Need Help Buying A Camera

I got about $1000 I wanna spend on a camera but I have no previous knowledge of cameras.

I just want it to take nice pictures and if possible, to record HD videos.

I looked up a few Canon and Nikon cameras but I don't really understand the specs. However, based on reviews and customer commentaries, I'm leaningtowards a D90.

Anybody familiar with cameras willing to help? Thanks in advance NT.
