All Things Sports Media Thread!!

Good move for Bill. He'll have a following. I love his work and I also love the fact that he would ROUTINELY call a spade a spade and not tow the company line. Gotta respect that. Can't wait to see where he ends up because he'll really pull zero punches when it comes to being unfiltered towards some of the "talent" at ESPN.

Nothing better than seeing him on the ESPN panel w/ Magic and confusing the **** outta him with normal conversation

Forgot 30 for 30 is bills baby smh...if ESPN jacks that too :smh:

Bums didn't want to pay him his money

**** roger

could see fox sports handing him a boat load of money

between fox and NBC.. or any of these other new sports networks or whatever.. I could easily see them handing him boat load

they threw a ton of money at michelle beadle and a couple ex espn folk.. this could legit be a game changer for them

if he can bring legit content to fill time slots, they can be huge. fs1 stays showing ufc, but if they can throw in some other stuff and be competitive it can start swaying some viewers. personally, i dont watch espn other than live sporting events and some 30/30. baseball tonight has dropped, their morning and afternoon shows are a joke. only thing fox has right now is the ufc, nascar, baseball.

only thing I really watch outside of sports on espn is PTI (if I happen to get home early enough from the office).. MAYBE a 30/30 (watched the 1st set religious.. then just tailed off).. sometimes the grantland basketball hour

that's it

but I listen to the radio shows.. le batard and svp shows

Yea. I think ESPN expects him to coming crawling back like Beadle.

Except Bill has a huge following and Beadle is straight trash with no talent

Yeah...and that's the thing. Simmons doesn't need ESPN.

espn such a garbage organization. it's like a good ol boys network of soiled jockstraps

everything they touch they manage to rip the integrity out of and corrupt

power to simmons. he'll do fine without the meatheads at that network

So he's gone from grantland and 30 for 30? Damn. Those are like the best things on espn besides Papi from Highly Questionable.

Yeah...and that's the thing. Simmons doesn't need ESPN.

See I wonder about this.

I like reading, I like good long form writing about a diverse range of subjects but how profitable is that?

From what I understand Grantland is a money losing operation, but ESPN underwrites this cost because of the increased prestige and brand loyality it brings to ESPN. How many other place could afford to lose money for a boutique website?

Websites I also enjoy like Vox, The Verge, they still engadge in click bate ish articles designed to juice page views.

Grantland doesn't pump out content to generate clicks it releases like 3-4 articles a day maybe?

I don't know I really like Grantland and Simmons so hopefully another media company gives him money to create something new, becuase im just not sure you can do it as an independant.

I meant he doesn't need ESPN in that someone else will certainly scoop him up w/ the quickness (in comparison to others on the network). I don't think he'd do well independently, but he could be the face of a network due to how brilliant he is.

Vice, to me, makes a lot of sense.

Bill hasn't been writing good columns for the better part of 3 years now. Not only has his insightful writing diminished, he has been unwatchable since ESPN goofed and put him on TV. Nobody wants to hear him verbally give Brad Stevens fellatio, or use every dead air moment to bash Kobe. We get it bro, you like the Celtics. Lets be honest, Lowe has been outshining Simmons for a while. I'm sure dude diddy bopped into Connecticut like he was going to come out like a made man and got the Joe Pesci treatment in Goodfellas. Syonara

I just realized ESPN is firing Bill Simmons while building the cornball brother, uncle tom mothership, black neo conservative propaganda machine for Jason Whitlock. :x

I wonder if Zach Lowe will be next man up for ESPN? One of the best basketball minds in the business. Not sure how he'd do on TV, but he's fantastic. Same w/ Jon Abrams.

I hope he goes to HBO and does something similar to what John Oliver does but with sports.

Also just realized no more Cousin Sal. That podcast was my Monday routine during football season :smh:

he doesn't have the sense of humor to be like john oliver. he's better off just doing a real sports type show.

FOX and Yahoo have serious money and could swoop in but Yahoo has no real TV presence and FOX Sports is gasping for air. Bleacher Report and similar sites would have to promise him the moon to even get into the door. NBA TV could be an option but that limits him as he likes to get into all sports.

Remember, Turner owns Bleacher Report. He can do NBA TV easily. Problem is he's on the west coast and NBA TV is in Atlanta.

As for the ESPN entities he's attached to, they don't need him to keep churning out 30 For 30 docs. I'm not sure how much input he's even had on that lately. Also, it's very clear that ESPN wouldn't let him do certain subjects and he seemed to be a little irritated by that. Grantland is definitely going to fall apart. That's his deal and everything runs through him. All those writers are going to bail, either to the main site (Lowe, Barnwell, etc.) or to other entities. I don't see it lasting past next year.

Ultimately, this is all a good thing. A change of scenery for Bill is going to be awesome and I'm very curious to see where he lands. And, it's not going to be a new, independent site. He's definitely latching on to BR, SBNation (which is Vox), or something. He needs resources for what he likes to do.

BR is a piece of **** site that's honestly not even worth his effort. He should just do Fox, NBC or the NBA channel and call it a day.

There's already talk of a lot the Grantland staff following him.

Their publisher also quit today.

Yeah. That site is done
