need to pay a bill.
Only money I have in there is the money for this 52 week money challenge

This happened to me once....they took the money back from my next direct deposit. :smh:

Question: Lets say kid took the money out and but it into a savings account to draw interests, would I be able to keep the interest earned?

Im glad no mess like that happened to me at 18 LOL. I know better now, but at 18 this thread woulda prolly been about me! ...

No because it's the banks money in the first place.

Going to have call duck tales on those two stories as well. For the army dude once they noticed the mistake they'd call your bank and have the wire reversed. For blaster once the teller noticed his drawer short $200 at the end of the night if he saw your immediate deposit of $200 right after he could easily just rewrite the withdrawal ticket for your account and pull it right back out w/o asking you.

What if someone breaks into your house and steals the safe? Or what if there's a fire in your home?
