Wish I had repkied last night but the PSN store did in fact tell me it detected disc content already on system and to delete that and then download the digital one. Just kicked it off around 12:10 and went to sleep lol

FYI, artwork on discs are both different. I looked at them last night. It might "look" the same to the average eye but when you put them next to eachother its a different section of the map on the background. I'm sure if you a scheming fool you could put the old one in the box and try to trade it in. Eventually some dumb retail associate who doesn't care will just approve it.
Ink is much darker on the TTK disc also. I dunno if this is an after effect of Vanilla Destiny being in my PS4 for a year straight or not.

I wonder if both disks have the same content tho, as I do plan on trading in the TTK disk, but I need to verify that all I need is my codes or the disk to access the new content.

I'm trying to find out myself. My homey was playing this am I am trying to see if he can play everything with Year 1 disc. He said TTK was a small update and everything opened up for him.

I would advise you guys to check that thoroughly. You don't want to install TTK update, and then try to use the vanilla disc only for it to come up with an error about it looking for some reference code or something of the sorts that is exclusively on these new discs.

If you are using the same account from before, then those characters are still going to be there for you to use.
Not sure what you mean by the expansion vs. stand alone part. You cannot play any game without the disc, unless you have the digital download. Also, if/when you buy this new DLC, you will get a Destiny disc with it that you will be using to play the game, again, unless you have the digital download so then you won't have a disc.

eh sorry. i meant stand alone as in is the taken king its own game or just an expansion pack of the originaly destiny?
im mainly asking, if i traded in my destiny game, and possibly deleted its data, can i go buy the taken king, pop in the disk and play?

I believe so. I think this is what Quad and them are trying to confirm now. There was a large update last week before TTK dropped, and then another smaller one this week. Guessing most of it was downloaded last week and then TTK and the small update just confirms and unlocks the new stuff for us. When you buy TTK, the disc you get would have everything on it that you need to play. Even if you deleted the data off the PS4, you should still have your previous characters saved off onto Bungie's cloud and tied to your account. They should be there when you log in.
I believe they also were giving everyone a boost token for one character. So you would go straight to level 25 and could play the new content starting. It just would suck because the previous weapons and story missions that you did, you would have to do again I am guessing.
