Hackers Threaten to Expose 37 Million Cheating AshleyMadison Users

Late to the party, but all of their profiles are either bots or men anyway that just talk to you until you pay, then go ghost.

Regardless, this is awesome

15,000 government emails revealed in Ashley Madison leak bCory Bennett  - 08/19/15 09:55 AM EDT

Thousands of clients using the affair-oriented Ashley Madison website listed email addresses registered to the White House, top federal agencies and military branches, a data dump by hackers revealed.

The detailed data, released Tuesday, will likely put Washington, D.C., on edge. The nation’s capital reportedly has the highest rate  of membership for the site of any city.

Indeed, more than 15,000 of the email addresses used to register accounts were hosted on government and military servers.

Buried in the list are emails that could be tied to multiple administration agencies, including the State Department and Department of Homeland Security, as well as several tied to both the House and Senate.

For a month, hackers using the name “Impact Team” have been holding hostage  the dating profiles of those who registered on the site. The group threatened to publicly out the potential adulterers if the site’s owner, Avid Life Media, didn’t take down Ashley Madison, which uses the tagline, “Life is short. Have an affair.”

Security researchers said on Wednesday that they believe the data released following the hack at Ashley Madison is authentic.

“This dump appears to be legit,” said David Kennedy, CEO of information security company TrustedSec, which monitors cyber attacks, in a blog post. “Very, very legit.”

Security journalist Brian Krebs reported  several of the site’s users told him their real information is in the data dump.

The leaked database is staggering, according to researchers, and larger than expected at 37 million records, or nearly 10 gigabytes compressed.

“For folks that may not know, that is massive,” Kennedy said. “Huge.”

“It's full account information,” said Robert Graham, CEO of Errata Security, in a blog post. That includes full names, emails, phone numbers, addresses and passwords.

“It also includes dating information, like height, weight, and so forth,” Graham added. “It appears to contain addresses, as well as GPS coordinates. I suspect that many people created fake accounts, but with an app that reported their real GPS coordinates.”

Other tech news outlets, such as CSO, have discovered  British government officials, United Nations employees and Vatican staff among the millions of people in the leaked database.

However, the site reportedly did not check the validity of email addresses, and it’s likely that many of the government email accounts were faked. For instance, several emails were registered at “whitehouse.gov,” whereas White House officials use “eop.gov” for email communications.

The hackers have indicated their mission is to publicly shame the company, while also teaching its users a lesson.

“Find yourself in here?” they said in a statement posted with the data dump. "It was [Avid Life Media] that failed you and lied to you. Prosecute them and claim damages. Then move on with your life. Learn your lesson and make amends. Embarrassing now, but you’ll get over it."

Famous people have people on their payroll to do this for them. You think Charlie Sheen needs Ashley Madison? Nope. He has an assistant whose job description probably includes "go to local porn sets and find girls to hang with Charlie Sheen". In the end, I doubt there's really much of anything on AM in regards to recognizable names. And, Josh Duggar, while funny, is just one person out of millions. It's been a few days. We'd have gotten at least something else by now.

Think about it though. Perhaps their work email is an email that their wives wouldn't search, thereby leaving that in the clear?

I mean it definitely does sound foolish, but I'm trying to rationalize it here. They can't be that dumb.

I would assume that the wife stays away from any all work related stuff including work emails. Trying to stay as far away from suspicion as possible.

Or maybe since they are government related officials, it forbids them from having fake account emails? Idk

logic just tells you to make a fake email for AM only so I have no idea why they would do this.

Thing is though, if this many people are cheating, then what does that say about Marriage and monogamy?

Tired subject but if this many people would literally PAY just to cheat, then that says something about marriage because I doubt 37 plus million marriages are doing bad.

The sad part about what you said is people not even having privacy to their own emails

Period. Married or not. You have to make a fake email account because you "let" your wife check you other ones. Like people just give up their privacy like some suckas man

 For sure.

Reminds me of how when you're in a relationship not only with emails, but the wives now have consent to go through your cell phone whenever they please. It's as if the concept of privacy just vanishes when two people get in a relationship.

That lack of privacy isn't even healthy though and if you feel like you have to dip into your significant other's privacy, then you probably shouldn't be in a relationship. Warranted or not. But that's a topic for another time.

That is that @ksteezy  type of "open communication because I have nothing to hide" logic

Who says they're cheating? I said it earlier in the thread: we don't know the nature of the relationship of the millions of Ashley Madison users (the legit users). It could be an open marriage, it could be that a spouse has been rendered unable to perform due to a terrible accident, etc. A site like AM provides a convenient outlet for people seeking whatever relief (or exploration) they need outside their committed relationship. Yeah, there are plenty of scumbag cheaters on the site, but there are plenty of people who aren't. That's the problem with the hack. It's lumping everyone in the same boat. That's the worst part about all this.

How does the site work? Do you need to show certificate of marriage?

Because if not, I'm sure people sign up just to hook up.

I was monitoring the workplace this week because of this story to see who didn't show up for work, who showed up looking like they slept on the couch or who looked like they slept in their car.

Way to miss the point entirely. I mean, do you click a box that says "I am cheating on my spouse"? Just to confirm you are doing so?

The site is a hookup site. That is undeniable. The problem is nobody stops to think of all the reasons WHY people use it. Yes, there are people who use it as a way of cheating on their spouses. Those people are scumbags. However, there are also people who use it who are in perfectly fine relationships/marriages, but circumstances (open marriage, incapacity, etc.) lead to using AM as an outlet for fulfillment of a sexual need (not want, not desire, but need). Beyond what you think of the site on the surface, it does serve a real purpose. It's a convenient outlet.

If you can't grasp that concept, then there's no point in furthering the discussion.

This isn't really going to affect those in open marriages. At least, not spouse wise.

On another note.

**** getting married.
