Essential??

No.

Extremely helpful and convenient?

Hell yeah

I don't think you need to spend all that on a lap top

I'm taking Business Administration (Marketing) if that matters.

Discuss.

Why buy a Macbook? Not necessary for business. It's a great laptop, but you could get by with something a little less lavish.

No, but they're really handy. You can get one for $500, so don't assume you need to spend over $2000.

For me, a laptop is what got me through classes. Taking notes on laptop > taking notes on paper. I just created a new word doc for every class and titledthe file with date and subject of the class, so studying for a test was so easy because finding needed material was that much easier. And if you have teacherslike I did that like to ramble and go off on tangents, I would just log on to NT and pass time there until he got back on subject.

So IMO YES you NEED a laptop in college.

You don't want to shell out $2500 for one so who says you need a MacBook Pro? I mean, I'd love to get a MacBook Pro too so I'm not dissing Macs, but sounds like you don't have the funds right now. So my advice is to get a cheaper laptop. It's for school anyways. Get a new laptop when you'redone with school... That's what I'm doing.

you are in college son!!!! dont go bust that load on a lappy, and unless you are doing visual/audio you dont need a MacBook Pro....get a cheap Dell and dont doto much porn browsing.

and yes they are essential, how else are you supposed to pass the time in class, emulators son!!!!! EMULATORS!!!!!!

First of all dont be a grown man saying Lappy. Next its like a professor told me, college is an investment. If you want the most out of it you have to shellout money. And finally you dont have to drop $2400 on a laptop, now your just doing way to much.

Why such expensive laptops? You can get the cheapest $600-700 generic one and still be good or the entry MacBooks at $~1300.

Honestly I've never brought my laptop to school before. I have some friends who take notes on their laptops, but that's not me..I can write wayfaster on paper and I can see it at will.

So my answer is not a necessity at all.

Yes, as a business major you need a laptop, at least at my school. There will be classes where it is basically required to have one in class.

And since you're a business major get a PC because Office on a PC > Office on a Mac ... Not too mention having a Mac on campus was cool like 4 yearsago, now everybody has one, no longer does shelling out the price make you "different" or "rich," so why bother really?

EDIT: Also note the required computer science courses for business majors are also going to use PCs.

And using comps in the library can be a drag... having a lappy is sooo much more convenient.

for engineers it is very helpful, but remember, especially after reading through that economic thread (depressing), there are computer labs on campus, and ifyou can manage your time, you can save money there, if you are doing your homework and group projects on time and ahead of schedule.

people complain about the tuition/housing fees yet feel the NEED to spend 2400 on a laptop, here are cheaper options (ebay, back to school sales, etc)

Not mine, I can't decide if I should do the touchpad or just the keyboard. I'm going to do the touchpad if I can find the Santa Rosa touchpad inblack.

Opposite of this

If you really need a computer for the class, they'll put you in a computer lab. 1/4 of my core business classes required working on a computer, but I neverhad to use my laptop.

They are just spare parts. Ebay got them under Macbook Touchpad or macbook keyboard.

Here is a video on how to replace them.No thread jack.

Not essential, but could be a good tool. Most of the time I find people with laptops in class just screwin around. Paper and pencil is the best way to go IMO(im an engineer).

But it doesn't hurt to get one... but $2400? Save some money and get a HP or dell for $600-800. It'll do the job.
