I do not think that it's a big enough factor to really put it at the forefront. Even though it is a very small sample size, my whole crew growing up were raised by single mothers and I've worked with enough youth over the years to know that your family type isn't a big enough factor to predisposition to a life of crime.
You get in some dangerous territory when you start implying that someone living in the hood or of a lower socio-economic status should dictate whether or not someone should have children. What's next? We sterilize everyone in the hood? All minorities?
I know enough people with money that live in the suburbs that have kids for dumb reasons (to stay together, they think it will make them happy, religious reasons, etc)
The biggest difference between a kid growing up poor in the hood and a kid with money is access to opportunities. When you don't have them and the justice system being inherently racist to poor minorities the odds are against you.

I've been to Chicago probably 20 times in the past 3 years. Never once have I felt unsafe or witnessed anything bad. I hope I can continue to say that, as Chicago is a go to destination for me. It's still sad and terrifying what's going on however.

Republicans like this guy are hilarious hypocrites. Repubs are against big government but are ok with telling poor people how to live their lives. All people in society should have the opportunity to pro-create. Some people may not have much to live for but having Children can give them a purpose in life. Who are we to say who should and shouldn't have children? Giving birth is a human right. Of course hypocritical anti big government republicans want to act like big government and tell you how to live your life....

There are many people who grew up in harsh conditions that did not resort to reeking havoc on society there is no excuse for some of these clowns i just chalk it up to some people are just bad people no matter the conditions no excuses

I'm from Chicago and live there new (until I move back west) and honestly the north side is fine. Downtown is fine. I never go to the west or south side so I can't speak on that. If you're in the nicer parts you should've have an issue. I have heard of a couple women who were robbed in the lakeview area though. Both were walking alone at night and both got their purses taken. Also, this guy I know fell asleep on the red line cause he was drunk and when he woke up his pockets were slit. These are about the only instances I personally know of. All the murders you hear about are on the south and west side primarily which Im never at.

The neighborhood is near and dear to my heart.
It was the first primarily black self-governing community north of the Mason-Dixon line, so it seems to be a good fit to what you think you know.

I hate to say it, but tearing down the projects was the worst thing that ever happened to Chicago. I am from there, was raised in calumet city, and relocated to Florida two years ago. The gang activity when they tore down the projects spread throughout the city and that explains the recent spike in violence. Also they made it really easy to afford housing in the suburbs thanks to section 8. So you have these areas where there was little to no gang presence and these gang members see it as a opportunity to take over and make some serious money. It doesn't help when you have dudes like Chief Keef glorifying the street life

Close to 400 years of slavery. Jim Crow laws. Then when black people built their own communities and businesses white folks destroyed them. The prison and court system are blatantly racist. Cops are blatantly racist. Terrible school systems.
