Asian Culture Discussion Thread

My Filipino friends have me glued to Wikipedia to research backgrounds, because they claim EVERYONE as part Filipino. Obviously they're joking half the time, but sometimes I learn that someone really is part Filipino (like Enrique Iglesias).

My friends that are Kings fans told me Demarcus Cousins was part Filipino :smh:  After he went to New Orleans though, they're in complete denial of ever claiming him

You need to slap your friends. Glad mine don't do that stuff. Trying to draft people like a nationality competition is coming up.

unpopular opinion: while most of the filipinos i know praise pacquiao, i'm not a fan of him at all.

i find him quite ignorant & i don't know why he's a politician when he's clueless. i heard he wants to run for president after duterte

I know they do it just as a joke though. They'll pick random @#$ people that have zero connection to the Philippines just to get me to waste my time to look it up  Like I said, sometimes they're actually being serious, so I HAVE to check to make sure

It was nauseating hearing family and friends pretend to be boxing fans and them acting like he's the best ever. I bet if I asked them to put up wagers for his fight with floyd, half would've bet manny to win because they're brainwashed and the other half would've declined because they knew he was going to get washed. Coincidentally my dad has been watching boxing on his phone all morning.

I dont think its that unpopular anymore. Nobody really cares about him anymore.

It was cool when he was an unstoppable force and regular tito a couple or 10 years ago but he showed too much of himself and is just delusional with the god stuff and politics. His skill and work ethic is respectable but hes just a little odd. He could have also made a lot more money if he knew how to talk and market properly.

Its a damn shame, pure of example of folks ridin with you when times are good and kickin you to the curb when you're no longer relevant. I noticed a major decrease in support from his fellow fil-ams after marquez iced that ***.

Hilarious. My mom claims Enrique Iglesias to no end.

On the subject of identity, I've come to terms with how I self-identify when approached. Although I am Filipino and am Asian I will always tell people that I'm from the Bay from the gate. I really didn't have Asian friends until my freshman year of high school.

To be fair his heart is in the right place when it comes to his countrymen. As far as politics goes, dude never went to school and literally grew up on the streets. As long as he puts his peoples first, i dont have an issue with it. I mean ****, look who's our president now.

I liked Pac but would hate when he had a fight coming up cause my filipino coworkers would talk about him non stop, hyping him up to no end. Then all those dudes said he sucks when he lost :smh:

Bandwagon fans at its finest

I was one of the few asian dudes in vegas rocking with TMT when he fought floyd. Maan there sure was a lot of sad pinoys in the departure gates while going home.

Your Filipino coworkers are unloyal

The Filipinos at my workplace blamed Floyd for running around like a coward and said it was rigged

Pacquiao is an inspiration to Filipinos everywhere, but he needs to get allllllll the way out the paint in the political world. He's way over his head. A lot of those fools are, actors and basketball players get elected all the time :smh:

Do you guys pay attention in Philippine politics ? Pacquiao is doing great as a senator. He actually has his own private counsel of top lawyers and Poli Sci Professors that lecture him about the law and politics in the Philippines. It's quite impressive actually. The guy isn't the brightest, but he is making it work with shear will and focus. So far, his heart is with the poor people. I just hope power doesnt corrupt him like it does to most politicians.

And yeah, Duterte. The guy is awesome. I visited the PI 4 times in the past 12 months. If you ask the locals, there is definitely a feeling of safety - especially in the city (Manila).

I love manny but he's an absentee politician and just recently based his support of the death penalty on "even Jesus was sentenced to death"

Duterte, people feel safe that were already safe. Ironically the people getting the worst of the war on drugs are the poor, who need help the most. I don't want to turn this into a politics thread but yeah it's bad out there.

I remember being told growing up Mike Myers was half-Filipino.

I really don't understand the fascination of wanting to see folks claim celebrities as half-Filipino.

IMO, Vanessa Hudgens looks more Filipino than Mexican to me..I think that's only because I dated a Filipino/Mexican.
