Who here generously does not listen to or cares for J. Cole

lol. Since when has being conscious equated to record sales. How many platinum albums have common, kweli, mos had. Conscious rap doesn't sell. If ur trying to sell records the last thing u would do be conscious. If we was trying to sell records he would do chick songs like wale, drake, big sean... As far as calling women ******* who doesn't? Common does, tupac did. That doesn't dilute their message. Tupac did songs like "i get around" and "temptation" then turned around and did "Dear momma" and" Brenda's got a baby". If you don't like his music or think it's boring that's one thing but for u to sit here and act like him visiting ferguson was for show is ridiculous. Where was all the other rappers, athletes... during the ferguson riots.

Common and Kweli will never do anything for attention. Cole did that's the difference. The Ferguson visit showed he was trying to connect himself with the situation for attention. Why did he take a picture just standing where Michael Brown was killed? Shouldn't he have kept all that private? Cole is in the mainstream right now so there's no need for him to make himself look like Malcolm X. I wasn't saying calling women ***** wasn't conscious. The biggest problem with Cole is that he plays up the volatile stereotypes about black people while trying to convince the masses that he's smarter and different than everyone else. You may even hear a gun line from him once in a while so I don't get why people think he's a different breed of rapper.

Common made my favorite rap album of all time Be. Cole could never make something as heartfelt and real as that album cause he's too full of ****. He should of never positioned himself as a savior for 'real people'.

I have the exact same sentiments towards Cole as you.  Enjoyed the warm up and knew he had potential, but nothing has really moved me after that.  Although I will say his new album is better than anything after the warm up.  He's not bad, but his music is just boring.  He's really good at making mediocre music, if you get what I'm saying.  The guy just really knows how to connect with his fans, that's where the hype comes from.
All of this, and I think he switched his style up to cater to his main audience, the ladies.  So you know how that go...

Come on bruh. Why u so mad? What black stereotypes does he perpetuate. This dude never sold drugs or was in a gang in fact he graduated from st. johns University. Why do u hate him so much. Dudes talks about his mom struggle with addiction and growing up bi-racial. U have no proof that he's disingenuous. People were taking pictures of him  in ferguson because he's a celebrity he wasn't posing next to where mike brown was killed taking selfies.  Kweli was doing interviews left and right on every network. If you think he's doing this to prove he's smarter than everybody else u got some serious insecurity issues bro.

Everything that you labeled as great about him has been done in 90's. He's not unique in any way. All mainstream hip hop artists these days have some type of unique personality. Gambino, Drake, K. Dot etc. His basic and boring personality bothers me a great deal. Be good and have your little fan base but when he sells a million I gotta question how so many people fell for his marketing scheme. I blame the current state of hip hop for this cause outside of 3 rappers the new school is pretty much trash. Logic is in the same exact league as this dude which is why I would never give him a chance. Just boring and nothing going for him.

This post on reddit sums up his entire career. Please read it and educate yourself on why his image is manufactured.

You sound crazy saying he went to Ferguson for attention. Everything he's said and done regarding Ferguson and all the other race issues going on looks sincere. Is he supposed to be a house _ like so many other entertainers and just go with the program? I don't think he's tryna be Malcolm X. It's a black man that has a voice and he used it. I don't see how you can knock that unless you just a hating *** dude lol.

It seemed sincere but it was all for attention. If he didn't drop an album soon after maybe I could buy that argument but that's not the case. You ever think maybe other artists don't wanna be on that fake activist tip like Cole? The whole situation was a fraud anyways I'm glad Kendrick called out people for their hypocrisy. Calling out Iggy and Macklemore pretty much confirmed he wanted to take advantage of the racial unrest at the tail end of 2014.

Also dude is biracial so chill with trying to claim him as a black man.

We know he's biracial but he identifies himself as a black man. Not even gonna go back and forth with you, you basically admitted that your mad cuz he sold a lot of records so everything else you saying holds no weight.

How do you figure Coles concern was fake when he's been touching on those subjects for years? It seems like you're just hating.

And if the cops see or ask for a description of him, he's going to be seen as a black man, that's all that really matters.

He isn't the first rapper to speak on police brutality. It's clear he saw the limelight was on Ferguson and decided to cash in. No hate over here just facts.

