High-flying Nate leads field in Sprite Slam Dunk event

Posted Jan 24 2010 2:01PM

From Larry Nance, Spud Webb, Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins to Dwight Howard and Nate "The Great" Robinson, the Sprite Slam Dunk competition has become the place to be and the event to watch in the run-up to the All-Star Game. This season, Robinson will defend his title and try to become the first three-time winner of the event.

2010 Competitors: Nate Robinson, Gerald Wallace, Shannon Brown and Dunk-In winner (Eric Gordon or DeMar DeRozan)
What: Sprite Slam Dunk
When: Saturday, Feb. 13, 8:30 p.m. ET
Where: American Airlines Center
TV: TNT

Rules

Four dunkers will compete in the two-round competition

Officiating
: Throughout the competition, an NBA referee will judge whether a dunk is considered a made dunk or a missed dunk. He will also officiate as to what is an attempt.
Time limit: Upon receiving the ball from the referee, players will have a two-minute time limit to complete their dunk. Attempts resulting in missed dunks are unlimited during the two-minute time period. However, once a made dunk is ruled by the referee, that dunk will be scored. There is no replacing a made dunk, even if time remains.

Final attempts: If a player has not begun an attempt that results in a made dunk when the clock expires, he will have two final attempts to do so. An attempt is defined as the ball leaving the player's (or his teammate's) hand in an effort to complete the dunk (in any motion other than dribbling). The referee is the final judge and will advise the dunker when he has used an attempt.

Props: Use of any props (including the use of any person other than a current NBA player in uniform) to assist in any way during the competition must be approved in advance of the competition by the NBA Basketball Operations department.

Judging: There will be five judges. A score from six to 10 will be given by each judge, resulting in a maximum score of 50 and a minimum score of 30 for each dunk.

First round: The players will be scored on two dunks. The player with the lowest score for the first dunk will go first for the second dunk. The total for both dunks will be tallied at the end of the first round (maximum 100, minimum 60). The two dunkers with the highest scores advance to the final round.

During the first round, each player MUST use another active NBA player (who is in uniform) for a MINIMUM of one of his two dunks. In addition, an active NBA player (in uniform) may be used to provide an assist for ANY dunk during the entire competition (including the final round).

Final round: The players will be scored on two dunks. The dunker with the lowest score from the first round will go first in the final round. Dunks then alternate until each player has completed two. Time limit rules still apply.

Fan voting: At the beginning of the final round, fan voting polls will open via SMS text message and on NBA.com.

For text message voting, the letter "A" will be assigned to the dunker who goes first, and "B" for the other finalist. Fans can vote via SMS text message from their wireless phone by sending in the letter "A" or "B" to the wireless short-code 38657 (DUNKS).

Voting will be closed two minutes after the final dunk has been completed.

The combined SMS Text message and NBA.com votes will determine the champion.

The player with a higher percentage of overall votes, rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent, will be the winner.

Tiebreakers: In the event a tie in the first round needs to be broken in order to determine one or both of the top two finishers, a one-dunk "dunk-off" involving the tied players will take place to determine which player(s) will advance to the final round. In the event of a tie in the final round (exactly 50 percent of votes for each dunker), a one-dunk dunk-off will take place to determine the champion. Any dunk-off will be repeated as necessary until the tie is broken. All dunk-offs (including a final round dunk-off) will be judged by the panel of five judges. Time limit rules will apply for any dunk-off.

Instant replay: At the discretion of the referee, television instant replay may be consulted for clarification of rules compliance

Six shooters, chosen from the previous year's champion and the current season's top 3-point shooters, will compete in the two round competition. The three players with the highest scores from the frst round advance to the finals.

Order of compettion: The order in the final round will be by the inverse order of the first-round scores.

Ball racks/points: Five shooting stations around the 3-point line, with four orange balls and one multi-colored "money" ball each. The orange balls are worth one point. The multi-colored "money" ball is worth two points. From each rack, the multi-colored "money" ball can be shot only after the four orange balls are shot.

