That's the ABC gimmick. Nothing means anything. A bombshell happens then it gets resolved in the first 5 minutes of the next episode. They've burn through at least 3 seasons worth of material and the season isn't over yet.

Thought the plot itself was interesting when the show first came out. The acting sucks, but I was just interested to see what was going to happen. Writing is all over the place though...
