Anyone ever buy a car on Craigslist? Vol. Return of the Lucky Luchiano Car Thread

somebody got me on craigslist deal i bought a car that worked fine with test drive they poured liquid glass in radiator so you could not tell the car had any problems.... had motor trouble from water pump problems i had the car a couple hours when it started acting a fool i will never buy from craigslist and do not advise this as an option to get car

certified pre owned is prolly the way to go for peace of mind. price can be negotiated im sure too no? :nerd:

I sell cars a lot on Craigslist OP it's one of my side hustles.

Go with friends

Always negotiate

If u can take the car to autozone get a free engine inspection

Meet close to a highway and try to take it on there (hit 80 see if the car shakes)

Always negotiate. It's craigslist it comes with the territory.

As a seller tho I gotta warn you. Don't bring 1000 and expect a 6000 car. At the end of the day you get what you pay for.

I got a 2000 Montero Sport I caught for dirt cheap I'm trying to get rid of now, dudes keep hitting me like "is there anything wrong with it?" Of course there is it's a. 1000 bucks what u want a Porsche smh

lololol

Im kinda torn, i got 7k, and i see 2015 base model Jettas going for 15-16500, 7k down would give me a sweet note and i can pay it off in 3yrs maybe 4 and not have to worry about maintance issues since it would be under warranty entire time i finance and still would have power train after i pay off. I could buy a car cash and the money id use for a note put it in a savings account, but im grown and dont have time for random issues happening and it taking time to fix or even buying a 7k car and having something like a ****** go bad and it costing 2-3k to fix.

Most my friends and fam are saying just buy new/used with warranty left just to avoid headaches.

Good advice especially the test drive. Also I would highly recommend you take it to a mechanic if your not the slightest bit mechanically inclined. It's always good to check under the car especially for leaks and rust. I bought 3 cars and a motorcycle on cl and always got good deals so just keep a look out.

Jettas are really ******, I have yet to meet anyone that had a jetta and say they are good cars. 7Gs is a lot of money to put down too, why not 3Gs or something.

Bought one in feb off CL. 09 civic with about 36k miles for 7 G's talked him down to 6300. Had a mechanic look at it and he said it was definitely in an accident but everything was peachy justt the brake pedal was a lil soft from the guy probably braking to hard. It seemed to good to be tru but the mechanic said it was good money despite a couple dents. I went for it and its been good ever since so far. Went through the cold *** NY winter with no problems which my man told me is a good sign.

Also make sure the title is clean and you have the proper paperwork for your dmv to change ownership

If you know cars Craigslist is full of come ups. With that said if you don't know cars you can buy some crap.

Musket is optional
Go with cash in hand and negotiate. Feel people out if they are super exited to sell it beat them up on the price. Look if they listed it in the past for less money etc. don't take people's word on anything paperwork or it didn't happen.

Bought my MX-5 off of craigslist from a dude that collects them.  Thing's a peach.  Other than having to replace the slave cylinder (cost me $20) and having to replace the coil pack after having a cylinder misfire (really common problem for MX-5s), my car has given me no grief.

If you're selective and follow the advice given in this thread, you shouldn't have a problem finding a decent car.

:pimp: I love 90's buckets. Got my roommate a dope Honda Accord off craigslist for a commuter and my 4Runner. Both under 2k and going strong.

Bought my 2005 f-150 on cl in 2008

he wanted 19K, brought it down to 15,500

Dude was either going to lose his truck or home, so i got lucky with a great price

i wouldnt buy a VW

i had one

jettas depreciate OD too

jettas are pos and the gas mileage isnt as good as they claim are you gettin the new model with the 1.8t or the 2.5 engine?

you better get cpo with platinum warranty also if you going VW

check out vwvortex before you decide to get a VW

id get a TDI jetta if anything but i doubt youre looking at that

youre better off with a camry again why the hell you want a base jetta? car will be worth the money you putting down within a 1.5 years not even

Looks like I'll steer away from car listings on CL. Contemplating on trading my VW Rabbit for maybe a  Subaru Forrester or a VW Tiguan. Good insight in here lol.

the new Gen Camrys aint the move, Accords are nice but dont wanna have a note over 200 bucks.

and I peeped VWvortex and didnt see anything bad, my boy has a VW and put like 25k a yr miles on it (highway) and no issues lol, I work from home half the week and drive highway the other days so it won't get much wear.

and what year jetta did you have? current gen or like a 04 joint? lol

um my jetta was a 2012 it wasnt a base either

why would i be talking about a 04?

the current have a new engine i know a lot about vws and ppl in the community as i am a big VAG fan (volkswagen automotive group), like i said go to vw vortex.....the engine i had was very reliable prob the most reliable as far as VWs, now if you get a new one they are turbos again and new engine an you should check out forums first, how long do you plan on keeping this car and like i said a base jetta will not hold value at all, youre coming from a camry to a vw an im sure you dont wanna deal with maintenance either youre not even a car guy lucky

its your money though bro, you literally spend hundreds a month as a foodie and you go hard on supplements

youre better off getting a used honda than a new jetta base model imo
