Is there anything better than chromecast?

I have a Best Buy gift card. I have all Apple products (if that really matters) I did some research and many tech sites are saying Roku 3 is a better cop than the Apple TV. I don't have Amazon Prime nor really care to listen to Pandora or other music apps on my tv. Looking for quick advice, should I just settle for the Apple TV?

So when using the chromecast you have to have the netlix or hbo app open on a tablet or phone? Is it possible to have those apps on the chromecast like the apple tv has?

No, it doesn't have its own stand on service. You have to use your tablet, phone or computer.

I resurrected a post rather than making a new thread. Hopefully people can shed some light on things as I am trying to get a new streaming box but just not sure which one. Here are my requirements that I'd like.

I have two 3 TB harddrives with movies connected to my iMac and I am currently using my PS3 as a media hub and streaming movies on it. The reason why I want a new streaming box is because my PS3 fan is way too loud and I want something way more quieter. Also I want to use a streaming app as well like Plex and that is something that the PS3 doesn't offer. So the new Apple TV just came out as well as the Roku 4 and both have it's pros and cons. Since I am in the Apple ecosystem, it would seem logical to get an Apple TV but since I am mostly streaming bootleg movies, I can only use Airplay to mirror something from my Mac to my TV. Roku 4 or even the 3 seems nice and has Plex to boot which I really want to use. Plus I can use the Roku straight without always having to Airplay things from my Mac to the TV but things like running music or even pics could be difficult since I have all that on Apple applications.

So given, what do you guys suggest I get considering what I am doing?

Love my nexus player, bought 2 fire sticks on "prime day" and I wasn't happy. Totally recommend the nexus player. Especially with Kodi

I did the same thing as you streaming through the PS3. But since getting a PS4, my brother-in-law gave us a Roku and I simply connect the HD to the Roku and watch through there.

I, too, would love the simplicity of streaming through Plex, but I just decided to deal with connecting/disconnecting the HD from my iMac to the Roku when loading new movies.

There's a lot of options out there, cheapest one would be the streaming sticks (chromecast, fire stick, roku) and they are all compatible with plex. Idk how good your network setup is or how far your router is compared to your TVs.

Crashing how many streaming devices are out there. I pretty much have them all. Apple TV, chromecast, Roku Stick and Fire Stick. I would say best way to get all the movies and tv shows with (Kodi) is get a hacked fire TV stick. You can hack it yourself or buy it on eBay for like 80 ish.

^^^^^^I read Firestick has lag though. I honestly wouldn't need a hacked Firestick just cause I download a lot of movies and just like to have my own Netflix library for the future. My PS3 is practically perfect aside from the interface of Plex and the fan. I had some lag at first though but I connected a cable line to it, and seems fine. I hate Cinavia on the PS3 though which mutes some movies. I heard that doesn't happen on the Roku and Apple TV.

I live in a studio so everything is relatively close. My router is next to my TV and the PS3 is hooked to it on a hard line. My iMac is literally 10 feet away on my desk but I run it wirelessly. I heard those streaming sticks have lag though. As stated above, I had lag a lot on my PS3 (most movies I have are 1080p but 4GB files) but it went away after I connected a hard line to it. My mind is set on a Roku 3 or 4 or new Apple TV.

You guys think Plex will be on Apple TV since they are opening it up for developers to make apps now?

If you can, hardwire is the way to go. WiFi can bee good but there's a lot of different factors that come into play with streaming media on wifi.

Buy the new Chromecast (which is great BTW) and run everything from Plex using your phone or tablet. Why burn out your Ps3 or other consoles when you can run everything from a phone or tablet?

I have 3 chromecasts in my apartment and run my Plex server via hardwire to my router. I cast everything at 10 MBPS quality and have 0 issues with lag. My down/up is 300mbps down and 50mbps up.

Hope that helps.
