This club we setup seems like a big failure as of right now. But people do have busy lifes. Students might have more of less time then full time workers, and part time workers will have more time then others(depending) etc... We're figuring it out.. But at this moment, I will say a mandatory discussion should be held at the end of the month. People can chime in and decide if it should be half way or the full novel, since I know a lot of members have finished it in whole already. SO CHIME IN!!

We can scrap this novel as a fail and move on to the next book with hindsight maybe?

But I think this Club is good for some members for reading motivation. These are my two cents, since the thread has become confusing and stagnant. LUK??!!

I just purchased a tablet, since I was reading the novel on my LG G3, and it wasn't a comfortable experience. I can't read on my desktop or laptop because they're to stationary. Anyways, lets keep this going.

Honestly I don't think about the discussion because the thread falls off the front page. Maybe some light discussion in the spoiler tags throughout so that the thread doesn't fall?

We definitely need to use this first month as a learning tool. The setup and and organization hit off really well but the excitement has inevitably died down a bit. I think it's important for members to try to stay motivated to read and allocate sufficient time in your day to do this. It could be 20-30 min per day and that could lead up to an 1 hour or 2 hours of reading if you really start getting into the book.

We should probably put the next batch of books up for nomination as well, to give everyone time to vote and pick up a copy.

Here is my contribution to start off some discussion
I found the quantum mechanics part very interesting in the way it ties into the "time" theme.
I guess you could say Nao and Ruth are truly "entangled" through the medium which is time, or the diary, or Ruth's dreams

This Proust quote stuck out to me:
"In reality, every reader, while he is reading, is the reader of his own self. The writer's work is merely a kind of optical instrument, which he offers to the reader to permit him to discern what, without the book, he would perhaps never have seen in himself. The reader's recognition in his own self of what the book says is the proof of its truth"

I think by reading Nao's diary, Ruth became alive in those moments and in a way found a purpose for "the time being". I think this "awareness" or "observation" ties nicely into the religion and science parts. She in a way, was able to define herself and find an identity

The "zen moment" is brought up a lot in the novel and living in the "now". The problem is, you can't have a moment or be aware of the "now" without defining or observing it(the measurement problem & schrodinger's cat). But when you're doing this, that moment is already in the past? Idk if any of that made sense , but I enjoyed how Ozeki layered this novel with different aspects such as religion, science, Japanese culture etc. It was very easy to read and flowed seamlessly between the Ruth and Nao passages.

Really liked all the parallels throughout the book

I also sorta like the idea that Ruth was insane the whole time because she was slowly developing dementia but thats just me

Oliver was a pretty funny character...dude would space out and then have the most insightful thing to say

observations

Naoko/Nao= Now

time being= for now

a tale for nao

a tale for ruth

a tale for us

The movie, Coherence(2013) explores multiple realities like the Schrodinger cat
