I have definitely heard Dominicans (along with Ricans, Cubans etc) refer to themselves as Spanish.

As a light skinned descendant of American slaves I have plenty of European blood and I recognize that it's part of my lineage but that's where it stops. Black American/AA is my culture and I recognize the affect the slave trade had but I'm not out here calling myself English

Because they're not African American.

Stop it, you are making too much sense.

Also the Jamaicans are not claiming they aint black.

 I find that funny man, our makeup is basically identical plus a large Chinese influence as well. "African American" is a culture man, you don't have to identify with it, but you're damn sure black. I'll leave it alone though, dudes never have intelligent arguments on this topic, they all turn into ninjahoods and get defensive.

Yeah yeah yeah...they black! Period. Fight it all you want. That's one of our great attributes...we come in ALL shades. Don't matter what land you are on NOW. What matters is where you started before being shipped, drug, forced there etc. That's history...

Cats kill me with that "I'm in Brazil, so how am I black" talk [emoji]128514[/emoji] if you don't go sit down somewhere!

Books are dangerous to ignorance! [emoji]128175[/emoji]

I've seen plenty of people say they're Half-Dominican/half-black. Why not just say half-American?

bet your family and friends aren't haitians who have to worry about deportation

"The repatriations are not going to be "a witch hunt," Interior Minister Ramon Fadul said. "It will be a gradual process, as it should be, without any sudden surprises."

But Dominican officials also warned that people should start carrying documents to prove they are legal residents, to avoid deportation in case authorities stop them."

if you cant see through this... you are blind.

Tbh that's irrelevant.....I'm talking about how little this issue affects ANYONE visiting regardless of how dark your skin is.

What's wrong with Dominicans Ricans and Cubans denying thier black ancestry...and why should any Black American give a damn?????

It's not like we are all holding hands singing Kumbaya.

I swear some of you pro black fools on here act like scorned women when it comes to stuff like this.

Stop expecting everyone to be down with the cause...obviously they are not, some frown upon Black Americans anyway.

Self hate is something they have to live with....no damns given stick with your own kind..and I'm not talking about nationality

There's nothing wrong with that, shoot I legimately believe I'm a member of a race of aliens that dwells on this planet. I never use that as a tool of oppression and brutality. You people can call each other whatever you want but once these labels start making life a living he'll for those you have chosen to exclude people have a problem. Manufactured racial boundaries in south America and the Caribbean, the biggest recipients of black African slaves are also the biggest perpetrators of color coded apartheid. So don't come at African Americans with that dimwitted, simplistic look at the racial dynamics of your Island.
I feel dat homie.

Only time we use Spanish as Latino/ Hispanic to describe who we are is when Americans ignorantly describe us as Spanish because of the language we speak and just makes it easier for us to communicate our description. I'm pretty sure if you go to any Spanish speaking country and ask if they are Español (exact translation of Spanish) or Latino/Hispanic 99.9%( the .1 will be Argentina) of the people will say Hispanic or Latino. so if you guys would use the correct terminology these U.S. Born Latinos/Hispanic will say the right thing and continue it. So please stop calling me Spanish and use Hispanic or Latino

Also from my personal experiences since everyone is being honest on this thread for the most part only people to call me Spanish are African Americans

What's funny is how, in America, people treat race as if it is culture.

Because they're not African American.

This country doesn't differentiate. I've never seen a checkbox for Jamaicans on an application. But I'm sure you knew what I meant from the jump.

Sammy Davis hit it on the head. I've never heard a Dominican or any other Latin refer to themselves as Spanish in terms of the country but more so the language we speak.

I've also never heard a Dominican call themselves white because they think they're some type of European.

Dominicans can be as black as Mtumbo or as white as eminem and every color in between, we just don't wanna be classified by color. Call us Dominican!

You guys can't keep it straight to hold a point. Dancing between nationality, ethnicity, race and culture. Making them intertwine to fit your point. Keep it simple.

In all fairness black can mean race, ethnicity or culture. Dominican can mean culture and nationality, and possibly a "race". That's what makes these labels more or less meaningless....until rights get taken away from people because of it.
Agreed!

So you call yourself spanish out of convenience instead of educating the people who call you a term you wouldn't classify yourself as?

Makes so much sense! :rolleyes

Dominicans dont want to be called black but they dont mind being called spanish.. i can stand in between a group of dominicans with my mouth closed and no one would suspect me of not being dominican. So what am I? Im a trinidadian who identifies as black yet my caribbean cousins who look like me act like black aint apart of their bloodline. I have spanish(spain) italian, potuguese and indian(india) in me too but Im black...

Its because you love yourself and the color of your skin.

Some people just don't

True, it is what it is, that's their prerogative.

Ive worked with my fair share of Hispanics and they will describe someone to me as a "Spanish dude "

To be fair, they are the hood type dudes though. Some of them who understand very little Spanish and don't speak it at all

As you saw at the end of my 1st paragraph that's what I did. I also do it in real life. And of course I consider my self a black man. Never said I didn't. My response was to Dominicans thinking they are Spanish. Only place I've heard that is in USA

Its hilarious because my sister is Nigerian but speaks fluent spanish. She goes to Carribean stores and neighborhoods all the time. Especially when getting her hair done. Since she speaks fluent spanish everyone asks where she is from (me too if I keep my mouth shut since I dont speak spanish fluently).

"What part of Cuba are your parents from?"
"Are you Colombian?"
"Dominicano?"

These are all things they ask her and she is 100% Nigerian. The fact that Dominicans cant tell their own countrymen from Africans who speak spanish says more than enough

The funny thing is Nigeria was colonized by the British. Hella nigerian slaves were sent to the Americas. They cant tell a Nigerian from themselves because they have so much Nigerian blood they dont know who is who!

Bro are you serious!?

Is not that easy for Hispanics to be picked out based on just their looks, I've had middle eastern patients speak to me in their native tongue, there are Panamanians that can easily pass off as Nigerian, Hondurans that can pass off as Asian, there are Mexicans and Ecuadorians that can pass off as Australian or the whitest of the whites, we come in all different shades, shapes and sizes, different hair colors, textures, different eye colors, etc. Latin America is composed of whole bunch of countries all with different mixtures from around the world, different cultures and even different languages....why are you guys so hell bent with Latinos claiming their African roots so bad?...we are Hispanic bruhs, that doesn't exclude our African roots or our eauropean or Asian roots either.

Just drop it already...
