I figured it was my turn to make this thread.  French Open Starts today.

I have Rafa on the men's side and Justine on the women's side (even though my heart is pulling for Venus).

Fantastic. Thanks for making the thread.

You gotta have Rafa as the men's fav, especially considering how strong his form's been over the past month. Fed's looked very shaky, but this is a grand slam, where he's a different player.

I want Justine to win, but never count out the Williamses...

VAMOS!

I generally can't stand watching the French, but I always try to tune in, anyway.

Regardless, this marks the beginning of the three months that really matter.

Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet in the first round? Tough.

 Grrr.

Fed practicing...

Incidentally, those look like Vapor VI's in his current French Open colorway... it wouldn't be the first time its happened though.

And an exhibition match between 2 French DJ's...

Nice outfit... circa 1991

Though technically, the ATC III's are supposed to go with this outfit.

Robredo down two sets and a break in the third.

I'm not a fan of Monfils but I think he can make a move this tourney. A tought 3rd round with Cilic potentially.

Rooting for Roddick as always.

Edit:

What a crummy match-up for Murray, Gasquet just recently won a clay court title in Nice.

Yeah, Murray hasn't been too sharp on clay this season, while Fed's match was cake...
Anyway, I'm up to my usual antics.  Pics.

Djoker has such an unnatural service motion, IMO.

Gasquet is the king of losing 5 setters in which he held a lead. Don't see anyone beating rafa as he is in top form this season but then again he was a lock last year and soderling punished him. Let's go fed

Someone just needs to put Gasquet out of his misery.... It looks like the highpoint of his career will be the win over Roddick at Wimbledon. Ever since then he's been choking at every chance he gets.

What a waste of talent...

Gasquet seemed like he just ran out of gas in the 4th set. Damn, with his "I kissed a girl who used, which was why I tested positive" off time, you'd think he would have worked on his conditioning... or maybe he was really injured?

What do you guys think about making a permanent tennis thread similar to the boxing thread? We can have updates about upcoming tournaments, player injuries, the race to #1, etc. I think we have enough people interested in tennis to make it work.

^ Maybe that might work... but outside the 4 grand slams, is there enough interest from the usual suspects in here? Its like the past 4 masters-series clay court tournaments in Europe leading up to Roland Garros, I'm guessing there wasn't much interest? If you guys follow the masters tourneys as well, it might just work. I try to follow all the big (non-slam) tournaments, but thats just me.

Not with Nike anymore.

It's early in the match but Gianni Mina is the goods.... The French just keep rolling out talented youngsters.

Don't let the scoreline fool you... that Mina kid played well.  But the match-of-the-day for me goes to Kimiko Date's "upset" over Safina.  Date, bad calf and all, aged 39 has won a grand slam match in 3 different decades... crazy.  I enjoyed watching her play in the 90's, so I'm glad she won.
Here's another interesting bit... Safina was 3 when Date made her French Open debut in '89.

I CANNOT believe this Fognini dude has taken Monfils to a fifth set.

Early in the match, I thought he might be one of the worst players I've ever seen in a slam.

Edit: Oh, wow. They're about to call the match at 4 all in the fifth.

Edit: They're playing on. Monfils is all about continuing, but Fognini and his team are livid.

Madness.

Fognini holds after a nine minute game. 5-4.

They're pretty much playing in the dark at this point. ShotSpot isn't even accessible, it's so dark.

Monfils holds after about an eight minute game. 5-5.

They're officially suspending play now.

Crazy.

Apparently, Fognini went nuts walking off the court, yelling at everybody.

McEnroe, Schrieber and company all said this was the darkest they've ever seen a match played in.
