OFFICIAL FIBA World Cup Spain 2014 Thread

Probably a good sign for D-Rose's health that they don't seem to be holding him back. He's in the game with a 57pt lead and 2 mins left

Finland was a wildcard.

Spain's roster is good.

Rubio, Calderon, Fernandez, the Gasol Brothers, Ibaka

Surprised Mirotic isn't on the roster.

If Spain had a guard that could play like Ginobili...

Just caught the Philippines-Croatia replay. If filipinos are going to recruit American players, they might as well recruit a coach.:ahem:: Spoelstra ::ahem:: )

God knows they need it. You have an nba big man on your team and you don't know how to use him at all :smh:

Voach chot brought gilas to fiba wolrd cup before blatche inserted into the line up. Rajo failed to do that.

It's actually not surprising. The simple explanation is that Mirotic is a naturalized citizen (he's originally from Montenegro). FIBA only allows one naturalized citizen per national team. Serge Ibaka takes up that roster spot now.

But it goes much deeper than that. Mirotic was primed to make the leap to the national team in 2012 for the Olympics, but Spain expedited Ibaka's citizenship and chose him over Mirotic. Mirotic was angry (and rightfully so) because he'd been groomed in the national program and killed it on the U-20 team, had lived in Spain for many years (compared to Ibaka only playing professionally for a couple years). Ever since Ibaka joined the team, the Spanish federation has basically ignored Mirotic. For those reasons alone (and as long as Ibaka is around) you'll never see Mirotic on the Spanish team.

Edit: I should clarify that I'm not saying Spain should have chosen Mirotic over Ibaka. I'm just explaining why Mirotic isn't on the team.

Examples of American coaches making an impact: Coach Cal made DR a better team (I know he's not there anymore, but he left the program in good hands). Mike Fratello has transformed Ukraine.

I think basketball overseas still need time to develop outside of Spain. Some of these countries have 1 or 2 solid guys in the NBA but that will have little to no impact when the other 3-4 starters and bench players are struggling.

Sometimes its all down to luck and development too for these counties. Just gotta hope for a golden generation they can groom and compete with the US.

It's kind of hard to start development at a young age for most of these countries. The interest in basketball might be growing, but not enough kids in these countries actually grow up believing they could make it one day playing basketball, especially in the NBA. I think as more international players make it to the NBA and more talent gets infused into the other international leagues making them bigger products then maybe there would be more devotion and dedication towards basketball.

^ Thanks for the clarification.

It'll be super awkward if Mirotic becomes a good nba player down the line

Spain 4 years from now : "Congratulations, you have your spot back on Spain's national team."

Mirotic: " "

Honestly, if I'm Spain, I would've stayed with Mirotic just because you already have two other bigs (The Gasol Brothers). The international game isn't the kind of game where you bang down low. You don't need three traditional bigs on the floor at the same time. At the most, 2 bigs is enough and everyone else plays outside. But more commonly, you'll see 1 inside and 4 outside in FIBA ball. Everyone plays "small" and spaces the floor which is where Mirotic would've excelled. Traditional bigs aren't made for FIBA, just ask Duncan, who so famously said, "**** Fiba."

I see Spain eventually turning into Argentina of the last six-eight years. Slowly falling off and not being able to infuse the team with enough fresh talent to sustain a high level of play. Pau, Calderon and Navarro are probably done after this tourney. Marc will have to carry more of the load in 2016 and 2019 (not to mention whatever Eurobasket tourneys he plays in). I admit I'm not familiar with what's in the pipeline for Spain right now, but this current group has been together for awhile, so I just don't know who is going to plug the gaps over the next two-five years.

They just can't reload like Team USA. Nobody can.

Believe me, this is one reason why I want to see Mirotic flourish. Just for the awkwardness it'll create for Spain later on.

Ibaka is hardly a "traditional" big. Does most of his offensive work on jump shots, has been adding a 3pt shot to his game and doesn't really post up.

Spain should be fine. Rubio, Ibaka, Marc Gasol are all younger than 30. That's a really good core.

I watched a lot of Spain vs Iran, is there any reason Ibaka didn't play?

There's no way he can just not be in the rotation...
