2006-07 Stats at a Glance
At this point last year, the New Orleans Hornets were one of the worst teams in the NBA. Now, they are healthy and playing like one of the best.
New Orleans can record its longest road winning streak in nearly five years when it meets the Golden State Warriors on Friday night.
The Hornets (21-11) have not finished with a winning record since 2002-03, but enter this matchup tied with Dallas for the third-best record in the Western Conference.
New Orleans has won six of seven overall after beating the Los Angeles Clippers 95-81 on Wednesday behind 29 points and 10 rebounds from David West.
"Our team is staying healthy," said Hornets point guard Chris Paul, who had 16 points and 13 assists. "We're confident, we're winning, we're sticking to our gameplan night in and night out."
It was the fourth straight win away from home for New Orleans, matching its longest road winning streak of the season. The Hornets have not won five consecutive road games since doing it from Feb. 22-March 11, 2003.
They are 12-5 on the road overall, already within three road victories of their total from all of last season.
New Orleans opened 2006-07 with a 12-20 record as it averaged a league-low 89.5 points. The team struggled with a slew of injuries, including ones to Paul, West and Peja Stojakovic.
Those three are healthy now and are the Hornets' top scorers, helping the team average 96.5 points. Paul leads the team with 21.3 points per game and his average of 10.3 assists ranks third in the league. West is averaging 19.3 points and 9.6 rebounds, and Stojakovic adds 14.2 points per game while ranking among the league leaders with 70 3-pointers.
"We feel like we can compete. We're just going to keep playing," West said.
That improved scoring has been combined with strong defensive play as the Hornets are among the stingiest teams in the league, allowing 92.5 points per game.
"We're doing some real good things on both ends of the floor," Hornets coach Byron Scott said.
They hope their improved play can help them snap a three-game losing streak against Golden State (19-14) in the first matchup between the teams this season. The Warriors have won five of the last six meetings at Oracle Arena.
Golden State hopes it can rebound from a 121-99 loss at Dallas on Wednesday. It was the first time the Warriors visited Dallas since beating the Mavericks in last year's playoffs to become the first No. 8 seed to win a best-of-seven first-round series.
"Nothing. One game. Long season. We're learning," Warriors swingman Stephen Jackson said. "We're a strong team, we take a loss and we're all men in here. We're building - our season is going pretty good right now."
The Warriors haven't dropped consecutive games since opening the season with a six-game losing streak - all coming with Jackson serving a six-game suspension.
Jackson had 25 points Wednesday, and is averaging 23.9 over the last nine games to help Golden State go 6-3.
Baron Davis, the Warriors' leader with 22.0 points and 8.0 assists per game, is looking to bounce back after making only 2-of-14 from the field and scoring 10 points against Dallas.
The All-Star point guard averaged 25.8 points and 7.5 assists in four games against the Hornets last season.
