Close friends and family get the hand slap hug just long enough to pat'em on the back and release. If done correctly should take .6 seconds if emotional maybe 1.7 seconds. It's science really.

The older I get, the more confusing it gets. I shake hands formally now moreso nowadays even though I hate it, esp the first few times I meet someone.
As far as hugging, shake transitioned to a one arm hug if it's a friend I haven't seen in a long time. Both arms if it's a relative I haven't seen in a long time. I don't know why. It just feels right. A two arm embrace from a friend feels like a violation.

Depends on the relationship and the circumstances.
Regarding my closest friends, its a handshake followed by a a one arm hug. I would only do a two arm hug to them if the situation is a life changing event.

Because of where I live, I only see my best friends like once a quarter, maybe a little longer, so every time I see them I go with the hug initially. To me it's like going in for the real thing (pause). I don't think it's weird at all
