Selma MLK Film Starring David Oyelowo, Cuba Gooding Jr., Oprah Winfrey, Common RD: 1/9/15

Was plesantly surprised with this film.

Went into it thinking I was going to see a typical black oppression film, but instead got a film that arguably went knee deep into selma in the 60's. Really good performances all around. Dude who was acting as King in the film was incredible. Captivating even.

That scene where the old guy was crying to King as they were looking at his dead son, that **** got to me :frown:

Never forget that the purpose of every movie is to make money. Dramatic license will be used if it results in broadening the appeal of the film and increasing the ROI. It's ALWAYS about the money.

It bothered me that this reminded me of Ferguson, especially the tear gas part.

I'm also over watching slavery/civil rights movies because it gets me in my feels to see what my people (grandparents) went through not that it's outplayed or anything

I enjoyed the movie but I didn't really view him as MLK Jr

This, he did not have a strong MLK vibe to me.

I will get this film on Blu-Ray.

It's not necessarily the re-hashing of African Americans dark past in America... It's that it seems like that's all black movies are about. Why can't we have black blockbuster drama, superhero, action or comedies? Well, comedies we do have downpat. But what about a Black horror blockbuster/major release. Slave this, activist that. Man that stuff is tiring to see. Black people are just as, if not more talented than any other ethnic group. Let's use our talent to display a variety of aspects.

See they painted Macolm with that militant vibe heavy in this. I'm really good on not supporting. I'll support AWAKE tho for their electronical efforts

Malcolm was in the movie for 10 minutes at the most. It was after he left NoI and he met with Coretta. He wasn't militant, but instead a man who had reached a new understanding on his life.

I'm so confused on people criticizing a movie that haven't seen.

cause we seen the premise of this movie time and time again.... it would be like reading 10+ books/autobiographies of the same person...

Its only but so many ways you can tell the same damn story over and over again...especially when you confine and limit the material and put certain restraints and limitations on said story and only address/speak from one perspective and touch on specific aspect and never deviate from it.

Itll be like making ten movies about michael jordan from the championship bulls days from a player/team perspective.... and only from that perspective and only from that time period....At some point your like ok either show his home life/family life... life outside of bball.... behind the scenes...practices, another time period.... from another angle something...

exactly thats why i say the blackplotation period and the 90's was the best era/time fro blacks for many reasons but especially in media and music..,,,

you had everything from blankman to above the rim, to boyz n the hood to posse to vampire in brooklyn to jasons lyrics...even musically wu tang to icfe cube and nwa to luke skywalker to nas to geto boyz to spice1 to bone thugs.... variations and differences....

Now its either a white man saved me movie... the blockbuster in which the aa is a sidekick.... the politically correct required 1 black person... or the cool side kick aka the "keep it real" talk to the hand sassy black woman.

And when an all black cast is present its ALWAYS a comedy... full of typical stereotypes. ala tyler perry...

American sniper good movie.....but there could easily be a black version aka cripus attucks..... for example...

The problem tbh is vast majority of aa are ignorant and stereotype themselves and cant imagine themselves in any other light but the perspective they have been pigeon holed in...and in this day in age have accepted, and now stand tall and proud of....

gravity couldve been done with blacks aka ronald mcnair and mae johnson... The story fits with what actually happened to them and it is a true story for them....

Thing is todays blacks would be on some what a n' in space lol yea right.... black ppl dont go to space, they club drank, have house parties, family reunions, and go to church on sunday... and anything outside of that aint black or utterly ridiculous

zoro who was a real person...a black man matter fact. if they were to make a true version of it... black folks so complacent and small minded thinking, that if it were to come out, most blacks would reject/dismiss it on some aint no black man riding a horse, he aint wearing no costume get up like that.... or even worst.... zoro aint black, lone ranger wasnt black...this movie is stupid he suppose to be white.

aka kinda how blacks were when black santa clauses first stepped on the scene, like this is stupid....everyone knows santa is white.

Serious question.

Did Coretta have a thing for Malcolm? MLK seem like he hinted at it during the jail scene.

Outside of X, I can't think of a black civil rights movie that treated its subjects as the diverse, brilliant, and flawed people they are/were as this movie did. There are no saints, just people fighting for freedom and diginity. These events took place 50 years ago. A time when thecpolice could wantonly kill an unarmed black man and not face any punishment. Oh wait......

We are the only people constantly running from our past.

not true but lol i know what you mean.... blacks run from their past in terms of the prominence, significant, contribution, positive aspects of their past... and there origins and heritage,

But past as far as the demoralizing aspects, the well call it is what it is faith based usery aspects, the suffrage, the down trodden and stalemate, stigmas and hindering aspect the run towards it and wear it as a badge of pride
