Kendrick Lamar IS The GREATEST Rapper Of All Time (Vol. Hear Me Out. LOOOONG read)

So since nobody has brought fourth a informed reason why Kendrick is NOT the GOAT, can we agree that he is?

The majority of people base their GREATEST on someone else's opinion.

Then you have the "disagree with the crowd guy", but what if the crowds right? Then what? You really gonna take the 4th grade route. Or nah?

This isn't a fav. Rapper thread. Kendrick ain't my fav, and at age 30 I don't see me switching my allegiance from Nasir Olu Dara Jones.

That is one problem people have when talking about rappers. Who they think is the best and who is their favorite. For example, Cam'ron is in my top 5. He's one of my favorites but I know he's not a top 5 skilled rapper. BIG is a better rapper but he's not in my top 5.

As for Kendrick, I think out of our current rappers under the age of 35. He's without a doubt the best one but I can't call him the GOAT off of two albums. Two phenomenal albums but there's so many other rappers I grew up on that made albums I still play 15-20 years later.

I think Kendrick is easily the best rapper today, Lupe is right behind him.

Kendrick’s prime has ALREADY surpassed those of Biggie, 2Pac, Rakim, G Rap, Slick Rick, LL and Ice Cube. If he was to stop rapping RIGHT now, his catalog could go song for song with ANYone from a QUALITY stand point
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...NO!

This is an Apples and Oranges convo, yall just killing time, wasting data......

Why are we limiting the argument to just albums tho? When it's clear that mixtapes now play a huge part in an artist's overall development. Why not look at the entire catalog?

And furthermore, why are we clinging to albums that came out 20+ years ago to make the claim that we have to "wait and see" in order to crown somebody? I guess it's all subjective, but the game has changed and there's been better, more rounded hip hop artists in the last few years than ever before. I think as hip hop fans we have to give up this "caveman" mentality when it comes to these younger artists and stop holding guys we've been listening to for years above them, just because they've done it longer.

Like somebody said in this thread already, it seems like Kendrick has to die in order to get that level of respect. And that's just not fair.

Still have yet to see the most memorable verses in Kendrick's career be posted.

What will be reciting years from now? What verse will everyone know or be looked at silly for not knowing?

And boom the "this generation" talk begins

Ya'll realize people of the previous generation have been ******** on the current generation's music for at least 100 years?

Kendrick is definitely the best rapper out right now...

But am I ready to put him above Pac? Nah not yet.

Pac's lyrics just mean to much to me.

And I thought I was the only one that felt like Kendrick's flow was EM like.

Also I agree that Cole doesn't have a classic album. But that's only because FHD hasn't been out long enough yet IMO. But it's definitely a album I can see myself listening to for years.

I don't think FHD is all that great. There are some real throw away verses on there.

FHD is just my kind of album. Love the whole vibe of the album. But I can understand if people don't feel it. Apparently a lot of people don't even **** with Cole. Which is just amazing to me.

As far as Drake goes just to touch on the conversation that's been going on in here... When I listen to "if you're reading this it's to late" I feel like I'm listening to one of these young new dudes man. Not the guy that's supposed to have the "crown".

Especially when Cole, Krit, Kendrick are putting out the kind of music they are. I listen to that drake joint like is this dude serious? With this basic *** flow and average *** lyrics? This is the "king"! He's definitely fallen behind the rest in my eyes...

Also reading this thread I realize that the forgotten guy is Lupe. He can spit with the best of them. He just went crazy for a little while and it ****** his progression up. New album is crack tho.

Hip hop is consumed very differently now then it was when I got into it in the late 80s. As I was tellin my homegirl I was PLAYin a rappers (who shall remain nameless) album from my early childhood a few months ago and still remembered lyrics.

So who's to say a 10 year old today won't remember verses from now? Not sure anyone is in a position to say one way or the other. Did anyone in 87 know that "Paid In Full" would be what it is today, on a larger scale, no but there was those few people that just KNEW. And if many of y'all was around then I'm sure you'd be telling them how "Paid In Full" wasn't any better than whatever was hot.

But what Kendrick verses. As of now.
3rd verse to "Blacker The Berry"
Verse on "The City"
"Control"
The ENTIRE "Mortal Man" track will be remembered as one of the GREATEST displays of MCing.
"**** Your Ethnicity" is somethin special.
"HiiiPower" is a special record.
3rd verse to "Kill My Vibe Remix" has Jay Z blood all over it
He performed "Backseat Freestyle" at Toads Place in New Haven CT and the crowd rapped the entire song for him. He just enjoyed.
his verse on Pusha T "Nostalgia" will be remembered.

There's actually quite a few. And the way hip hop is, it's very short term memory driven. Kendrick has captured the hearts and minds of this generation. Something ALL great MCs have done.

But lemme put the ball back in your court.
how many Melle Mell verses are common knowledge? Outside of "The Message".
Kool G Rap?
**** to be a lil more current, even NaS, I'm a fan and grew up in the 90s so I know hundreds of NaS verses, but does the average fan?
Even 2Pac, for the amount of music he recorded how many verses are common knowledge? Not many. Ice Cube? Gza?

Realize those that can recite Caz and Melle Nell verses may not be intuned with Jay Z and Biggie verses, does that make them any less great? I remember the Flu Game, most die hard fans born after 90 Prolly don't, doesn't that make them any less of fans of the sport?

And time is only progressing so as those of us that can still remember Rakim and KRS verses get older, a new generation that remembers Drake and Kendrick verses is moving in. Luckily for me I'm old enuff to remember the former, and still young enuff to be intuned with latter.

But what do I know.

none.

he's gonna be remembered for the dumb goofy catchphrases he comes up with

"ya bish"

"dant kill my vibe"

"f*ck DAT"

"this d*ck aint FREEEEEEEEEE"

 :smh:

Yeah him yelling"this D ain't free" was mad awkward. First time I was listening to the album I was in the car with my girl we both looked at each other like "wtf" and skipped to the next track.

As far as Jermaine, I've said before I think he could be better than Kendrick if he REALLY wanted to be...but he doesn't. FHD was cool, the concept was great but there were just way too many half assed bars or verses were I'm just like "really dude? You're better than that".

Yea, Cole will spit some fire **** and then a verse later will say something that makes you wanna turn the song off

As much as I **** with Cole I can understand the boring label that gets attached to him, he just can't bring it for a full project IMO. The closest thing I can listen to straight through is Born Sinner. He has top notch lyrical ability though, no doubt.

I'm hoping Cole lets loose completely on the next album, everything has led up to that. Until then tho, I'm ready for the joint album wit K. Dot then hopefully the Black Hippy project.

i can't believe people still believe this is coming.. this is on the route to detox status.

it's been 4 years since we heard the song on youtube and they couldn't even feed us with the mp3? disgraceful

i'm mad about it

This. I'm an admitted stan, but bar for bar, dude is one of the best lyricists rap has ever seen, period. (especially when you factor in his mixtape material) I can understand why he gets overlooked by people who really don't follow him though.

Nice write up OP

I can see where your coming from but I can't put him above Nas, Jay, Pac, etc. just yet

Ask me in another 5 or 10 years though, he has the ability to reach that level
