NFL Discussion Thread: Pats win SB XLIX. Offseason begins

Seeing Kuechly and Lavonte as #1 and #2 in tackles once again kinda angers me a lil bit knowing we could have had both of them on our team right now but instead opted for ******* Mark Barron.

I think it's odd the Patriots are 10.5 point favorites tomorrow night. That's a pretty big spread, regardless of the Jets as of late.

“@ChrisBurke_SI: 12 snaps for C.J. Spiller yesterday. Sure feels like he's being phased out in Buffalo.”

Can anyone explain what the hell the bills are doing?

You bring in a college guy.. You have a ton of speedy WRs.. You have cj and fred at RB.. Why aren't they just spreading teams out with watkins, woods and Goodwin.. Let woods and Goodwin use their speed and run deeper routes forcing the safeties into deep coverag.. Work Sammy all over the route tree and from different spots..

Hell lineup both cj and fred in the backfeild.. Both can catch passes.. Force defenses to account for both

Theoretically, it's all nice, but they haven't had a quarterback. As sad as it is, Orton is an upgrade, but he still needs to get into harmony with all those weapons.

Bills probably pursue Cousins or Hoyer next offseason.

^ I mean it doesn't even seem like they are using the spread just as a tool for the running game like a ton of colleges are doing now..

Agreed, way too big for an inter-division game especially on a Thursday night not named Vikings at Packers.

extremely odd. short week for both teams, pats dealing with significant injuries, jets likely will look to run to slow the game down. and factor in that its jets and pats...and everything points to a tight game. surprised the line hasnt moved.

Report: Jets Almost Took Tom Brady In Sixth Round Of 2000 NFL Draft
by Darren Hartwell
Wed, Oct 15, 2014 at 8:15PM

It’s the end of the 2013 regular season, and the New York Jets have just clinched their 13th AFC East title in 15 years thanks to superstar quarterback Tom Brady, whose eventual retirement send-off could rival that of fellow New York legend Derek Jeter. OK, New England Patriots fans, you can awake from your nightmare now. But according to a report, Tom Brady in Green and White wasn’t too much of a stretch. The Jets had already taken quarterback Chad Pennington with the 18th overall pick in the 2000 NFL draft. But as Gary Myers of the New York Daily News reports, one team scout was very high on a certain University of Michigan quarterback who was still on the board as the draft entered the sixth round. Myers, citing a source who was in the Jets’ draft room, wrote that the scout “had such a conviction on (Brady) he nearly stood on a table shouting his name to general manager Bill Parcells.” The scout failed to convince Parcells to take Brady, and New York selected defensive back Tony Scott with the 179th overall pick. Brady was still available twenty picks later, and the rest is history. Scott went on to play a grand total of 23 games in the NFL, including, ironically enough, a brief stint in New England. Brady, thanks once again to Mo Lewis and the Jets, took over for Drew Bledsoe in 2001 and developed into the one of the most prolific quarterbacks in NFL history. We’ll give Parcells the benefit of the doubt for passing on Brady, since he’d already taken Pennington three rounds earlier. Still, as the Patriots get set to welcome the Jets on Thursday night, it’s hard not to think of what could have been.

Manuel and Orton, enough said

Or Giants/'Skins, Bucs/Falcons and Ravens/Steelers. Books playing the trend here and lots of people backed the Jets early (myself included), but you can't handicap vs. Untimely -- and way too many -- turnovers and lackadaisical effort. Patriots are covering.

I'm just saying for having hired a guy just out of college.. They've learned not to make offenses so reliant upon having a good QB, hell even having a decent one

Look at what urban Meyer has done in Florida and osu.. Or now Gus Malmazh now with auburn.. Even with you spreading out defenses with the WRs.. You're still going run heavy.. Then use tempo to make the reads easier since it forces teams hands a lil bit, just constantly motion a guy to see if it's zone or what.. Then you can run read options and screens.. Use the speedy WRs on jet sweeps and reverses and stuff

NFL is not NCAA

NFL is not NCAA

Nfl has been stealing from the ncaa for years.. Belichick went to see chip while he was at oregon to learn from him..

Peyton runs the read option too, he just throws off of it (also runs tempo and other things done in college to force the defenses hand).. Then you have had college guys who have come in and found success

A good play is a good play.. Who cares where it comes from.. It's all strategy

I have no idea if this is common knowledge or not, I've just recently started looking into betting on games as I've had urges to dabble. So from someone who knew nothing other than the concept of a spread, I just learned that the odds-makers don't make spreads based on what they think will happen but make it so they get an even amount of bets on each side in order to make the most money themselves. Often times when it's a team with a popular fan base they inflate the spread in their favor so more money comes in on that side. Which I think is a category we could put the Jets under.

I think that concept has become more known the past few years as more and more shows do picks vs the spreads and have odds makers on their show

Its supposed to start raining at 3 so at the very least it will be wet conditions

Now Hearing conflicting reports about whether or not it will be raining at kick off
