Building a computer at least once is definitely a must for anyone who is mildly into tech. You'll learn a lot and it's one of the easiest things to dothat most people will be impressed by (besides learning a rubix cube).
I would recommend an Intel i7 processor if you're going to use it for gaming. at least 4 gigs of RAM, and a nice big monitor. I've seen decent22" monitors in the mid $100 range recently.
