Word on the Street: Workouts, Trade Rumors Heat Up

by: Jonathan Givony - President
June 5, 2008
Similar to last year, where the Houston Rockets organized a massive two-day, 36 player workout attended by 12 teams in Orlando, this year the Phoenix Suns' Dave Griffin and the LA Clippers' Neil Olshey are putting together a two-day, 24 player workout intended to showcase players in the 10-40 slots of the draft.

Ten teams are reportedly already on board, including the Warriors, Kings, Nuggets, Clippers, Trailblazers, Supersonics, Grizzlies, Bulls, Bobcats and Suns. The workout will be conducted in Golden State on the 13th and 14th. Some of the players we heard that will attend include Brandon Rush, Courtney Lee, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Bill Walker, Gary Forbes, J.R. Giddens, Trent Plaisted, and others.

We're hearing about multi-team workouts that are being organized later on that week by Houston and Portland as well.

-UCLA sophomore Russell Westbrook is expected to sign with Wasserman Media Group shortly. Westbrook would give WMG six likely lottery picks in this draft.

-O.J. Mayo is expected to officially sign with Leon Rose (agent of LeBron James, Allen Iverson, Rip Hamilton, etc) of CAA next week, according to reports we've received.

Mayo has reportedly yet to schedule even a single workout, and will probably do so after he officially hires his new agent. We've been told by several sources that Mayo may try to pull a Yi Jianlian and only work out for Chicago, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, while shunning the smaller market teams such as Minnesota, Seattle and Memphis. Things could certainly change as the draft develops over the next few weeks.

-The Indiana Pacers are trying to dangle the #11 pick in hopes of being able to package it with one of their ugly contracts (preferably Jermaine O'Neal). There is talk out of O'Neal's camp that he anticipates being trade to Cleveland at some point this summer, possibly in a deal involving expiring contracts such as Wally Szczerbiak and Eric Snow.

The Pacers don't want to give O'Neal away for nothing, but the temptation of shedding his 23 million dollar contract from their cap figure (giving them substantial cap space to work with in July of 2009) may be too great to pass up. On Cleveland's end, it makes sense for their ownership to spend the money it will take to try and appease LeBron James and show them they are making the efforts to put together a championship caliber team. We've heard rumblings about this Cleveland/Indiana trade from a number of well-informed sources, so there appears to be at least some truth to it.

-One team that is apparently looking to move up in this draft is Philadelphia, thanks to the plethora of cap space they will enjoy coming July 1st. The Sixers are reportedly realizing that there could be very few quality unrestricted free agents available that they could realistically sign, making their precious cap space essentially useless.

One trade that is making the rounds would involve the Knicks sending Zach Randolph and the rights to the #6 pick to Philadelphia for a smaller contract, such as Reggie Evans, and the rights to the #16 pick-after July 1st (when Philadelphia's cap space kicks in). New York would move into position to have significant cap space in the summer of 2010 (possibly to make a run at LeBron James) by unloading the 17.3 million dollars owed to Randolph in 2010/11, and would still be able to keep David Lee around.

Philadelphia would fill a big void at power forward with a 20 point per game scorer in Zach Randolph, and possibly pick up one of Jerryd Bayless, O.J. Mayo or Eric Gordon in the process, while only sacrificing the 8-9 million dollars they are expected to have in cap space, which likely wouldn't get them very far anyway.

-There are a number of teams looking to move down or out of this draft if the right trade offer comes along. One of them is Memphis, who is having serious problems scheduling some of the top players expected to compete for the fifth overall pick. Things are reportedly bad enough that as many as 6 of the top 7 players in this draft (everyone projected in that range of our current mock draft besides Kevin Love) have told the Grizzlies they do not want to play for them. Memphis might thus decide to save some money and slide down a few slots, while possibly unloading a contract (such as Brian Cardinal) in the process. The Sixers could come into play here too.

