We all know you are one of the biggest Alex fans on this board (up until recently. I could have sworn NT23 wasnt like this in the past.).....

But if you are 36 year old, future HOFer Peyton Manning, what do you value more?  A $12-14M a year contract with a team built to win the Superbowl or a $15-18M contract with a team that isnt very good?

Thats what I thought.
This.
Sometimes money isn't everything and winning is. Lets not forget, Peyton isn't desperate for money (at least I hope not). So if he has his mind right and he's ready to WIN and WIN NOW. He needs to go to the 49ers. We have weapons, Moss, Vernon, Crabtree. We have the top rated defense, and most of all we have a legacy, a legacy of rings and great quarterbacks.

I like Alex Smith BUT I do not trust him, especially when you have Peyton tapping you on the shoulder. I honestly believe our defense got us this far last year, while our offense just scrambled by the majority of it. With a threat like Peyton, our defense won't have to take to much of the brunt work.

Also whats the deal with Mario? Is he talking to other teams?

Nah, NT23 has always been that way.  I remember he was the last one most of us tried to convince that Alex Smith was no good and a draft bust, and this was even before Mike Singletary took over.  NT23 still makes the best game day threads though, I'll give him that much.

I was actually one you guys needed to convince before.  I used to be a huge Alex Smith supporter as well.  I owned his jersey (Got $5 for it at my parents garage sale in 2010

).  I got into it regularly with the homie BrightNikes.  But year after year of garbage play and making excuses for the guy wore me down.  I needed to start trusting my eyes.  He isnt a great QB, and chances are he wont ever be.

We need Peyton.  Period.

Let's get one thing straight: the San Francisco 49ers were a botched punt return (or two) away from playing in Super Bowl XLVI, not a quarterback away. Alex Smith played well in his first season under new coach Jim Harbaugh.

Here's the reality check, though: Smith is a free agent. So is Peyton Manning. One is being recruited like a blue-chip prospect. And one hasn't even been mentioned as an option for the several teams who need a signal caller.

The rest of the NFL had to get a chill when it was learned Friday that Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman worked out Manning early in the week and are in the hunt to make him San Francisco's quarterback. As scary as the 49ers were, Manning would make them downright frightening.

Though Manning played in a system for years in Indianapolis that he controlled like an X-Box gamer, picturing him with a rugged running game, tight ends who can take over games, a good, young offensive line and a defense that would give him short fields over and over is not something the other 31 teams want to even think about.

There's also wideouts Michael Crabtree and Randy Moss. Think they'd go Diva with Manning in the locker room?

Manning could have career-low passing numbers because of the short fields and the running game. But he could add a second Lombardi Trophy to his mantle and stack another one next to those already won by Hall of Fame predecessors Joe Montana and Steve Young.

The type of team San Francisco has also would allow Manning to play at 80 percent of his old self. The nerve issue, the Candlestick wind, etc., would not be big problems at all.

About the only thing that could be a potential stumbling block is Manning's strong personality not meshing with Harbaugh's. They are both incredible football thinkers and as long as the live in that vacuum, they'd be in sync. They're also strong-willed winners who might not be the Yin to each others' Yang.

Harbaugh is all about the team concept -- 53 players and a coaching staff that have shared equity. There is no superstar in the way he's been raised and the way he's always approached football. Manning would fit into that mold as far as work ethic and personality, but not as far as stature. Manning would outshine everything and everyone, simply by donning the Niners logo on the side of his helmet.

There would be some things to work through, no doubt, but wherever Manning winds up, there will be some obstacles to finesse.

As for Alex Smith's feelings possibly getting hurt by this revelation when the team openly professed its allegiance to him? It's merely another in a line of challenges he's endured since coming to the NFL. Smith is a good player and a pro and he'll deal with this. His agent, Tom Condon, reps Manning as well and Condon will find a way to smooth things out.

Manning to San Francisco would be a major game-changer. The 49ers already looked to be a force but Manning would amplify the threat 10-fold.

One final point: If Peyton was the Niners quarterback and faced his brother Eli in this season's NFC championship Game, would we even be talking about special team's miscues costing San Francisco the shot at the Super Bowl?

That article had me at Peyton Manning.

I'm already salivating as we speak of even chasing after Peyton. Signing Manning would not only help us in the present but will also be asset for the future in Colin Kaepernick. Peyton knows the end of the tunnel is near and he would be more than willing to be that teacher for Colin. DO IT TRENT!

DO IT! Any room on the bandwagon if Peyton signs, currently free agent as well since the Colts are incompetent.

I would love to see Manning as a Niner. It'd be crazy.

If Manning wants a deal similar to his previous one, then I'm curious to see if the Niners would do it.
Since they made it to the Championship game with Smith, maybe they think they can do it again, without dishing the major bankroll to what Manning wants.

But like was said on this board, if Manning drops down the figures he wants in his contract so he can play with a team with a defense like the Niners, a solid run game and weapons like Moss, Crabtree, V.D., delanie, and additional weapons on the way.....maybe it could happen.
