From what I was taught, It is basically a man's "panty line." Shouldn't be able able to see a man's undershirt when he has a dress shirt on.
A t-shirt should go under the dress shirt. Plus it decreases the chancs of sweat being shown through your shirt if you are a sweater.

Not a whole lot, but I'm not sure if that's because I've been doing it so long that I'm used to it or what.
But, when I do, I just hate sweating directly on my main shirts. It's to the point now that I don't feel very normal with less than 3 layers on
