Age of your basketball decline?

I'm around the game a lot so I'm adding new things to my game to make up for the inevitable.

I always want to be able to compete.

The thread is ******* depressing man, hopefully you guys surpass your expectations. I for one will start practicing on my midrange, quickness, and dribbling a bit. I refuse to push myself too hard though, hesitant to get injured now since I have my own life to maintain.

I'm 29 and I can still jump and dunk, still fast like I used to be but my handles are suspect at the momen. That muscle memory is gone because I don't play every day.I think it helps that I have been lifting weights seriously for the last 2 years.

Personally I can really tell a decline in the recovery process. If I don't get a good night rest, sit in an ice tube for 20 minutes, wear a lunarlon shoe (Hyperdunks, Kobe 8 or 9) I am really feeling it the next day. Also, what is gone for me is the days of just walking in the gym and playing. It's the jumprope and a couple of laps and stretching before I hit the floor. And if I lose and have to wait more than one game I'm done, or go to the track or weightroom. Too old to sit around a wait a few games to get back on again. I use to be against Iverson when he said I'm too old to come of the bench, by having to get loose and play for a few minutes and come back to the bench and wait to play again. I now fully understand where he was coming from.

Playing wise I still feel good because I play daily, but the layoff during the holidays had me out of it, being yesterday was the first time I played in 3 weeks. Around my way during the holidays you can't find a game anywhere....

yeah it sucks.... i remember playing for hours when i was younger and id be really sore right after but as soon as i woke up in the morning all the aches and pains would be gone.... now it lingers for days sometimes and im in good shape .... , i was running 5 miles a day minimum for awhile now but i feel my body telling me to relax so i started just running for an hour every other day...

i just played some pickup last night and today my knees are flaring up my thighs are sore .
only thing i take for the pain is trees and it doesnt help much....

Yeah basketball is hard on the joints. We have guys on my soccer team (adult league) who are 33-37 and still playing decently. Not as fast as they used to be but can still be mobile

I find the most frustrating thing now is how smart I am - I can see things and I know what to do but my old bones can't do them. I can shoot the same but my stamina isn't there so after a while it just runs out.

Im 31 now and Im just as good/athletic as I was when I was 21....

The difference I play a lot more now.  Im more serious about fitness and nutrition now I guess since Im older now, or maybe because they opened a gym next door to me.

Honestly the biggest thing is staying sharp.  Even if I can get time to hit some jumpers and dribble a bit for like 15 minutes, it keeps that muscle memory intact.

That's interesting. I often wonder about that. It would be interesting to have 6 months of no work and stuff to see if I could get it back. I don't know if it's the mileage or just lack of time that is the difference - but I suspect the latter and you're probably testament to that.

In HS I played all the time. It was easy to play a few hours a day and lift or run in the evening.

Then College I was down to a few days a week, then work, then kids... I'd love to have the time but there aren't the hours in the day.

I need something like a 24 hour gym around here. I'd go late at night.

Basically

The gym opened right across the street, so I just go there before work, or late night or whatever.

Its all about keeping yourself in shape to me thats the biggest part.  Ur body is like a car, if you got years and mileage on it, you cant just hop in and go (unless toyota or honda)  you gotta maintain it, even warm it up sometimes.  Its still gonna ride well if you properly maintain it.

To the OP, After playing thousands of hours of basketball in your life, you have the basic muscle memory. Keep playing and practicing and your skills will be just as sharp as they ever were. As far the conditioning and athleticism aspect is concerned, after the age of 25 or so, you have to be disciplined in order to stay quick and in order to maintain your stamina.

Also, being even a little bit overweight is terrible for athletic performance and quality of life after 25. When I was 22, I drank my way to being 30 lbs overweight but I played through it, I did not feel any extra soreness in my joints and I lost those 30 lbs by the time I turned 23. From 25 to 28, I did not over eat or drink often but i just gradually got to be 50 lbs overweight and it slowed me down, it put a hurt on my joints and back and generally sapped my energy. I spent the last two years losing that weight and at 30, I feel great.

One more thing, even if you play regularly and you are in shape and you are not overweight, you need to warmup, stretch and ice yourself down (at minimum, mix in some cold baths and showers after playing ball). In your late 20's and onward, you just have to take a number of measure in order to avoid soreness.

This is exactly how I feel. Being 29, I have knee pain now and I'm not as agile as I used to be lol. Sucks.

24 or so. Last time I dunked I was 25, I'm 30 now. I've always had that Cp3/Pierce/Melo physique where I was around 15% body fat but played so much ball and was so athletic in spite of it. Enter the real world, 40hr work weeks, other adult responsibilities and I began playing less and less, at this point it has been over 2 months since I hooped, I just be ready to take a nap soon as I hit home from work, plus I packed on mad LBs. I can still play though, it's just a floor bound, more cerebral, less athletic type of game.

28....6'2 245. I still have the skills as I usually had throughout my 20's (shooter, low post banger/cleanup), but my body has started to fail me. The day after I'm limping out the bed with Achilles tendinosis.

I actually partially tore my Achilles last summer playing rugby and since then I can feel the decline in athleticism and it sucks :frown: :frown:

ACL tear, and multiple knee sprains of basically rendered me bound to the ground.

I can still shoot, through and post up so Im good in 1 on 1 or 3 on 3 half court, but full court? My knees just can't take it. :smh:

25 definitely isn't the decline for me, I feel like I'm peaking . Recovering from a pretty bad groin pull though right now and it's taking forever. :frown: maybe you start to heal slower.

19 after i got in a car accident and using my left arm just causes pain
mean.gif
had the middle eastern game perfect before that, 3s and D and lots of arguing.. god i miss those days

0 pts, 0 assists, 0 boards in my winter league debut. Two airballs, as well.
You serious my dude?  Ouch.  You visibly exited your prime in men's winter league.  Haha ... not even one dime, or rebound?  What about a foul?  Please tell me you existed on the stat sheet somewhere.

DC where you playing at??

I'm 30 and I feel like I'm still nice. The old man craft is taking over for the declining athleticism, but I'm still more athletic than the average joes at the rec
Word

I just turned 30 late December, and 6ft even. I played college ball and I actually think I'm better. I'm athletically not the same as I was at 19-22 but hell I had a strength and condition coach. I can still punch it on the break and finish in traffic. Way more smarter and efficient with the movement now. Can't lie I do feel it more now after more then 4 games. But I've yet to feel like I can't get to any spot I want to on the court.

Starting a 3 month training regiment to drop back to my ideal weight by june 1st... february to june will be training camp for me... gonna play hard this summer like its my last

Im 29. Weak handles, good passer, deadly midrange and 3. Defense is great when I have energy ( i take plays off)
Didnt get to this point til I was 25. Beforre I had limitless energy. Quick first step n played elite lockdown defense. Ball for 10 hrs, walk to wifey house, bone her 2-3 times and walk 2 miles home. DEm days dun.

We should just have a summit at a senior center, and strait ball on them ******.
Problem solved

I'm 28. Used to be able to dunk and had decent handles in high school. Lost all of it by age 23 :smh:

Jumper is still wet as **** though :smokin