-Minnesota continues to field offers for the #3 pick in the draft as well, according to numerous sources. They would not mind selecting either Kevin Love or Brook Lopez, and could decide to drop down a few slots and try to pick up another asset in return. It's unlikely that Minnesota makes a trade before they are on the clock, though, as there is still a small possibility that Miami decides to pass on Michael Beasley at #2. Pat Riley and the Miami front office will reportedly be in Chicago this week to take a look at O.J. Mayo.

-Minnesota is reportedly looking at packaging their two early 2nd round picks (#31, #34) for a late first round pick, due to roster spot concerns. Chris Douglas-Roberts may be one of the players they are targeting.

-Portland (as they do every season) may consider doing the same with picks #33 and #36. One player they reportedly may make a run at this summer is Chicago's Ben Gordon, as they may feel like he is the perfect fit in their starting lineup next to Brandon Roy, where he can defend point guards but not have the burden of having to run a team.

-Talk continues to circulate that the Denver Nuggets have promised to select Ty Lawson with the 20th pick later this month. Lawson pulled out of the NBA pre-draft camp after just one day, citing a hip-pointer, but was seen shooting around and looking absolutely fine just a few hours before he was supposed to play. He stated that if he were to be projected to be drafted outside the top-20, he will return to North Carolina, making the Nuggets precisely his cut-off point.

Denver started Anthony Carter at the point guard position in 67 of 70 games he played this season. He did an admirable job, but clearly the team is in need of an upgrade at that spot, particularly if they want to continue to play the brand of up-tempo basketball that George Karl is so fond of, and which Lawson just happens to absolutely excel at.

-Rodrigue Beaubois and his agent Bill McCandless are conducting an open workout on Sunday the 8th in Atlanta that is expected to draw multiple NBA teams (Orlando, Atlanta, Memphis, New Jersey, LA Lakers, possibly others).

-J.R. Giddens has been forced to cancel workouts with Boston, Detroit and New Jersey this week after suffering a hamstring injury in the second game of the NBA pre-draft camp-of which he played only six minutes. Always the competitor, Giddens tried to play on the injury in the third and last game of the camp and struggled because of it, and was forced to pull out of the combine as well. Giddens will be participating at the multi-team workout in Golden State.

SMH @ dudes refusing to workout for Memphis...what a mess that franchise is but who are these dudes to refuse working out for an NBA Team that wants to givethem Millions of dollars

The Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jamont Gordon is ready for the NBA, even if he's not a first-round draft pick.

The Mississippi State guard said Wednesday that he'll likely stay in the draft even if he knows he'll slip into the second round and not receive a guaranteed contract.

"I'm pretty much in," Gordon said after a pre-draft workout with the Charlotte Bobcats. "If worst comes to worst and I have to go back, I'll go back."

Gordon declared for the draft in April but did not hire an agent, allowing him to withdraw from the draft by June 16 and return to school for his senior season. But Gordon seemed eager Wednesday to move on to the NBA, even if he has to try to fight for a roster spot as a second-round pick. First-round picks get guaranteed two-year contracts.

"I'll probably stay in. That would be all right with me," Gordon said. "I know I'll work hard and get me a (roster) spot."

Gordon said he has workouts scheduled with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday and the Los Angeles Clippers Tuesday.

Gordon drew criticism for skipping last week's pre-draft camp in Orlando, wasting a chance to showcase his skills in front of representatives from every NBA team.

"Just me and a couple of my people decided I shouldn't go," Gordon explained. "They say it wasn't a big deal. I don't think it was a big deal that I wasn't there, but it seemed like it was. I just made a decision that I wasn't going to go down there. I just wanted to get ready for my workouts and everything."

While the 6-foot-4 Gordon averaged 17.2 points per game last season and was an all-Southeastern Conference selection, there are questions about whether he has the passing skills to be a point guard in the NBA. He's smaller than most shooting guards.

But Gordon said he learned a lot from new Bobcats coach Larry Brown, who ran Wednesday's workout, and is looking forward to proving himself.

"I think I'll be all right," Gordon said. "I didn't go to the (pre-draft camp) or nothing, but my workouts are going good. I think I'll still make it in that draft somewhere."

If Gordon intended to stay in why didnt he workout in Orlando?

