I went to get rid of my high cable bill, what are my alternatives?

Most covered the basics. Couple things..

1.) you DONT need a $50 + antenna to get good HD signals. Its a waste of money unless you're buying something to MOUNT outside. Buy the CHEAPEST one you can find that does both UHF/VHF signals. I use the $8 antenna from Radio shack and it works WAYYYYY better than my neighbors who spent $40 on their "leaf" type antenna. Sure it doesn't look as good, but I'd rather have better reception than looks.

*** This is all depending on where you live. I live in the city so my signal is a lot higher than most.

You need an antenna that does BOTH because someone like ABC will only use VHF and CBS only uses UHF etc...

2.) Comcast is currently running $30 a month for 25MB p/s for a whole year. Buy your own modem and thats all you pay. At the end of the year threaten to cancel unless they give you the same deal.

3.) The idea of calling an "account specialist" is 100% right. These companies are NOT gonna "help" you unless you threaten or have leverage. I personally ask for "RETENTION DEPT." They WILL work with you if you're out of contract and are free to leave. TELL THEM what you want and have them figure out a package that fits you.

4.) Comcast ALSO offers internet tv now. Go to xfinity.com. I believe its $50 a month for around the same channels as sling plus HBO.

The Comcast offers depend on your area though.

It can be as much as 15-20 dollars more per month in some places

Any modem works, i dont think to has to be special one (does it?)

It does if you wan't the connection you're actually paying for, you want a docsis 3.0 modem. Bought this for Cox and I swear my speed is almost double what the advertised speed is.

remember to check your provider's compatibility first though.

The main cost is internet. Hard to find good streaming speeds for less than $70/mo.

DOCSIS 3.1is suppose to start rolling out by the end of this year.

In addition to the all the companies now trying to get to the 1GB tier. I think you will see speed boost across the board in 12-18 months.

We'll see because this is still a limited market. We can either have Comcast or Verizon in Pittsburgh, NY only has Time Warner. Monopolizing areas is what's killing the consumer.

Don't know how making it a utility will fare.

if i cut off time warner cable whats a good alternative for fast internet? Slingtv is looking pretty good, hows the quality of the stream though?

forgot about the modem. its so worth getting your own, the rental fees could cover that in a year..
