CLIFF NOTES - Don't use Uber in Cancun.

_______________________________________

So I have been in Cancun since Sunday stating at an AirBnb.

Tuesday we decide to catch an uber to isla de mujeres... or actually a ferry that takes us over, anyway, we spend the day on the island and it's really dope.. we take the ferry back and proceed to call an uber to take us back to the Airbnb.

The Uber driver calls me and tells me to make sure I am not standing by any taxis and I told him I wasn't so just follow my pin drop etc... so there were taxis around the corner (he new this) and one of the taxis drove by us really slow and then sped off... my uber driver called back and said he drove by but couldn't stop because there was a taxi by us.

At this point I am confused and hell, our uber driver tells us to cross the street and wait at this bus stop and he's pulling around... we walk over to this bus stop and on the way over we see spray painted on the wall "fuera uber" (roughly translates to "get out Uber".

We arrive to the bus stop and three taxis show up and ask us if we need a ride, we say no, they then proceed to literally block the road with their cars so NO traffic can get through.. our Uber was in the line of cars blocked and he cancelled our Uber reservation.

We had to walk back across the street and get a taxi and they weren't happy that we called an Uber.... we had to pay almost triple what our uber cost to get to the ferry on the way back.

We explained the story to our Airbnb host and he said that Uber is not legal here yet.. but it's not illegal either. He says the taxi drivers are like a mafia charging whatever they want to tourists and will block a road to stop a uber driver then pull the driver out of the car (yes in the middle of the road) and beat them up .. and the proceed to call the cops and tell them there is a stranded car in the middle of the road so it gets towed.

Cancun has been very nice, aside from the Uber experience.

Ubers and taxis got beef. When i was in puerto rico i seen a taxi and uber cat going at it.

Doesn't mean ubers in cancun suck tho, i think its some kind of policy.

always question how much a taxi driver is charging you too.

when we were out there we left senor frogs and drivers were charging 500 peso back to our hotel. went around to a different street and they charged us half that.

they just be naming prices trying to take advantage.

Sounds about right tbh
Taxis are scared that uber and lyft will put them out of business

Last time I was in vegas had to take a taxi because they are "banned" from McCarran..the terminal anyway

its cause taxi were there first taking advantage of people like you, how they gonna let someone come in on their turf...lol should of just took a taxi everyone watches everything there

But have y'all seen this uber killer? I was at my boys apt the other day smoking these dudes created flyers and passed em out, basically charging 35$ a week to take you to the doctor, grocery shopping, to the zoo lmao...they also charge 50$ per person for prison visits lol

this is happening across a lot of cities in different countries

especially where there is a high level of tourism

seen it firsthand in Rio, and in Rome.

ubers in rome operate like a pro car service., uber black only.

Taxi's gonna be a thing of the past with uber and lyft taking all that money. Went to New Orleans ab 2 weeks ago now and no one was using the taxi's they looked so mad and there was a crazy line for uber and lyft

My homie is in Mexico right now. He had a similar situation happen the other day. He ended up paying for a taxi, with a $2 bill

It's a form of a monopoly the old heads are really not happy about. Like how only 4-5 conglomerates run the entertainment business. These app companies are about that kind of control.

I dip in and out of using livery and Uber. Uber been on some **** with that surge pricing. Papi from Audubon ain't going to charge me that much for the same trip even with tip.

cats uptown triple dip, be on uber, lyft, and picking up illegal blackcar hails at da same time.

I'd feel safer taking a taxi in Mexico than Uber. Especially since the legality of it is in limbo. You don't know the driver could be. Might be in it for a come-up, and who's gonna help you? At least taxis are regulated there.

You really believe they're regulated?

I took about 100 taxis in Mexico City. The cars and drivers are registered. Usually a photo ID is visible. I mean, yeah, **** could pop off but I'll take my chances with that.

Same thing happened to me when I was in cancun a couple of months back. The uber told me to walk to another side of the airport to meet him. It sounded sketchy  so I canceled the ride. I was told the same thing "uber is illegal". I was also told if the cops pull over the uber driver you can get arrested.