Get real tired of these moves to "appease" LeBron James. A one legged Jermaine O'Neal is not going to bring you a championship and is just goingto clog up what, if any, cap space you have. Cleveland's front office sucks.

loving the idea that JO ends up on the Cavs. Would hate to see the Knicks lose that #6 pick because there are potentially a lot of good-great players in thatrange. My hopes:

Knicks- Stay at 6 and Draft Bayless. Just anyone but freakin Brook Lopez
Lakers - Glad they dont have a first round pick. Thanks Pau. lol

Hopefully, I'll be in attendance. I'll denounce Knick fan hood if we select Joe Alexander.

If Roy goes to Seattle....

Lawson guaranteed at 20? He never struck me as a great playmaker or passer....he's just fast, really fast. Can't see him making people better.

Cleveland's front office sucks.
Yes, it does. Best open floor player in the game, and you wana play like the early 90's knicks...

I gotta say, as a purely neutral observer with respect to the Knicks, that sounds like a pretty good move. They have to start getting rid of some of thoseoverpaid, deadbeats they have on the roster. Randolph is good place to start if you ask me. I've never been a fan of his . . . way too one dimensional.

I keep trying to find reasons to back this guy, but they are getting fewer and fewer by the day...
Douglas-Roberts says no to working out for Grizzlies

Ex-Tiger expecting higher pick than 28th
By Ronald Tillery (Contact)
Memphis Commercial Appeal
Thursday, June 5, 2008

So much for home cooking.

University of Memphis swingman Chris Douglas-Roberts has rebuffed the Grizzlies' requests to visit FedExForum for an individual draft workout.

The Griz own the fifth and 28th picks in the first round of the June 26 NBA draft.

Douglas-Roberts is projected to go late in the first round. ESPN.com has the Detroit native going 27th to New Orleans while NBAdraft.net slots Douglas-Roberts at No.22 with Orlando.

"(Players) take a projection of a range they think they will fall in the draft, and they tend to concentrate on those teams," Griz general manager Chris Wallace said Thursday. "I've got no problem with drafting a guy who doesn't work out. It happens all the time.

Chris Dgls-Roberts

"His advisors feel that he's going to go higher than 28th. But things change too. We've got three weeks before the draft. They may reconsider closer to draft day, and come in to work out."

Douglas-Roberts has worked out at Tim Grover's gym in Chicago along with the likes of USC's O.J. Mayo. He did not participate in the NBA's pre-draft camp at Orlando last week.

When asked by DraftExpress.com about his status, Douglas-Roberts sounded confident.
"I've heard everything from around 13 to 24," he told the Web site. "I'm not really sure. I'm working out for teams all within that range. I'm even working out for the Nets, who are at 10 and 21, so I'm working out for everyone. These workouts will speak volumes. I really don't know where I'll wind up, but I know I'll end up somewhere.

CANTON Your 401(k) is taking a beating. The NASDAQ is down. But Kosta Koufos' stock is up with fewer than three weeks before the NBA Draft market closes.

Where will the former GlenOak High School and Ohio State star be drafted June 26? A better question is: Where is Koufos?

The 7-foot-1 1\/2 center is lighting up individual workouts and fighting jet lag during a whirlwind trip through NBA cities. His most recent stop in Seattle included work against UCLA's Kevin Love, and word is Koufos left the Emerald City having bested the Bruins star in one-on-one drills.

Koufos is scheduled to visit about a dozen teams before the draft.

He is back in Canton this weekend, but will fly out again next week.

"The travel hasn't been tiring at all," Koufos said. "I played very well in Toronto and Seattle, and had great workouts at both places. I feel very confident in my situation. I've been traveling my whole life, so my body adapts to it pretty well. God has blessed me with these great opportunities."

Even more opportunities seem to be coming.

Mock drafts rate him

"If you would've told me before the (college) season he would be anywhere between 18 and the 20s (in the first round), I wouldn't have believed you," said Chris Monter, a former Alliance resident who runs Monter Draft News. "He's a player who had a good, but not great, freshman season. But the expectations were high on him with the McDonald's All-America team and the great career he had at GlenOak."

