Sometimes I get stuck thinking about how The Neptunes and Timbaland just abruptly came in and turned music upside down and essentially into what it is now. I know everyone is aware they had new sounds, the Neptunes with that weird guitar and Timbaland with the Moog and space synths but besides that they really had some all the way 100% out there new ****. Like prior to when Timbaland really blew in 1997 with Missy and even during that year hip hop was a basic drum pattern with a row of hi hats, and some basic kick and snare over a loop. The people at this time getting the most innovative with the samples were Pete Rock and Dilla but besides that basic but still amazing music. Just basic compared to these two VA Beach cats. When Tim dropped his drums were all over the place, bouncy as hell and were just as noticeable as an instrument. When Neptunes came out, with like Superthug and then Southern Hospitality and Jay - give it it to me those were just completely out of this world. You know you never heard **** like that before.
A big part of what I'm saying is before that there wasn't any easing into it. They just came out of nowhere around 1997-1998 respectively and their stuff was brand new and hitting and ****** heads up.
The second craziest thing is that after they took over the radio and became household names, years later you realize that this whole synth crazy generation is a direct result of them. All the bouncy drum patterns and arpeggio in synths and so forth is from what they pioneered 10-15 years ago. Crazy to think about. Anybody feel what I'm saying? I was only 5-6 when Tim took over and I still remember those sounds that's how impactful these guys were. I was 9-10 when Neptunes had their run so I remember that broad as day. (Usher, Clipse, JT, everything 01-03). Was anyone here of age and blown away by them?
