Sam Altman is putting a lot of faith in the idea that giving people free money will make them happier and healthier, but that doesn't mean he's betting it all.

Altman is the president of Y Combinator, Silicon Valley's largest startup accelerator. Beginning in 2017, he and a group of YC researchers are launching an experiment in Oakland, California, where roughly 100 families will get $2,000 a month.

The goal is to capture data that reveals if free money on a regular basis (known as a basic income) really does help people escape poverty and live healthier lives

Been hearing talks about it lately and was wondering how would NT feel about a basic income. I already now two peiple for sure wont support it. I think we all know who they are tbh.

I myself don't think I would support basic income.
We already know that with ANYTHING there is a certain percentage of people that will take advantage of a situation.
This would be one of those where a large number of people would take advantage.
Free money that you don't have too do anything for?!!

Nah I'm not with this one.
Unless someone can shed some light on the benefits this could provide.

Lol what do you mean what kind of benefits this would provide?

Could you not use an extra $2000? Obviously there would be certain requirements and guidelines that would need to be met in order to qualify. And people taking advantage is a poor excuse. People will always take advantage of a good service provided for them. Imo, the pros outweighs the cons

Nah, some pos like McDonald employees already get too much as it is.
How the **** is it called fast food and y'all take 5+ minutes to heat up some nuggets and they still look like ****.
Need to give those scum 5.15 a hr
Bout $15.
Foh, go suck a **** on the corner if you can't afford ya rent.
Bet they wouldn't be able to get that **** done on time and correct either.
******* garbage.

Them giving you one sauce for your 30 nuggets may be clouding your judgement

If there are guidelines and requirements needed to apply then how is this any different from welfare?
And I meant societal benefits not personal benefits. Of course I would love for someone to just give me an extra $2000/month
But the money has to come from somewhere if we do this on a national scale. Which means it will probably come from the taxpayers.

Listen, my whole shtick is about philanthropy and helping others but I just don't think giving people a salary benefits them. It pacifies them.

It kinda the same thing that happened during desegregation. They gave black folks better jobs and some more freedoms and
many people took it as a total victory and stop fighting. Meanwhile they were destroying our neighborhoods and cooking up a new way to enslave us.
Through our minds.

And how do they think this would get funded if it were to be implemented on a large scale?

Don't we already have welfare?

I think this is satire, but I'm not 100% sure

After reading the article, ,one thing I ABSOLUTELY agree with is it will free people up to do things they actually WANT to do instead of
working a job they hate for the sake of paying the bills. And since we know most people live paycheck to paycheck it basically what I call
"working your life away". Which I am Vehemently against.

Go to work everyday, basically working for the weekend on off weeks and working for payday on pay week.
On the weekend you spend one day trying to recuperate and the other day dreading going back the next day.
Especially if you have a job where they like to call you in on your off day. >:

IMO this is not living.

So I guess that would be a benefit. People would be happier because they could pursue things that make them happy.

But this could only happen in the automated AI dominant workforce type of world that they talk about because otherwise who is gonna come pick up our trash?
Who is gonna serve me my food at the restaurant, who is gonna clean septic systems? Who gonna do all the undesirable work that no one wants to do if everyone has enough money to do what they want to do?

Backing in your previous omment, I honestly dont know how welfare works so i can't speak on it too much but just what you mentioned above is a benefit along with helping people get on their feet to get them started. For example, this could benefit the poor. People wanting to start businesses among other things. My basic outline is this. I personally believe everyone should recieve some level of basic incone. On a tiered level based mostly on income and somewhat on age. Someone making 500k shouldn't get the dame as someone making 40k. For me, it allows room for growth. Having a financial burden is very limiting like you said above.

The government will be the ultimate, centralized redistributor of wealth.

What could go wrong?

And the day that happens, $2,000 might or might not buy you a loaf of bread.

Was thinking would it be better to do it on a state or federal level.

Majority of people are going to go out and spend this... Either for material goods or in ways that better themselves.

Regardless, it'll get spent. If we still get it while working even better ya boy could use an extra 24K/yr.

Will be mandatory regardless as time progresses and automation really starts to have an impact on the workforce.

$2000 a month would be insane. When I was imagining it, I thought 1000 was a good maximum. 24k that will just jave people say **** their part time jobs

When they're getting flexed on by people who still work I dont believe it.

Cuba on steroids.

You two have no idea what you're running your mouths about.

Tons of free market loving libertarians love the idea of universal basic income.

And it gels very easily with capitalism

-And da irony of a person that relies on government wealth redistribution to make rent looking down on the next man

I always thought it was idiotic the folks who skip the good social programs do and focus on the minority who take advantage. What do those few have to do with you? Even so these are poor people, meanwhile larger, budget heavy institutions are more wasteful than those people will ever be. A bunch of selfish, hateful weirdos man.

Weirdo's? They are the norm.

Race is the most consequential force in american life, it stand to reason that it makes people do irrational things.