I'm not mad at his record sells fam. Cole is drenched in mediocrity and the public thinks he's better than he is that's all. He could Identify as a black man but he looks damn near Dominican to me so he should stop false claiming. I could care less about his record sells since it took him till his 3rd album to reach platinum. That's embarrassing.

Huh? Platinum albums is now the measuring stick for non mediocrity? You do realize none of these new ***** besides Drake, Nicki, and Kendrick have plaques right? Hell Rozay ain't even got a platinum plaque.

Cole is a great artist. He's not going to hit you with a bunch of club tracks or bangers, that's not his lane. He's just gonna spit that real and remain true to himself and the type of music he likes to make. It's cool if it ain't your cup of tea but to say he's mediocre is a huge stretch.

 He's false claiming that he's black because he's not fully black? I guess Malcolm X was false claiming too because he wasn't fully black either?

You said he looks Dominican, but you know there are black Dominicans, right? Plus you also know black people don't all come in one shade?

Log off dude. You sound absolutely foolish right now.

With those artists you mentioned there's actually an argument to be made on why they sell so many records. Drake is a hit maker and is the voice of our generation. Kendrick is a unique MC with his own style and Nicki got the girls and is a straight up pop star. With Cole there is no other reason he sells other than just being a carbon copy real rapper to the masses. "Cole is great artist" That's one of the most most funniest and outrageous statements Ive seen on here. You know you don't believe that come on.

Cole is half white and he doesn't look fully black. There are black Dominicans but he doesn't look black to me, he could go there and be called a Mulatto straight up. Malcolm X wasn't biracial he was fully black. Were talking about 2015 and Cole want's to be accepted with black people.

I mean it's subjective bruh. To say another man's opinion is outrageous is outrageous in itself. I think he has tremendous talent and makes great music. Is his music the MOST entertaining? Probably not but there are a lot of great artists who don't necessarily make you want to shuck and jive and bob your head. There are also equally as many artist who are entertaining but point blank suck. Different strokes for different folks.

I just don't see how people can listen to his words and call him boring though.

He does have the choice to claim biracial. I heard him say something like a cop isn't gonna tell the difference when he pulls me over. As if he doesn't have any light skin privilege :rolleyes. Black people love claiming biracial people we've done that since the days of slavery. So no wonder he got paraded as some type of hero to blacks.

I feel like the majority of people who aren't his stans agree with me though. Who really get excited listening to this guys music? It's all marketing let's be honest about it.

There are a fair amount of rappers that aren't of the "shuck and jive" variety that make far more entertaining music than Cole. His words are redundant and unoriginal, especially in the conscience rap sphere. Charles Hamilton had the same lane and made more listenable music before his fall off. And De La Soul set the bar far too high for average man raps for me to settle with Cole fake singing. The early 2000's were full of dudes that were in the same lane and put out work better than any project Cole has put out.

whoa the HATE is strong with "Nom De Guerre"

Let that hate go man... the foundation its rooted in is so flawed.

I'm doing this for all the MC's better than Cole that never got the shine he did. I don't hate this man.

You seem to be one of the better speakers on race on this forum. I'm surprised you would feel this way since we all know colorism is a real issue.

Black people love "claiming" bi-racial people?

Really?

Do you know the history behind how race was even constructed in the first place? We didn't create that ****. Back when we weren't considered human...a drop of black blood placed you in that "not a human" category.

And WE'RE the ones "claiming" a group of people.

Colorism is an issue. Only because we're still living within barriers given to us. The light skin/dark skin divide was a willie lynch tactic...and we're still operating under that. So to say black people "claim" bi-racial people is nonsense. They ARE black people...and we didn't set the construct for that.

Yes we absolutely do loving claiming mixed people when it suits us. When a biracial person ends getting the role of an African American we freak out and get mad like the Zendya/Aalliyah movie. Then we get all angry claiming that biracial are stealing our movie roles and spots in the media. The hypocrisy is deafening.

We only like to claim biracial people when THEY claim us. Guys like J cole is a prime example of this cause if he was dating a white girl and never spoke as if he dealt with the true black experience I'm sure most of us would call him biracial and claim he wasn't fully black. Especially his black female fans. Obama is the first biracial president not the first black president Cole even said that himself. Cole is biracial and doesn't look fully black but that doesn't matter cause black people love claiming biracials who claim them It's the truth.

Obviously we didn't invent the 1 drop rule or colorism. It's still sad how many black people worship people who are just as much white as they are black.
