Not sure if this will get deleted, but here it goes. But for the older heads out there I hope you can all sit back andreminisce for a sec.
This happened not long after the establishment of NT, and if the pictures of the samples wasn't posted on NT, you saw it on NikePark. The 2000 retro ofthe AJ5 White/black/red colorway was released 10 years ago today. "Jersey Joe" (some OG collector, older heads should remember him) posted onNikePark's forum saying he was copping 5 pairs, 3 on ice, 1 to wear and 1 to be buried in. There was hype in the sneaker community over these because itis the first time the V's were retro'd as Nike responded to the market demand of how well the AJ4 retro's sold (maybe with the exception of theretro +'s). But overall, you had to be a shoehead to be excited over this. People who didn't know shoes wouldn't understand, not like the recent'09 Spacejam drama.
It was a frigid winter Saturday morning when I picked up my pair at local Footlocker. There was no one in sight. This was way before "pre-orders" and when people wanted some kicks, they simply go to the mall early. In the store, they had '99 retro dunks still sitting on sale for $39.99 and nobody wanted them. I couldn't care less because Iwas there for one thing, the AJ5's. The sales guy gets my size and the shoe was pretty exact to the original except for minute details like the"flame" on the side was sharper on the retros, the inner logo on the tongue was right side up and the "Nike Air" in the back was curvier onthe OG's. Overall, Nike delivered and no shoehead was complaining about quality. It was the second release that used the then-new Jordan Brand box (thefirst being the AJ XV), in which was a black and silver box with MJ's face in a stylized print (before this they had the silver box with the red jumpman). The retro card was the picture of the famous "Wings" poster.
I paid for them and walked to my car (no need for police escorts
).Wore them every now and then for the past 10 years, never outdoors, and the shoe is still in 1 piece.