Time limit: Each participant has one minute to shoot as many of the 25 balls as he can.

Shooting line violation: Players may not start on or over the 3-point line while shooting. A basket does not count if the line is violated.

Tiebreakers: In the event of a tie that determines the final-round participants, a 24-second shootout will take place to break the tie. This process will be repeated if necessary until the tie is broken. In the event of a tie in the final round, to determine a champion, a full 60-second shootout will take place. This process will be repeated if necessary until the tie is broken.

Instant replay: At the discretion of the referee, television instant replay may be consulted for clarification of rules compliance.

Rose returns to defend title in Taco Bell Skills Challenge
Posted Feb 5 2010 2:32PM

The Chicago Bulls' Derrick Rose will defend his title in the 2010 Taco Bell Skills Challenge against Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks, Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns and Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz, as part of NBA All-Star Saturday Night on Feb. 13, at American Airlines Center in Dallas. The 2010 field features three of the event's six previous winners.

2010 TACO BELL SKILLS CHALLENGE COMPETITORS

Participant, TeamPos.Ht.Wt.

Brandon Jennings, MilwaukeeG6-1169

Steve Nash, PhoenixG6-3195

Derrick Rose, ChicagoG6-3190

Deron Williams, UtahG6-3207

With stations testing dribbling, passing and shooting, the Taco Bell Skills Challenge is an excellent measure of a players' overall game. The competitors must navigate through a series of obstacles, shooting stations and passing areas in the fastest time possible. The Skills Challenge is tailor-made for point guards and is a showcase for the NBA's best backcourt players.

In 2009, Rose electrified the All-Star Saturday Night crowd by finishing his final round with a reverse dunk to claim the title.

2010 Competitors: Derrick Rose, Steve Nash, Deron Williams, Brandon Jennings
What: Taco Bell Skills Challenge
When: Saturday, Feb. 13, 8:30 p.m. ET
Where: American Airlines Center
TV: TNT

Rules

Four players will compete in a two-round timed "obstacle course" event, consisting of dribbling, passing & shooting stations.

• TWO ROUNDS - The two players with the fastest times from the First Round advance to the Final Round.

ORDER OF COMPETITION - The order in the Final Round will be by inverse order of First Round times.

CLOCK - Players will be timed on a clock starting at 00:00.0. The clock stops when the final shot is made (Start and Stop is on referee's whistle).

BALL HANDLING - Players must observe basic NBA ball-handling rules while completing the course.

OPENING LAYUP/DUNK AND FINAL SHOT CHALLENGES - For the opening layup/dunk and the final shot, the player must rebound his own ball until the basket is made.

PASSING/SHOOTING CHALLENGES - The three passing and the "top of the key" shooting challenges are considered completed (player can move on) when he either (1) successfully hits the target/makes the shot OR (2) exhausts the corresponding rack of balls while attempting to make the target/basket.

TIEBREAKERS - In the case of a tie in either round (times will be to the tenth of a second), the tied players will repeat the course.

DISQUALIFICATION - Players are subject to disqualification for failure to complete all of the challenges as they are designed and intended to be run through (at the final discretion/judgment of the referee).

There are no "time penalty" assessments on the course.

INSTANT REPLAY -- At the discretion of the referee, television instant replay may be consulted for clarification of rules compliance.

H.O.R.S.E. event to test players' shot-making skill
Bringing a little bit of playground fun to All-Star Saturday Night, the NBA's H.O.R.S.E event, presented by Geico, challenges some NBA stars to a game of shot-making skill. Kevin Durant won the inaugural event in 2009 with a savvy mix of long-distance shooting and creativity. This year's event raises the stakes as the contest will be held on All-Star Saturday Night in front of a packed house in Dallas.

