in the nfl you have to hit beyond the 1st round.. and especially cant take misses in the top 10 (not so much anymore with the rookie wage scale in place.. but you have to hit just because of the opportunity to get a quality guy on the roster)

your 1st and 2nd rounders need to be the stars to lockdown starters.. but the rest of your draft picks is what makes your team, that's your cheap labor and fills out the roster

also, you have to have a solid foundation in place when you start paying guys (or decide to let guys move on)

How would letting go of CJ help the Lions?

It wouldn',t

We have 31 million in cap space next year before cutting Tully, Pettigrew and Mathis

Trade or cut him and its still 13 million in dead cap and we still have to pay his replacement.

It doesn't make sense to trade him unless a team is coming off a high 1st which no one is doing for a 30 year receiver.

Teams that have sustained success draft well and use their cap space to keep their drafted players.

The fact that the only All-Pro outside of Megatron that the Lions drafted in the last decade was put in a position to even leave the team shows the ineptitude of the Lions' front oiffce.

All this "use money to buy a o-line" talk is why bad teams stay bad. Building your team through free agency has pretty much never worked long term .

Stafford is going to wind up on a team like Houston or my Jets. And Detroit will feel great about parting ways.

That money could be used to pay OL to keep stafford upright and help RBs

Well those guys aren't cheap.

CJs salary isn't keeping the team down.

Lions are 2nd in payroll and he's a 20 Millie cap hit.

There's a few bad contracts, he's one of them.

He's a 20 million dollar cap NOW because they had to keep restructuring his contract to sign players to make up for the draft picks that busted out.

Its not as simple as you are trying to make it.

I agree, but a solid OL signing might help more then paying Megatron all that money to run sprint down the field with Stafford gets sacked.

Paying WRs doesn't work, and winning the FA doesn't either.

There's a balance.

I don't like paying WR big bucks because it doesn't equal wins /playoff wins.

That's where I'm coming from.

We done this song and dance before. Outside of quarterback giving top of the market contracts to any position players doesn't equal wins.

Stafford is going to end up in Dallas either this offseason or next.

Jerry already put the feelers out.

Martin Mayhew was one of the worst drafters though, PERIOD.

Dude couldnt spot talent if it slapped him in the face. If you look at the players drafted 2nd round and beyond he has probably the worst track record Ive seen. We have reached on so many players that have hardly ever seen the field.

As far as Stafford goes, I am not sold he is the problem. Our offensive coaches have been pretty terrible and he has never had a good coaching staff around him.
More importantly though I dont think there are any QBs in the draft this year that are going to be any good, and there sure as hell aren't any better ones in free agency.

I draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd and give him one more year with the new coaching staff.

If flames out, its been real.

Lynch and Goff will both be legit

Kessler would be a QB I would draft and groom but not start him year one

I'd try to get as many draft picks as possible. Boys style back in the day

Rams ha
We have. But playing devils advocate.

Paying a OL > Paying a WR.

Having a top 3 paid OT or DE has got you as much success has a top 3 paid WR.

Well I'm going off the notion as paying that 20 Millie to 2 serviceable OL.

You aren't getting them for that price though unless you drafted them.

That's why I said its not that simple. Any good tackles that are worth signing ain't hitting free agency and if they do you ain't getting them for 10 mil a year.

Where do you guys think Josh Gordon ends up next season? Watch him go to the Patriots....
