Vikings unveil plans for new fixed-roof stadium
Posted by Mike Florio on May 14, 2013, 1:16 AM EDT
It’ll open in 2016, after the Vikings spend two years playing home games outdoors. The wait could end up being worth it.
On Monday night, the team unveiled a proposed design for the new stadium, to be built partially on the site of the Metrodome.
“Tonight’s unveiling showcases a bold, iconic design delivered by HKS,” Vikings owner/president Mark Wilf said in a statement release be the team. “Not only is this facility unique to Minnesota, but the stadium will also provide Vikings fans with the best game-day experience in the NFL, which has always been our goal.”
The roof won’t be retractable, but it will appear to be that way.
“Vikings fans will be closer to the action than any stadium in the country,” Vikings owner/chairman Zygi Wilf said. “The combination of operable end walls with a clear roof and large windows throughout the facility will give fans the opportunity to experience the best of both worlds: an outdoor feel with protection from the elements.”
The new building will hold 65,000 fans, and it undoubtedly will host a Super Bowl at some point as part of the loose quid pro quo that arises from stadiums wholly or partially funded by taxpayer dollars.
