Moving to NorCal from SoCal

^^^^Sure you don't want to just live in SJ since that is where your job is? You have a car, so you can always drive into the city. Living in SJ might be about the same in rent and you won't have to commute. Oakland is becoming better but it's the best living experience ever. The beauty of the Bay is you can always drive to spots cause they are not far away. Traffic can be a factor but it's not like LA. Plus Bart will shoot you down to SF and even Oakland.

Very true. I have some ears to the ground for me in SJ but the most important thing I want to know is:

What the yambz lookin like? Especially on the sistahs front? :nerd:

This is sort of a generalization cause I am not from SJ area and don't the intricacies of everything there but that is a heavily populated Vietnamese area. The Bay is a melting pot though and has tons of races in all cities. Plus everyone parties in different areas. I would just go where ever things are poppin. If and when you move up, check this site or subscribe to their weekly udpates. You'll know where to go from there.

Wait what? Your job is in Sj but you want to live somewhere else and take public transportation? lol. That's ridiculous.

Plenty of reasonably priced places within 10-15 min commute of where you work. Hop on Craigslist and find a place to pay 700 or so for a bedroom month to month near your work. Once you get here you will know where you want to live two months after working. Then, reassess and figure it out.

I've moved a few times in my life and getting a permanent one year lease place before getting to know the area is a big no no, especially with the multitude of options u have for ahort term on CL in the Bay Area.

I have lived in a lot of different cities surrounding San Jose including cupertino, sunnyvale, san jose, campbell, los altos, mountain view, burlingame, and a couple other areas. (I move a lot) I'm in burlingame right now and i like it due to being closer to the city and my work (san mateo).

My recommendation would be stick close to San Jose and you'll be able to find spots for cheap. If you want some entertainment, bars and a downtown area then Campbell is recommended. San Jose will have a variety of spots that you will be able be able to find both cheap and decent areas to live in. If you don't mind some "hood" (but not really) spots check parts of DT San Jose and areas near the airport. The most "ghetto" area of San Jose is east side San Jose, and even there its not too bad.

Good luck on the search!

:nerd:

I got the job fellas. Will be starting on the 31st so I'll be needing a spot IMMEDIATELY

Open to living in Silicon Valley or East Bay. Don't mind a roommate situation. Send help plz and thanks!

Congrats on the new job man!

Where exactly you working. (Area) and I'll tell you what your commute will be like. It takes me 45 mins to go 15 miles, on a good day. Leave my house at 6:20 to get to my job in Santa Clara at 7am on the dot. I'm coming from south San Jose.

Oakland to SJ commute will hurt after time...I'll tell it to you like this, even without traffic that commute is about 35-45 min. Adding traffic to that will easily be more than an hour. Maybe an hour and a half one way.

I'm not sure what your monthly expenses, but I make $60k a year (married with a kid), and I live in San Leandro (work in Palo Alto). If I didn't have a kid plus my student loans, then I think I could make it living on my own but I wouldn't have much play money.

Room mates are definitely recommended. Feel free to DM if you have any questions.

Congrats on the jobs!

Thanks to all who responded!

So once I sign my offer and such, I'll be working with VTA so I'll be at their headquarters which is basically off the River Oaks Light Rail Station ( DadNboujee DadNboujee it's basically 1st and Tasman)

I was also considering making my boundaries be between Campbell and San Leandro. I figure that I can drive to the Hayward Capital Corridor Station and go from there. Plus we get free VTA transit and discounts for other agencies.

And I'm definitely open and actually welcome roommates.

Don't wanna thread jack but taking a last minute trip to Santa Cruz. Anything worth doing/stopping by in San Jose?

I know exactly where that is. My company built those new apartments on that stretch of land there. But if you are coming from the east bay to go to the South Bay it's never a miss on traffic. Always screwed I suggest you look in the southbay. my coworker just moved from so cal to work pretty much in the same area as you. He got a studio in downtown San Jose, and ended up moving to the east side of San Jose. (In a bad area lol)

if you're open to roommates, you can actually live fairly close to downtown. if you're looking to live alone, anywhere on the peninsula might and around SJ might be tough on $60K. you might be able to do santa cruz, aptos, etc...but that's going to be a ***** of a commute every morning. i'd recommend a roommate or two. it'll open your options up to some really cool areas.

san jose boring as hell.
Besides Santana Row, I never go to SJ for anything else

Talked to my master's program coordinator @ SJSU and she says that SJ is such an ugly city

I'm not worried about much. I can drive/take BART from Fremont to anywhere. Most of my folk is out in Oakland and SF so I'll be good. Ain't like I'll be having much time to play outside of work, school and gym ::\
