What are the the top-5 most ICONIC beats in hip-hop?

I'm not, late 30's. It was handed down by an uncle around 89-90.

How much I regret giving up my records!

Criss Cross - Jump
2pac - California Love
Snoop Dogg - Gin & Juice
Dr. Dre - Forgot about Dre
NWA - Straight Outta Compton

Boy the west coast had the game on lock back then.

1. Sugarhill Gang - Rapper Delight
2. Afrika Bambaataa - Planet Rock
3. Run DMC - Walk This Way
4. Biggie - Juicy
5. Jay Z - Hard Knock Life

honorable mention
6. Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg - Nothin But A G Thang
I strongly disagree with Walk This Way. First of all, it's not a hip hop beat. Basically the version that's widely know was a remake. It's the same song that Aerosmith did and Run DMC added lyrics later.

Same thing for Hard Knock Life. It got known because of what it was before. People liked it because they were familiar with the Annie version, which added to the song's popularity.

Agreed, could also make that point with Rapper's Delight as well tho.

That's why I posted The Message as #1 'cause it's an original beat... I would definitely argue that Rapper's Delight as a song is just as iconic or important (if not more so) in the overall history of rap...

But The Message is surely the most iconic beat (imo)

  3. Who am I?
  4. Still Dre
  5. T.R.O.Y
  6. C.R.E.A.M

Couldn't do 5. Had to be 6. These are hands down the most iconic imo.

4 out of the 5 were debatable, but I didn't feel like typing out all of that

. I just picked those two.

Juicy- Biggie

They Reminisce Over You  - Pete Rock

Passin' Me By - The Pharcyde

Nothing But a G Thang - Dr Dre

If I Ruled The World - Nas

How did Check The Rhime not make it up here?

I think someone did mention it. And speaking of ATCQ, I'd put Electric Relaxation on here too.

Humpty Dance - Digital Underground. Gimmicky song, but the beat is unmistakable.
How I Could Just Kill a Man - Cypress Hill
Playaz Club - Rappin 4-Tay

All the others I can think of are already one here.

I'd have to put Award Tour above Electric Relaxation.

Juicy?

I mean, 3/4 people...not just hip-hop fans, probably know this song word for word.

Plus, with Juicy, I feel like you can't put it on the list since the beat is barely different from the song it's sampled from.