Monter isn't sure how Koufos is faring during individual workouts. That is the holy grail to determine draft stock.

Monter and ESPN's Chad Ford have Koufos being taken 19th by the Cavaliers. However, Cleveland's roster and draft spot are in flux with General Manager Danny Ferry possibly looking to move up.

Other mock drafts have Koufos going between Nos. 10 and 14. He worked out for Toronto (17th pick) on Wednesday and Seattle (No. 4 and 24) on Thursday.

Koufos has scheduled workouts with Minnesota (No. 3), New York (No. 6), Charlotte (No. 9), New Jersey (No. 10), Indiana (No. 11), Sacramento (No. 12), Portland (No. 13), Golden State (No. 14) and Philadelphia (No. 16).

"We've gotten feedback from (Toronto), and they were surprised and impressed with how athletic and mobile he is," said Joe Abunassar, who trains NBA players at his Impact Basketball facilities in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. "When you look at his game film, it doesn't always show that. What NBA teams are seeing is more than they're expecting."

Impressed by Koufos' skills

Abunassar said teams are impressed with Koufos' height, mobility and skill with the ball.

"This is the best shape I've been in," said Koufos, whose body fat is about 6 percent. "I get up and down the floor very well."

Love worked with Abunassar, too. "Kosta is not going to lose ground to anyone athletically in this draft," Abunassar said.

Impact Basketball took extra weight Koufos was carrying in his upper body and leaned the 7-footer out. In Vegas, Koufos developed more upper body strength during six weeks of training.

"Teams are seeing a bouncing, physical, mobile guy that is rare at his size," Abunassar said.

Draftexpress.com ranks Koufos as the second-best center. Most rankings have him among the top five along with a combination of Stanford's Brook Lopez, Texas A&M's DeAndre Jordan and Nevada's JaVale McGee. Koufos also is in some power forward lists alongside UCLA's Love.

Lopez is doing limited individual workouts as he is expected to be a top-five pick and is the top-ranked big man. It appears Koufos is trying to pass Love, and he may be doing so.

An individual workout does not mean Koufos is flying solo in front of NBA execs. Up to six players are permitted to participate at once. There are 1-on-1, 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 drills as well as shooting and ball handling.

Koufos has strong ball-handling skills. There were times in high school when he brought the ball up the court.

Koufos dazzled high school coaches with one-handed dunks with both hands. Those were rarely seen at Ohio State.

"He led them to an NIT championship (as tournament MVP)," Monter said. "He's a skilled big man and excellent shooter. He went to the Nike All-American camp the last year they had it in Indianapolis, and he was the best player there. He still needs to get stronger and develop his inside game. I mean, he's going to work out well for teams."

The NBA Draft, more so than any other league, is a developmental draft. Teams take first-rounders on potential. Koufos compares favorably.

He is the second-youngest big man available, having recently turned 19.

At OSU, Koufos averaged 0.532 points per minute. Looking at the top teenagers in this draft, Koufos' per-minute scoring is the fifth best behind Michael Beasley, Eric Gordon, Love and Jerryd Bayless.

Koufos has an insurance policy if the NBA Draft tanks. He could play in Greece for upwards of $6 million.

"I work with 40 to 60 NBA veterans, and Kosta is right in the mix with all those guys," Abunassar said. "He has the potential to be a longtime NBA player and an effective one."

I'm willing to put any amount of money down that the Heat don't pick Beasley at #2...and if they do, they aren't keeping him for long...He wont beon the team by June 27th.

Did Koufos really outplay your brother like that article suggests?

Hopefully O.J. Mayo or E.Gordon fall to us. If not, then give us Love or any other big so that we can trade up or down with whichever team has O.J. or EG.

they wont have the option to choose him at #2.

If Miami deals that pick, they're just dumb...and if they take another player...

I don't know what other way to put it. And I would LOVE for NY to move up and take him

...When I saw Koufos in November in the Preseason NIT...I thought he was incredibly skilled and agile for his size...he struggled, but I'm not shockedhe's gained that kinda interest now.
