Actually sinkholes are very common in Florida. its due the karst topography or the limestone that comprises alot of the states foundation. It is the reason there are so many lakes, especially in central florida and the panhandle. It's extremely porous and susceptible to erosion caused by ground seepage and our aquifer system. It is a bit surprising that you dont here about this stuff more but in the 80' a dudes housw and porches got swallowed up by a big one.