2010 Competitors: TBD
What: H.O.R.S.E. presented by Geico
When: Saturday, Feb. 13, 7 p.m. ET
Where: All-Star Jam Session
TV:
TNT

Rules

The game will use a traditional format in which three players will establish the playing order. Once a shot is made, the next player in the predetermined order will attempt the same shot. If that player misses, he is assigned a letter (ex. H for the first miss, O for the second, etc.).

The player following the miss can pick a new shot with which to challenge his competitors. There is no dunking allowed and players will have 24 seconds each to create and mimic shots.

Players remain in the game until they have missed five shots following made baskets, thus spelling the word H-O-R-S-E. An NBA referee will be assigned to authenticate the new shots (that the player executed what he announced) and any mimic shot.

Legends join NBA, WNBA stars in Haier Shooting Stars
Nothing brings the NBA together during All-Star weekend quite like the Haier Shooting Stars competition, a melding of the NBA's past and present with some WNBA thrown in. Three-player teams square off in this shootout, won last season by the team from Detroit.

2010 Competitors: Atlanta, L.A., Sacramento, Texas (complete roster)
What: Haier Shooting Stars competition
When: Saturday, Feb. 13, 8:30 p.m. ET
Where: American Airlines Center
TV: TNT

Rules

Four teams, comprised of an NBA player, an NBA legend and a WNBA player, compete in a two-round timed shooting event.

Game format: Shooting from six locations of increasing difficulty, teams attempt to make all six shots in numeric order in the fastest time. The two teams that hit all six shots in the fastest times will move on to the final round.

Shooting: Teams will shoot in inverse order of their first round time for the final round.

Spots: Six numbered shooting spots will be placed on the floor to designate each shot location.

Order of shooting: Each team must choose a specific order of shooting (Player A,B,C) and follow that order throughout the event (see below).

Play of game: Each shot must be made (unlimited attempts) before the next player begins shooting in succession. For Shot No. 6, Player C must make the initial attempt, then all three players will rotate (in A,B,C order) until the shot is made, which will stop the clock and give the team their official time.

Referee: A referee will be on-court to pass judgment on any violation of the rules.

Instant replay: At discretion of the referee, instant replay may be consulted for clarification of rules compliance.

Time limit: Each team will be given up to two minutes to complete the shooting course. The clock will be started by the referee and will start at 0:00 and count up. The clock will be stopped by the referee's whistle when the team makes shot No. 6. If a team has not completed all six shots before the clock hits 2:00, the horn will sound and the team's score will be based upon the total number of shots completed as of 2:00.

Tiebreakers: In the case of a tie (two or more teams complete all shots in the same amount of time, or teams only complete the same amount of shots after 2:00), a shootoff will be used to break the tie.

The clock will be reset (a time limit of one minute will be imposed) and the team that makes one shot from the No. 6 position in the shortest amount of time will, depending on the round, either advance to the finals or be declared champions.

If no team makes shot #6 in the tiebreaker, it will be repeated shooting from position No. 5.

Shot order, locations and player rotation:

Shot No. 1 -- 10 foot shot from right side angle -- player A

Shot No. 2 -- 15 foot shot from left side angle -- player B

Shot No. 3 -- NBA 3-Pt. shot from top of the arc/straight on -- player C

Shot No. 4 -- 18-Foot shot from right side baseline -- player A

Shot No. 5 -- NBA 3-point shot from left side angle -- player B

Shot No. 6 -- Shot from just inside half-court/straight on -- player C, player A, player B, repeat ...

Sold all my tickets so I'm not gonna be there. Made a little over 2 bills off of it though, which is actually low. I could have gotten like 5x more for those 128 row 2 tickets I sold even below face. They're going for damn near 800 now

3 point contest is gonna suck harsh.

daequan cook? paul pierce? CHANNING FRYE? seriously?

Daequan Cook is finding his stroke for the first time since the first week of the season.. That's my homie. I hope he is able to repeat this year.

all-star game sucks, i only care about the rookie game but its been a let down the last 2 years.

^How's the Rookie Game a let down? I dropped 46 pts last year
